Ok Newt, then tell me how limited Warren Buffet is as one of the richest people in the world who has pledged 95% of his wealth to charity and is an agnostic.
It's people like this that made me so angry as a young athiest. So many Christians are persecuting athiests, just look at the nativity scene segment on youtube. Granted that many athiests are just as hostile, but given the fact they they are viewed in this manner openly by socieity, who can blame them? Newt is the type of person who believes that his view of God is the only way to be moral in life. What utter trash.
@Stonefallow .You missed the point. Atheists are not committed to anything unless the law forces them to be. Leaders have to have commitment. Atheists have none. That is why there are very FEW atheist leaders which, in turn, explains why Atheists are in the MINORITY.
A man with a god is just as weak as a man with out one--both are just men. No one is capable of doing everything needed to sustain their livelihood. Everyone depends upon others to do something they cannot. We can either steal and coerce what we need from others, or we can cooperate and collaborate with them to our mutual benefit. However, only one of those leads to functional society.
Many say we need the coercion of a god to cooperate, but the benefit is mostly for herdsmen, not the sheep.
While i'm not passionate enough to be seriously insulted by Christianity, here we have perfect example of what the guy in previous video meant. Great example of degrading man.
WRONG! The second step in NA and AA is that you recognize that there is a "higher power" or a power greater than yourself, NOT "higher being". This is no way implies you must believe in a god. Aside from that his argument is bullshit for one simple reason. I know atheists that have gone through the program and got clean. Belief in God is not a prerequisite. All you have to do is have the desire to stop using.
Fuck this asshole... I am an atheist and I know how weak and limited I am. I also believe that I am part of something much bigger then my self. I really wish polititians had the balls to declare their atheism once they've left office. One can understant lying about being an atheist when facing an ignorant and brainwashed electorate but they should own up after they retire.
@leffehoegaarden guess i'm more of a non-theist than an atheist for pure atheism is as arrogant and ignorant as pure THEISM. clearly there are non-natural forces at work in life, beyond the realm of science. the difference is my forces dont rape virgins, send prophets, write books +rule over a heaven and hell and give mandates. each individual has to find the light from the surreal as well as the real. for some, may be atheism, for some theism, + for others more of a middle.
@reg12269 You're wrong about pure atheism being as arrogant as theism. There is no evidence for any non-natural forces being present in the universe. There may well be much that is unknown but that doesn't in any way lead to anything "non-natural". I don't have to find "light from the surreal as well as the real", this is the slippery slope to the abuse of reason. thats so stupid. i dont trust a christian running the country just based on the fact they dont think outside religion as much as an atheist and they will make choices based on there beliefs . plus thats not seperation of church and state
12 step programs don't work, their success rate is the exact same as people who try to quit on their own. I feel bad for Christians, all they can do is keep lying to themselves...
@LogantheLibertarian that wiely Newt... you cant get elected if you really say what you think about religion, but people are so dumb its a hotbutton, of course he had to have a well rehearsed statement on it.
@cycophile That's why democracy is infallible, professional liars always have our best interest at heart, and such a perfect system must be inspired by God right? ROFL !!!
@LogantheLibertarian Correct, it is a horrible example. Not only that, a higher being can be anything outside yourself you can draw strength from. It doesnt have to be God. It can be the love of your family, or your sponsors guidance. Total fail of an example, Newt.
@LogantheLibertarian 12 step programs are wildly successful, why else would over 99% of the US drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers require it as part of their treatment with very few or limited or outright unavailable secular choices? Nice try but not good enough... sorry.
@MrKrap101 Yes, and those stupid magnetic bracelets that are supposed to help the healing process are widely successful too, but success doesn't = it working. People will believe anything that they think will help them, especially when their desperate. It doesn't change the fact that 12 step's success rate is 5% and people who try to quit on their own's success rate is 5%. So the fact that many rehabilitation centers use them is a refection of the center not the program.
Well Newt, what terrifies me is a president who thinks his authority comes from a mythical God, not the Constitution or the people, and who has his finger on the button ready to push if he thinks Yahweh whispers in his ear and tells him the last days have arrived.
I suppose the idea of depending upon other people is not equivalent to depending upon unseen, immaterial gods. That's really sad and pathetic. really.
This to me is on the level of saying, "I would never vote for a woman, Mexican, Jew, African American, etc." Why do Christians get a hall pass to discriminate against certain people? Atheists vote for Christians in every single election. It disgusts me that a successful, influential politician is applauded for blatantly discriminating against 15% of his fellow Americans. I'll give him one thing...at least he's honest about being a fucking prick.
The person that terrifies me is Newt, the cheat-on-my-sick-wives-while-god-watched, Gingrich. Was your god cheering you on while he guided you or was his walkie-talkie out of reach? The real help you'll need is getting elected, what a fucking phoney!
