If nebraska had won this game they more than likely would have won the National Title as #2 Georgia lost the Sugar Bowl that night to #10 Pitt while #3 Alabama had lost to #6 Texas that afternoon in the Cotton Bowl
The following night, Don Criqui and John Brodie would head right back to the Orange Bowl to call the Chargers/Dolphins AFC divisional playoff, a game now immortalized as the "Epic in Miami".
Hilarious. NBC used the Monty Python "Olympic Hide and Seek Final" song to intro its national championship coverage. Hearing Don Criqui over what John Cleese might have talked over is so funny, but cool. I miss Criqui and Trumpy. Heck, I miss how NBC did college football bowl games. Best ever. Bring 'em back for the BCS.
Craig was Nebraska. Osborne said it was his best team ever. Also RB Mike Rozier, WR Irving Fryar, QB Turner Gill. Nebraska Center Dave Rimington (Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award winner) was pushed around by NT William (The Refrigerator) Perry all night. Besides Perry, Clemson had LB Jeff Davis, FS Terry Kinard, WR Perry Tuttle, PK Donald Igwebuike and alot of really good players.
I saw the DVD of this game last night, and I have to agree-- NBC certainly knew how to cover college football then, especially a game as important as this one. The graphics, while unmistakably old-school, were a cut above all the intrusive and invasive bugs that are used nowadays. The frequent visits to the coaches' boxes, especially Clemson's, also made the game extremely entertaining. IIRC, they don't do that much anymore.
That Clemson team cheated with recruiting, though....Just like the Gators under Charlie Pell. The Fridge was a great DT, but he was brought in through violations.
are you kidding me? what do you base this prediction on? the fact that Nebraska beat one team with a record of at least 7-5. get your s** straight and be looking for a beat down on jan 1. GO TIGERS!!!
Am a huge Nebraska fan and remember this game well. The best offensive center of all time played in this game, Dave Rimmington of Nebraska. And Dave was 'owned' all game by Clemson's nose guard non other than Refrigerator Perry. We could not keep this guy out of our backfield. Someone correct me but I think Perry was a true freshman starter. Rimmington was a great center but Perry was one quick SOB.
It was what the "powers that be" decided was the best at that time. Tom Osborne said it was his best team ever as Nebraska head coach. Their offensive lineman, Dave Remington, was the Outland Trophy winner for that season (and William Perry manhandled him the entire game). They had lost two of the first three games of the season, but had won the last eight games going into the Orange Bowl. Pittsburgh may have been the better team, but they had lost their final regular season game to Penn State.
@tigerray that was his best team in 1981 2 yrs before the team that went undefeated and lost in the Orange Bowl 13 yrs before he won back to back National Championships
They also beat Georgia that year...they were the national champions in 1980 (the year prior). BTW, the previous year was a close game too...that year Georgia won. Also, a few years earlier Clemson beat Ohio State in a bowl. A controversial game where the Ohio coach hit a Clemson player. I think Danny Ford was only 29 or 30 then.

Correction. Nebraska beat 2 teams with AT LEAST a record of 7-5......same as Clemson. What is your point?

That's what they said in '82.
Good luck!

Neither team is gonna "murder" one another. It's just gonna be a rematch. A damn good rematch at that.
