  • @weusetohaveasongforu

So much for freedom of speech eh mate?

Record labels shouldn't be allowed to do that.

All they do is take your money and own your rights for freedom of speech.

    That sucks!

  • @boogs2007 I belive the government who censored the songs, not the recorder.

  • @weusetohaveasongforu They had political views alright but i doubt this song was just allowed, their whole vibe was left wing and so name me a song of any significance that was banned because it rocked the political boat.

  • @weusetohaveasongforu

Dunno what part of the country your from but 80s to mid-90s was nothing but UB40 (radio and TV) here,,, Its kinda hand not to play a song when theyre selling in the millions and making it in to the top 40 all the time,

Maybe not interviews and stuff but the songs were deffinatly geting aired, ,,,Then again UB40 are massive in Scotland maybe its a supply and demand ...you shouldve demanded to hear it lol

  • @weusetohaveasongforu ub40 was a political statement ffs ...............the name cant be escaped .........duno where ur from , but if ur uk then shoot urself for being ignorent !

  • @ivehadit1

    yes.

UB40 was what u got signed on to the dole (I'm too young to have had one).

Anyone one who doesnt think theyre a political band should really listen to the lyrics...

  • This freedom song from UB40 is so nice, wonderful and inviting... reggae time!

  • i love UB40

  • great tunes ! and a message ..no issues here .. oh yes and Brummies !

  • Best British reggae band since Bob Marley !

  • @MrNodzilla Bob Marley was neither British nor a band. he was Jamaican and the Band was Bob Marley and the Wailers.

But UB40 is and will always be one of the best reggae bands of all time. period.

  • @MrNodzilla . Didn't say Bob was British , but it was Britain who made him famous and also was where he was based . If it wasn't for Britain he may never have been anywhere near as successful , well not in his life time anyway ! What about Hendrix ? American virtuoso guitarist who was shunned by his home land yet made it in Britain due to one of the most explosive periods in music .

  • @MrNodzilla Stupid comment Bob made it himself he was destined to be a shining star in was a contract with God not britain get over yourself trying to claim everything your day has gone thank God!!

  • @StateofMotion81 . Really ? I thought Island records signed him . Didn't Jamaicans try to assassinate him whilst America had their own black superstars and weren't interested in reggae , well put it this way Black Americans aren't interested in blacks from other countries fullstop ! My day has gone ? Get over myself ? Contract with god ? Are you trying to be Bob Marley or something ? P.S. as for making it himself , he was produced to be palatable to European tastes .

  • @MrNodzilla just interested to know your nationality?

  • @Antigua498 . I'm not English ! Swing low your own fucking chariot you fucking Rastawannabe PRICK !

  • @MrNodzilla Tell that to his bank account :-P

  • @StateofMotion81 Stop hating us. If not for us, where would you be. I'm talking literally. history books (unbiased ones anyway) prove that point

  • Must of taken them ages to learn those dance moves. :)

  • First heard this on the Крыса На Кухне album in 1987 - stunning.

  • giving me lot of sweet memories which i shared with my x wife..chubbie.....

  • remember listening to this vloud on the coach on our way to see em

  • jaki graham and ruby turner on backing vocals not sure who the other singer was , but what a line up

  • Islandbouy - are you even old enough to remember this coming out?!? This was out at a time when everyone was fighting for a free South Africa and for Mandella's freedom. Sing our own song !!!!!!

  • wat een geweldige tijd

  • This song was written as a tribute to Nelson mandela and the new democratic South Africa... love UB40

  • @Jaybee0782 It most certainly was not! This song was written during the state of emergency in south africa when my old government was still up to no good (a la the US in Iraq and Afganistan today) in the townships. It was written as a comment on the ills of imperialism and they then threw in a bit of Zulu and I suppose that made it an attack on apartheid. It was not written as a tribute to the new South aFrica, but perhaps the hope in 1986 that South Africa could achieve what it did in 94.

  • we will fight for the right to be free

we will build our own society

we wil sing our own song

    .

Cool if you're black, racism if you're white.

    The world we live in.

  • Put it in context

  • nice of the rest of the ub40 group to shit on ally...all they want is money,he wanted to give something back to the fans like discounted concerts...but the rest of them were just after the money....music has died!!!!

