Bell and Carlson with the aluminum bedding block and then glass bedded, it works extremely well for the money. This stock will shoot 1/4th inch groups after bedding 1" groups without.
I have a Remington 700 VLS 243 bull barrel with the laminate wood, it is a beautiful rifle and extremely accurate. I am shooting reloads with a 75 gr Hornady V max bullet. I zero that rifle at 200 yards. I am getting 1 inch groups or less at 200. It is an amazing rifle. I have a RRA AR 15 heavy varmint 18 inch bull barrel. It will do the same thing. I have fun trying to shoot golf balls at 200 yards.
@cheevous Yeah, those are both great guns. Very fun to shoot and very accurate. That Remington isn't bad for a $500 gun! It makes one wonder if paying a couple thousand for a custom rifle is worth it? Maybe, if you shoot competitions.
@ghillisniper300 It makes me wonder too. You can get a krieger or some other high quality custom but at 100 yards I am shooting less than half MOA. My 243 and 223 are both shooting in the .300 to .400 range. More than accurate enough for me. When you are hitting golf balls at 200 yards that is pretty damn good. I will save the money and buy more rem 700's and AR 15 bull barrels. I am looking at a heavy barrel AR 10 right now.
@cheevous I have a friend with a couple of Surgeons and those are really freaking cool. I have to admit. Trying to shoot a small target at 640 yards is a totally different thing with his guns and my heavy barrel .300 Win Mag. But I'm in the same camp with you, I personally don't need a laser beam if it costs me that much money. You can trick a Rem 700 out for a lot less. And a heavy barrel AR sounds like fun, and a lot of heavy lead going down range.
Looks like someone forgot to degrease the rifle and scope before poof canning the green paint. .243 is a great round. iv killed whitetails out to 600yrds with mine. and groundhogs out to 780yrds. i use handloads- the only thing i use! sierra bullets are accurate and a good deer pill.
The farthest ive shot a deer is 450yds, and a coyote near 650ish no range finder just based on doop on the rifle, I've also taken some armadillo's at a couple hundred. With that rifle no wind and a known range and I would be very confident in shooting deer out to 500 with handloads. I've shot the 6mm with berger 105vlds to 1066yds and produced consistent 8" groups but with alittle wind those groups easily turn into 15" groups.
@CoD0general hehe....I think that's mostly because Doc was firing it from on top of an old, empty oil tank. It had quite a bit of reverb. But yeah, it sounds cool.
@CoD0general It depends on the bullet. Doc will know better but typical soft points could ethically harvest deer out to 300 or 400 yards if you get good shot placement (which is key). I believe Doc has taken a whitetail at 400+ before, and he has loaded up some 105 grain A-Max bullets from Hornady that could legitimately take a deer right at 500 yards (based on energy and bullet performance). For most people I would say no more than 300 with store bought ammo.
@xXGMonsterXx9 It's Doc6mm's rig and I don't remember right off what he's topped it with. I'll try to ask him. I have a feeling it's not what you'd guess it is!
I have a Millett TRS-1 4-16X50 on my .300 Win Mag that I love so far. I need to review it, becuase it was about $300 which is pretty darn cheap as far as scopes go and it seems to be a great quality scope.
They seem to cycle well however I usually load them directly into the chamber just because I shoot alot of bergers and the tips can get dinked up when feeding from the mag they are over COL. In 45 I usually load bullseye or unique, I like the bullseye because it seems to burn clean and I can also use in 9mm loads. But with most 45 loads I think because of velocity and possibly bullet design results in unreliable expansion through clothing. "The 9mm expands but the 45 doesn't shrink"
I'm not sure how heavy my 700 is, but its great to shoot, and makes a good gun for varmints, all the way up to deer. I would probably take your 300 over my 243 for big game like moose or elk. Or dangerous game like bear or boar... but for the latter I would rather have my Saiga with slugs in it over either. :-)
@BlackwolfW87 I'll agree to that. Mines a bit hard to swing, so if space was tight I'd take an AR even over my .300. If I had distance...maybe. But a one ounce slug would be my drug of choice!
Sounds good, How's the 300 treat you? I've heard mixed things on it. Mostly on the recoil of the round being a bit much.
And thanks for the Sub, I haven't got anything up there yet, but hopefully soon I will start getting something up there. Probably just out shooting the .243 and my Saiga 12. And or stuff backpacking. Or interpreting. Depends. :-) don't have a video cam, so my phone is really my only recording device. Does take pretty good videos though...
@BlackwolfW87 It's probably better than my dedicated mini-DV. All the good stuff is shot on Doc's camera.
I like my .300, but it isn't very versatile. With all the hardware it probably comes in at about 15 pounds. And it has a muzzle break, so recoil is no problem. It's a dream to shoot. I do love it, just not the most practical gun.
