Well, they were thinking about handing out "How To Learn Japanese In 10 Minutes" pamphlets in the theaters back in 1988, but they decided to dub it in English instead. *sarcam off* The Pioneer dub is for n00bs, and the Streamline dub ROCKS!
@ozerataoglu AKIRA was first dubbed for theater release in 1989 by Streamline. It was then re-dubbed in 2001 by Pioneer. Fans of the movie's dub itself are split down the middle between the Pioneer and Streamline dub. I personally like both.
Tetsuo doesn't sound as striking as he does in the japanese version when he says 'Kaneda'. This dub is different. Cam Clark doesn't do Kaneda's voice.
Holy fuck, American dub VAs always utterly fail at pronouncing Japanese names correctly.
At least this is not as bad as the HxH dub. I got through five minutes of "Goan" and "Kahlua" before giving up and going back to the sub. That's my only beef with dubs, you know? They can change the music, change the jokes, change the cultural references, whatever, but if you pronounce Ritsuko as Reet-SOO-ko ONE GODDAMN TIME, I've had it. Fuck off. Where's my subs.
I saw the old dub first, and i'll admit, for the most part I like the new one better. A few of the voice actors fit better in the old dub, Nezu being the most prominent: He sounded like a backstabbing weasel in the old dub, in the new he sounds respectable and boring.
The new dub was actually a huge technical improvement as far the dialogue and sound goes. The only people who prefer the original are the ones who saw the original dub first. If the original was technically better then why would they have bothered making a new one in the first place? To each their own but the bitching from orig dub fans is annoying as fuck.
@SBV123 THANK YOU. One thing that bothers me about the old dub was the fact no one pronounced the names right. It's Kaneda, not Cannnnaydddaa, it's Akira, not a Kira! I like both of the dubs, but I prefer the newer one and I saw the older dub first (See? There are people who won't let nostalgia cloud their minds!).
I agree, when they remastered it they destroyed the english dialogue and changed all the voices, the original english voices were better, it's like watching a totally different film, thanks for destroying a classic movie company assholes.
@arcenstone Well, technically, they pronounce Kaneda's name more correctly in this one. In Japanese, it's actually said "KAH-neh-dah" and not "kuh-NAY-duh", but I admit that I like the old English dub better regardless.

I saw the old dub first, and i'll admit, for the most part I like the new one better. A few of the voice actors fit better in the old dub, Nezu being the most prominent: He sounded like a backstabbing weasel in the old dub, in the new he sounds respectable and boring.

The new dub was actually a huge technical improvement as far the dialogue and sound goes. The only people who prefer the original are the ones who saw the original dub first. If the original was technically better then why would they have bothered making a new one in the first place? To each their own but the bitching from orig dub fans is annoying as fuck.

@SBV123 THANK YOU. One thing that bothers me about the old dub was the fact no one pronounced the names right. It's Kaneda, not Cannnnaydddaa, it's Akira, not a Kira! I like both of the dubs, but I prefer the newer one and I saw the older dub first (See? There are people who won't let nostalgia cloud their minds!).

I agree, when they remastered it they destroyed the english dialogue and changed all the voices, the original english voices were better, it's like watching a totally different film, thanks for destroying a classic movie company assholes.

@arcenstone Well, technically, they pronounce Kaneda's name more correctly in this one. In Japanese, it's actually said "KAH-neh-dah" and not "kuh-NAY-duh", but I admit that I like the old English dub better regardless.