I think Newt fails to understand how powerful, and intelligent the human race is, and all life for that matter, with, or without a god. We have made it to the moon, and chimps can fly rockets, so as powerful as your god may be his influence on the species of this planet seem extremely limited, and you should realize that life governs itself, rest your faith on your knowledge and you will do great things.
So someone is not strong enough by themselves and needs an imaginary friend? I usually vote third party, but if this moron were to get the nomination I would have to vote against him by voting for the other guy.
So of course it's better to elect someone who is incompetent to fulfill the duties of president without the belief in an unproven magical deity? I would rather give someone a shot who at least predominantly uses his or her own knowledge and experience to take on the responsibility of such a high office. I don't want to see the president praying to this being for answers when we are electing this person to make critical decisions based on careful thought and consideration given actual facts.
Couldnt a higher power just mean the power of addiction and one has to admit that they themselves are not strong enough to defeat that power on their own so they need the aid of other people not neccesarily a god. Thats how i would look at it if i was an alcoholic.
U.S. Constitution, Article VI: "...no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States." You'd like to think that anyone prepared to take an oath to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States" has actually read the damn thing.
So closed minded. Do they not realize that the founding fathers wanted God and State seperate. They saw how much control the churches had on politics in europe that they didn't want it in the US. People are so dumb.
@rbdesign11 As an aside, regarding separation of church and state, I find it interesting that deists will state that this phrase is not specifically in the constitution and disregard it, but then when discussing the assertion that this is a Christian Nation, they fall back on the federalist papers and specifically the Declaration of Independence to find evidence to confirm that claim. Cherry picking is always in season.
This statement is so very representative of how religion has been able to control our elected officials. If the religious votes did not count in an election, or should I say the so called religious lobbyists did not count, no one would have a problem about this. No other country in the west focuses on religion so much. As an atheist, the separation of church and state should mean more than tax exemption in this country.
An articulate cult leader response. So if god represents political figures, he takes money from big companies, creates wars, unjustly makes slaves of the poor, favors belief over good deeds, and lies during every speech? He said everything us secular people needed to hear. If you secretly don't believe, stop hiding and come out!
@righteousemusic It does scare and disgust me that so many millions in this country show their unwillingness or inablity to break out of the comatose "living'"death imposed on them by fascist, rightwing religious cults - in other words, fundamentist christianity. I get that going against the kind of cruelty-based brainwashing they received from the crib is causes excruciating emotional pain, but, I wish they'd find the guts to do it.
Oh Newt you kidder! I perfectly know my limitations, and I don't think i'd be cut out to be the president of the US. True. But someone think they are, and someone is cut out for it, and they are *gasp* atheists. I wish for once in America's political lifetime, an atheist will rise up to the challenge, and come as far as a republican national debate. Because then, on national TV, maybe people will see, there is nothing wrong, with us. We are not less than you, we are better.
i h8 newt gingrich. " how weak and limited any human being is" bitch just cuz u and the rest of ur followers r weak and limited and need the jesus nipple not every else does
christians, (so-called) terrify me everyday of my life, because they are in positions to make decisions based on delusional thinking that affect my life
Actually, there is a 50% fall back rate when you try to stop drinking by yourself, and there is a 50% fall back rate if you go to A.A. Statistics don't lie. So, what does that tell you?
What a profoundly ignorant thing to say. I'm sorry, but this is just downright ridiculous. When you're in office you are a servant of the people, not your religion. We're a democracy from the Greek "dēmos" or "people", not a theocracy.
The Constitution is your scripture, not the Bible.
Newt really lives his life as Jesus would. He is truly a shining example of morality. Wow, what a tool. Not that I would have ever voted for him. He friggin ditched two wives for younger women, one was suffering from cancer.
The logic is simply horrifying. He dismisses the entirety of humanity as weak and limited. In order to be successful, we must suspend our acceptance of natural physical law?
wow what an NEWTRON BOMB! he really made a fool with himself on this one, he's saying that Albert Einstein, Carl Sagan,Bill Gates, Sigmund Freud. Hes happier with someone as president who believes that someone was born of a virgin and rose from the dead---something THAT HAS NEVER HAPPENED IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND!
"How weak and limited any human being is." Seriously Newt?? Wow way to give credit to people who you are supposedly trying to sell your vote to. I mean the guy sounds like a dictator saying things like that.
The person in office that terrifies me is the one that thinks he hears voices telling him right and wrong. That he's been chosen. That it's ok to kill people in gods name, women, children, that it's ok to keep slaves and only beat them so hard, that genital mutilation is ok, or incest.
That it's ok to kill people for working on the sabbath.
Those are all things the bible sanctioned. To deny it is to lie about it.
OR
Would you rather trust someone that believes in the Truth and Science?