  • what a fab comment by chyvonneza, totally agree, jus watching some UB40 on here for the first time in years, wow. some very moving UB40 songs on here, sing our own song, dont break my heart, I would do for you etc immense

  • We'll fight for our rights to be free, we'll build our own society and sing our own song. great song

  • Theyre a great band sadly a bit of infightin has lost them a lead singer.

Done a load of covers of originals though under the dubious statement of helpin the roots singers with royalties - dont know if thats true - however a lot of the covered tracks are done better by the original artistes, Melodians, Winston Groovy, John Holt etc - so look em up and listen to the originals off of vinyl - its all great

  • Dedicated to Exsanthy Potgieter x

  • For many years this has been an anthem of mine. Together with several Peter Gabriel songs, it has carried me through many difficult moments. From a mixed-race Sheldon (Birmingham) boy to UB40 who is now Canadian - thank you UB40! You made the journey/transition possible.

  • wow i guess this singer is good, i would have never thought it was a white guy singing.

  • dnt u jst love dis guys!!! i grew up listenin 2 UB40....basically reggae..d messages in dis song is great!! Jst d antidote 4 a bad day!! UB40 u guys rock

  • we all need freedom-- great song

  • This band became complete shite over time but they were great back in the day!

  • this song got me through a tough time, i've listened to it probably 1000 times and i love it still

  • I just needed a boost, thanks UB 40... :)

  • Toute ma jeunesse...Un sacre symbole à l'epoque...!

  • has anyone noticed that the UB 40 songs have mostly good and happy comments. so many other songs have ppl hating and negative comments. UB40 seems to bring ppl together, brilliant music and happy memories :)

  • Your so right..i think maybe its cause the're music is different?..yes its raggae but has a more calm and rocky aproach and it seems to have messages in them that really gets through to people..UB40 are legends

  • @chyvonneza - well said.

  • @chyvonneza The Song, 'Sing Our Own Song' while beautifully written, is not a song of happiness. Rather, it depicts the struggle of a culture and its peoples' oppression. The term, Amandla Awethu most aptly describes the people in South Africa fighting apartheid. This term became the verse to many songs of revolution. Translated loosely, Amandla Awethu, means 'Power is Ours'.

This is a song that speaks of rising-up against those that oppress us.

    Amandla Awethu

  • @PirateSygnal I know...I'm South African :)

  • @chyvonneza Great comment and a true observation in many ways.

  • @chyvonneza Thank you! After 20 years, I'm rediscovering UB40. They speak for the poor, and downtrodden. I think this was a song about South Africa during Apartheid. Not sure. Gotta Google it.

I'm all for positivity, even in the worst situations, like they sing about. It gives hope.

  • @chyvonneza you could also say that about bob marleys music but when you listern to damien marley there arn't any little birds on his door step, it makes me think if this groups children made music how different would theres be ?would they be singing this sweet reggae or just ranting about violence ?

  • @redhotsuperskunk Agreed ! Earlier more people stood up for beliefs, injustices and inequalities even if it meant going against the grain. The groups today want to blend in with the rest to get ahead and be popular. I find very few artists today are talented or skilled to make a difference in my life like older artists did....today I just sing along purely for brief entertainment. They just dont mean anything and hearing them sing live just makes me feel embarassed for them.

  • @redhotsuperskunk I stand corrected... I really do enjoy Adele.

  • thinking of haiti today

  • @jackhillty

    Thinking of Gaddafi haha

  • weechunt,I THOUGHT u woz pissed an just having a bubble,nice one,lol!!!

  • how many people are now confused if I'm being racist towards whites or blacks?

The answer is none of the above (or below)

I'm just drunk, love UB40 and wanted stuff to type while I listened... See, not everything can be interpreted in black and white :)

  • Just imagine how bad this world would be if the Jackson twins never made movies.. Samuel L. Jackson and Denzel Washington Jackson. Between them they have made some cracking movies.. but to be honest... all their movies look the same ;)

  • and the black ones are glad they are not the white ones..

it's very difficult to look cool if you are a cracker :)

  • shite... the white ones want to be black..... and the black ones are even wearing clothes.... What's next??? The black ones will probably get the vote eventually ;)

I'm expecting the PC backlash from white folks that can't interact with other humans :)

I always find that white folks are more offended by racism towards blacks than blacks are... they don't give a fuck :)

  • This is by far one of my fave's...:)

  • wow!

  • what is the crowd saying at the and ??
