I have a A590 IS... It's basically this camera, with all the content and manual controkls, but not that powerfull (for example, it is 8 megapixels, but this camera has 10 megapixels).
I use this camera very little, most for events. I had taken photos inside an school auditorium and the photo are to dark, I try flash on or off. My sister has a graduation this month & I want to take clear photos. The auditorium has dim light,
What setting should I use indoor to get that clear photos? Should I use flash?
Which brand of battery are best for this camera? Cause I purchase the accessory power 2700mah NiMH rechargeable battery, after recharging it does not last long.
hi , I got this camera and i have some problems with the focusing..... everytime I zoom in the focusing seems to have probles doing it the I half press the triger and id doesn`t auto fix it ......here in mexico is hard to find someone to fix it , do you know what can i do about it , thanks for taking your time reading me
I just found your videos late last week and I LOVE them (and the website)! Thank you for all of the camera info!
I have a question about this camera specifically... do you think a one-arm man would be able to handle/use this camera as easily as the smaller Canon's?
My second questions is in regards to the screen... is anyone making cameras this small or smaller withtilt and swivel screens? I know the SX20IS does, but that's way too big to use easily. Thanks again!
(my mom replaced it with a cheap olympus and the a640 takes way better shots)The a640 is now officially mine since I used it more than she does
I use it like an old school SLR and leave it on manual were you have to choose the correct shutter speed and aperture control since the auto modes just suck ass
i've been iterested in this model for a while and i did some reading up on it but no one can tell me if it has color swap and/or color accent. i have an A610 and i want an upgrade but im hooked on my color swap
Yes it does! Check out the screen and menus page in the Features section of my A640 review at cameralabs . com - there's a link to the right of the video window above.
Can you please send me a link of a good digatal camera that is under 200 dollars amercian money) i am looking for a good quality one so i can make video and upload them to utube,
Am I able to purchase this camera in New Zealand? I am also in need of a camera that can take pictures underwater I have some fantastic friends that are able to bear the sub zero temps of the lakes around here. I only with they would share the bloody wetsuits!
Yes you can - Canon NZ is still listing it, but as limited availability - it is over a year old now. You'll be pleased to hear there is an underwater housing for it...
@miyhalle Hey i'm from New Zealand and i'm interested in buying this camera (2 years later ha) but i was wondering, did you buy the camera? where from? and what was the price like? thank you :)

Don't use a normal cloth! Go to a photography store and ask them to recommend a wipe or a special cloth for cleaning the lens. And wipe it gently! Feel free to ask on the Cameralabs forums too...
yesh i bought this camera and im very glad its everything like you said, expect better, thanks for helping get my hands on a good camera. im looking forward in looking at more of your video's.
The A640 supports the optional WC-DC58N wide angle and TC-DC58N tele-converter lens attachments which multiply the focal length by 0.7x and 1.75x respectively. For more info, look at the Features page of the A640 review at Cameralabs . com.
If you record a video using this - or any other camera - you'll be able to watch it on your computer. You may need to install some new software to decode it, but it's no problem.
Thanks NimDod! Don't forget the videos you see here are only a small part of a full review which includes sample images and many more comparisons - there's a link to our full reviews to the right of the video window...
Awesome review.. I own the camera and it's absolutely incredible. The picture quality/resolution is SUPERB. The ease of use of the camera is insanely simple and is a very good camera choice for beginner and experienced photographers alike. For those wondering, there IS an Automatic mode if you would just like to snap auto shots, but also a wide variety of more advanced options for those interested in dabbling in more advanced photography.
This is a great review!!!!!! David Laing you have are really good in reviewing and demonstrating cameras. You convinced me to get the Canon Powershot A640! Thanks a lot!!!:)
Hey, this was a really great review, thanks! You're voice is very pleasant to listen to (maybe it's the accent, lol) and this was just the quick, informative review I needed. Well, I just bought the a640 and am waiting in the mail.. so excited!! :D
Hi Shahid, do you mean the guy in the video above? That's me, Gordon Laing! I really enjoyed doing the LBC radio show by the way and am still in touch with Nik, the other presenter. It's great to be able to demonstrate features on YouTube though. Hope you're enjoying the other video tours, and if you're after more details, check out the Cameralabs website. If there is a David Laing doing the same stuff though, sorry for the mix-up!
We're going to do a video for every new camera that we review at the cameralabs website - so we already have a few new ones coming up soon! If you want more information, each video also has a detailed review with sample photos on the Cameralabs website.
This A640 is an excellent camera and for the price there is nothing better, in fact it is better than a lot other high price cameras, if you can get one go and get it, you won't be dissapointed.
So the ixus advantage is only a matter of size and portability 'cause you can get it in your pocket, but watch for the screen to scratch with your keys, that is something doesn't happen with those powershot because of the swivel screen. And by the way... what can you do when the ixus battery is dead away from a charger? Well I know what can I do with one of these powershots, only enter to an store a get my four AA alkalines and finish my work. Can you do that? I don't think so.
avgrock: the ixus cameras are way back from this powershots (A630-A640), even the A95-A620 are better cameras. The ixus doesn't have all the manual options those powershot have and that is what makes you a really creative photographer. But, if you just want easy point-and-shoot those powershots can do it better too.
I have an A620. It's great for still pictures, and the video seems good at first, but the audio is terrible. There is always an loud electronic hiss, even when the area is completely silent. If it weren't for that and the lack of exposure compensation on the video feature, I would say it's the perfect compact camera.
Can it shoot in HD?

For this camera, how to you turn the volume up on the audio when recording?

I've been using this camera for about two years now, and only recently I've noticed a ringing noise in the audio of my recordings.
Do you know if there is a way of canceling out this ringing?