As an atheist, I don't sit here & pray and hope that "god" will answer what I want to happen or to help me. If i want to do something, I push myself to do it. & if i want something to happen, I try and find whatever I need to make it happen. You can't just sit there crying to an imaginary person in the sky, you have to do it and you have to believe in yourself. People really do need to spend more time believing in themselves and not thinking that their just puppets to this thing. Be confident!
What is worse: a person who knows all we have is each other to depend on or a person who thinks he can get strength from a non-existent higher power and thus it is OK to crap all over other people, or bomb them, or steal the value of their production, or just take their land, or kill them for some inspired greater good....I could never vote for someone with such a limited grasp on reality. He thinks he is so clever but is just another frightened child who still believes the boogie man is real.
Pretty pathetic that he degrades the abilities and perseverence of humanity just because Newt's too weak to keep it in his pants when in the presence of women other than his wife...not everyone's a sad excuse for a husband and Christian, though I myself don't profess to the religion.
Yeah, let's elect someone who was unfaithful TWICE as President instead, I'm sure we can trust him.
Newt is a career politician, and therefore, a lying, cheating, dishonorable bastard who should have his balls kicked every time he lies.....which is every time he talks.
@ironyouth78 The audience at this event (which I attended) was comprised mostly of right-wing evangelicals, which is why Newt received such heavy applause. With the possible exception of Ron Paul, all the GOP candidates were there to prove to the audience that they would be the most homophobic and theocratic president. I found Santorum and his comparison of gay marriage to slavery particularly disturbing and he too received heavy applause for his comments.
I hope that Gingrich doesn't think that "he and God" will run the USA. The reason that the US Government has all it's members and branches is because the President alone does not run the country. His strength should come from the rational decisions made buy a group of very carefully selected people. If the Gingrich strength and decision making capability comes from a conceptual entity, he should definitely seek psychiatric help. He should leave his "la la land" beliefs at home where they belong.
The first religion of Newt Gingrich was Lutheranism, the second was Southern Baptist and the third and present religion is Roman Catholicism. This doesn't say much for religion at all and is an indication of Gingrich's fickle and unstable nature. America must have a stable, rational, practical president, not a hypocritical, arrogant individual who shops religions and women like ice cream flavors. If Gingrich believes Jesus was born of a virgin and came back from the dead, he needs mental help.
So a religious person makes for a better ruler, because they think they can claim ownership of morals and understanding? Newt thinks he sounds intelligent, but the content is rather dumb.
sadly, the sheeple of my country dont want a guy who will try his best to get the job done. They would much prefer a guy whos gonna sit back, prop his feet up on his desk and say "jesus take the wheel". i will never understand this. Even in the days when i believed in god it was apparent to me that he didnt just come down from valhalla and fix shit for people.
@autopsy87 Thank you! The newt has the mental capacity of anybody who has allowed their thinking to be done by a kind of religion that terrorizes its followers into giving up independent thought. No wonder he wants some fantasy Daddy in the Sky to do important things for him. He has been robbed of the courage to think or act for himself and on the behalf of others. Ye gods, save us from this weak little man who would at best lead us into a new age of darkness.
I would rather have a strong president who does not suffer from delusion than one who is weak enough that he feels he has to rely for guidance on an imaginery entity and all the crap that entails. A man who is whole has to examine his reasons for his actions while sheep like you don;t have to think much, you just do what you THINK Jesus/God wants, even though you really don't have much to base your understanding on in that area. BAAA!! You dumb sheep!
Jesus Christ, this guy is a dumb ass. Sorry Newt, we non-religious people believe in each other and solving our own problems, not praying to some magical cosmic sugar daddy who gives you whatever you want just because you beg hard enough.
That's what made Ronald Reagan such a great president. He not only relied on god, he made doubly sure, he brought in an astrologer too. He covered all the bases. If I'm elected President I would also consult and channel Elvis and bigfoot. No man is an island unto himself until the fat lady sings so its good to bring in a singing fat lady too.
Yeah...perfect line of reasoning. "let's NOT elect the guy who thinks he is strong enough to be president on his own". Lets all just put our trust in the guys who pray our problems away to magic man in the sky. This nation is getting somewhere. -_-
@chuckwagon1645 im confused, i thought there was a seperation of church and state in the US, why do they care if someone was an atheist or not? so weird
@hahaha44602 Separation of church and state flies out the window in practice. Sure it's in writing. But we still have religious zealots for political leaders who all patiently await a day when bible prophecy will be fulfilled and there will be enough blood shed to rise to a horse's bridle. Revelation 14:20. It's fucking psychotic. These people ACTUALLY WANT the world to end just how their story book says it will.
So, let me get this right Newt...You think a man elected president who has the confidence to know he can do things on his own is 1st - a bad thing, and 2nd - needs an invisible man to guide him is a good thing!! And Christians wonder why they're called deluded.