Yeah I have a couple boxes of Federal 100 grain soft points that are my normal target shooting ammo.
My dad has been reloading shotguns since way back in the day when he was in college. I think that was the 70s. Pretty close to the stone ages. :-)
I'm approaching 21, and have my sights set on a Springfield 1911, and I would love to get reloading target ammo for .45 and .243 as well as match type for the .243.
@BlackwolfW87 Sweet. Yeah, Doc should be along at some point and can give you some tips on reloading I think. I've only reloaded for my .300, and that was just to find a "do it all" load that would be simple. I would also like to load for my .45 but haven't yet. From what Doc was telling me, it appears a 200 grain bullet is about optimal for a .45. We may have to do some testing.
I have a 700 in .243. Unfortunately, trying to get into handloading isn't cheap. Especially for a young guy just outta college... I save all my brass, but just don't have the capital yet to get the equipment to handload.
That said, I love my gun, almost stock as it is. My longest shots are 250... with the majority at 100 just target shooting. I love the remington core-lokt rounds for their expansion capabilities. Thanks for the good video!
@BlackwolfW87 I hear you. Doc's been reloading much longer than I have, but I finally got into it a little.
I like the core-lokt too, they seem to do well. Have you found any Federal? I've been finding it for my .300 Win Mag and it is $10 cheaper per box than the Remington, and seems to do well. They load Speer Hot-Cor bullets in them too, which don't have the best BC but seem to shoot fine.
I've taken deer in the 400-500 yard rage and coyotes at 500 to near 700. A friend of mine who runs 115 dtac's says "you don't have to have a lot of muzzle energy when you take a head shot" and I would have to agree.
@Doc6mm...which is precisely why I shoot a .300 Win Mag, because you don't have to take head shots when you can rip their spine in half with ANY body shot!
I agree the 243 has some advantages over other match type rifles in 308. Obviously not 30 cal impact force but still very effective with good shot placement. Unlike popular gun counter belief with the right load the 243 will do a great job bucking the wind and I notice dialing less windage dope compared to 308 rigs buddies of mine run.
Good shooting man. I love those Bergers too....but you are right...PRICEY! People that talk down the 243 need to do some research on a ballistics program. If you don't handload, the 243 probably isnt for you.....as there are very few factory match loads available. Fortunately, like you, I handload.
@TROOPERfarcry It actually is, I've seen Doc put 5 shots in less than 8 inches at that range. Things get tougher when it's 106 degrees and the wind is blowing and you don't have a spotter. I'm not attempting to start an argument here, but perhaps it would be best if you uploaded a video of some 850 yard shots.
@ghillisniper300 No mate, I am a lousy, lousy shot. ALL guns shoot better than me - that's why saying it "outshoots me" isn't saying much. 850 yard is approximately 750 yards further than I've shot - and the strongest I've shot is a .17 HMR and a 9mm (best kept at 50 yards). I want a higher-powered, and I'm "shopping" youtube and trying to decide between the .243 and a 7mm-08.
What I said earlier -- just a weak attempt at a joke. Of cousre that is some good shooting.
@TROOPERfarcry Then I must offer you my sincere apologies! I completely misunderstood and I'm so used to people flaming videos with rude comments that I took it wrong!
Hmm? .243 VS 7mm-08? That's a tough choice. I've never fired the 7mm-08 but I like it ballistically. Very accurate, but then so is the .243. The 7mm will do a bit better in wind and at long range, and obviously carry more energy further, but that's always a trade off. Good luck!!!
what optics are you using? is that a mark 4? also, if it is the mark 4, do you prefer the M1 or M3 knobs (other than for target shooting, the 1/10 MOA knobs seem a bit unnecessary even for varmint shooting)
thanks for the vid!
one last question, how well does your 105g Amax buck the wind farther out at 300-550yds?
@jbagglesworth I'll have to speak with Doc to answer those questions. I know it is not a Mark 4 scope, I think it is actually a fairly inexpensive scope that he's had a lot of luck with, surprisingly. It has 1/4 MOA knobs I know (an I agree on your comment on the 1/10). I'll check on the optincs and the ballistics. I know the 105's are pretty sweet on paper but I don't have any hard data for them. Thanks!
@MiKhmerlife It's a Bell and Carlson. I believe it is a Medalist Vamint/Tactical stock. I'm not certain. It has a bedding block and has been glass bedded but is not pillar bedded. Doc said his groups with it before were over 1 MOA and went sub-MOA after bedding easily. His latest 5 shot 100 yard group was less than .3 inches.
Nice rig, and any day you learn something useful about your equipment, your capabilities with it, and can use that experience to become more effective, it's not time wasted!
I should be so good.
Thanks for sharing Doc... I've got a LOT to learn, and people like you are a great help.