That is one of the most stupid answers I have ever heard. He's like Rick Perry, he doesn't have answers so he thinks by praying for rain it will rain.
If I were an atheist candidate, I would tell him to speak for himself. Who is he to say that another person, qualified to be President, isn't strong enough on his own to be the Pres? How bout this, Newt (and other theists): you are projecting onto other people fears you have about yourself. Shouldn't a person running for Pres have more confidence? Humility has its place, but so does confidence.
It's not a bad point he makes. The trouble is, he doesn't embody that kind of surrender, humility, transparency and rigorous honesty that AA and 12-steps tries to evoke in one that practices them. So I don't think he is really entitled to say that. It's a good point, but good points that are not embodied don't really touch the ground.
@rrippp as a so-called 'recovering alcoholic' myself, who knows that programme inside out, and lives the values quite well (at least in my opinion ;)
however - a secular/atheist person who does not believe in a higher power, but does good for it's own sake, and taps into their innermost core resources without claiming religious beliefs around them, is to my mind very spiritual. And in a way that's often above and beyond people who claim to be religious or spiritual.
@ralph489 Sue me then... It's just my fucking opinion, based in my own experience and observation, and I was pretty careful and thoughtful of what I said, not trying to put it on others.
'Unfortunately' for you and your butthurt. What a stupid, arrogant, insincere rhetorical device to use - 'unfortunately'... Guess you were saying 'My reasonable principle was offended' (translates as 'I puff myself up with arrogant certainty, and will call it something more noble to sound smart/virtuous')'
@rrippp I am ALL for separation of church and state btw... And for reason, and for keeping the more fundamentalist levels of development as far from power as possible. There is a grain of truth in what he was saying (they are humble words). If you read what I said, I said he doesn't LIVE it.
@rrippp The problem with what Newt says is that he believes that people can't do things without attributing it to a higher power. The problem with that is that he's advocating people talking to their imaginary friend and using that to justify policy. And that's true even if one group happened to be right about a god. If the Muslims are right, the Christians are talking to themselves, and vice versa. What a terrible basis for a government.
Damn, separation of church and state doesn't apply to Newt and Rick Perry, we need to get Ron Paul in only candidate that doesn't push religion onto folks..
I was going to comment on how ineffective 12 step programs are but everyone beat me to it. What I will comment on however is the TOTAL lack of reaserch this guys did for that story. I wonder if he is really that stupid or does he think that we ( the american people) are?

ddemaree 1 week ago
@LogantheLibertarian 12 step programs are wildly successful, why else would over 99% of the US drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers require it as part of their treatment with very few or limited or outright unavailable secular choices? Nice try but not good enough... sorry.
MrKrap101 1 day ago
@MrKrap101 Yes, and those stupid magnetic bracelets that are supposed to help the healing process are widely successful too, but success doesn't = it working. People will believe anything that they think will help them, especially when their desperate. It doesn't change the fact that 12 step's success rate is 5% and people who try to quit on their own's success rate is 5%. So the fact that many rehabilitation centers use them is a refection of the center not the program.

So of course it's better to elect someone who is incompetent to fulfill the duties of president without the belief in an unproven magical deity? I would rather give someone a shot who at least predominantly uses his or her own knowledge and experience to take on the responsibility of such a high office. I don't want to see the president praying to this being for answers when we are electing this person to make critical decisions based on careful thought and consideration given actual facts.

rbdesign11 2 weeks ago

If Gingrich believes Jesus was born of a virgin and came back from the dead, he needs mental help.

nickstoli 2 months ago
It's not a bad point he makes. The trouble is, he doesn't embody that kind of surrender, humility, transparency and rigorous honesty that AA and 12-steps tries to evoke in one that practices them. So I don't think he is really entitled to say that. It's a good point, but good points that are not embodied don't really touch the ground.
rrippp 2 months ago
@rrippp as a so-called 'recovering alcoholic' myself, who knows that programme inside out, and lives the values quite well (at least in my opinion ;)
however - a secular/atheist person who does not believe in a higher power, but does good for it's own sake, and taps into their innermost core resources without claiming religious beliefs around them, is to my mind very spiritual. And in a way that's often above and beyond people who claim to be religious or spiritual.

@rrippp I am ALL for separation of church and state btw... And for reason, and for keeping the more fundamentalist levels of development as far from power as possible. There is a grain of truth in what he was saying (they are humble words). If you read what I said, I said he doesn't LIVE it.
rrippp 2 weeks ago
@rrippp The problem with what Newt says is that he believes that people can't do things without attributing it to a higher power. The problem with that is that he's advocating people talking to their imaginary friend and using that to justify policy. And that's true even if one group happened to be right about a god. If the Muslims are right, the Christians are talking to themselves, and vice versa. What a terrible basis for a government.
