@ABGAN100 : not beyond comprehension -- fair taxation of the wealthy does not "destroy wealth creation" . Germany and Sweden tax the wealthy fairly, and are economically highly successful economies in which wealth is widely shared (unlike the US).
@michael1618034 Sweden's GDP is about 1/4 that of California, and Germany only about 1/4 greater than California, the structures of their economy's are entirely different! far less complex, they also have lower corporate taxes than the US. Sweden's corporate tax rate is 13% lower than the US and Germany corporate tax rate is 10% lower than the US.
Social mobility in this country has trended down with every tax cut and deregulation over the past 30 years. Still, some people would have us believe the reasons those policies aren't working is that we haven't gone far enough in our tax cuts and deregulation. They just won't rest until a chosen few lives behind wrought-iron gates, while everyone else lies awake at night wondering how to pay the kid's medical bills.
Warren makes excellent points, no matter the unoriginal insults hurled at her.
@1350chaucer Lack of social mobility has nothing to do with taxes or regulation.
In 1950-1970 the entire world was relatively poor compared to the USA. Commodities were cheap for this reason. Lack of developments in technology made outsourcing logically impossible.
Present day: The entire world is as competitive as we are, technology allows people half way around the world to collaborate, and those people formally surviving on 20c/day now want steak and potatoes just like us.
SO by her rationale, people who are less of a burden on government should pay less in taxes? According to her rant, if taken literally, employers who hire employees who were educated at private rather than public schools should pay less in taxes. Is that right? Or is she just assuming based on ??? that the more people earn in income the more government resources they consume?
Every dollar earned in this country should be taxed identically (w/ no deductions). Truly the only fair system.
NO one would hire me because I am Autistic. SO I started my own business without one CENT of GOVT assistance & this BITCH says I didn't do it on my OWN? What a lying elitist PRICK!
What a waspy way of expressing the crab mentality that's kept investors out of inner-city neighborhoods and compelled those neighborhoods’ highest achievers to flee them for generations. Warren’s taking it national only because such rhetoric is a proven way to win elections, on account of the economic ignorance of the general public. She’s disgustingly greedy for power. Her supporters need to read Sowell's Basic Economics. They're ignorant as hell.
Ask yourself why investors don't like inner city neighborhoods? Its full of black and hispanic poor people killing each other over the 100 year drug war that has built more prisons since schools since 1980. We spent TRILLIONS of dollars on killing people in the middle east for 11 years, could have bought healthcare for everybody and helped inner city kids be more educated so they don't grow up and start killing eachother over money and chase all the investors away.
@FranticSelf >>all paid for by the government, by the people's tax dollars<<
But the people only earned their tax dollars from jobs created by business owners. They would be unemployed otherwise and the government would be on the hook for finding jobs for all those people--with fewer tax payers to fund those jobs. Factory owners are owed a huge debt for shouldering all the risk and expense of creating all those taxpaying jobs. The factory owners don't owe government a goddam thing more.
These Occupiers are crabs; with adBuster's "99%" rubber bands around the claws they have for brains, so they won't think individually and start eating each other alive cuz, obviously, without those restraints, they'd all just be individually hating everyone who makes more money than they personally do. Like the 4% just under the top 1% are any more virtuous, right? LOL The rubber bands are for safe-handling the fucking dolts so ruling-elite socialists like Warren can eat them for a power lunch.
She acts like the rich detract from society as opposed to contribute to it. If I build a factory I have to pay for it, I have to pay the workers, I have to buy the land, buy the materials, transport the materials and pay taxes on all of that; more than any other income bracket. What is she talking about "the rest of the us paid for"? "Paying forward for the next kid who comes along" means give more money to me (the government) because I know how to spend it better than you (and they don't).
@Arcturistheballer I agree, even though roads are built msotly by our tax dollars it's not like people, including herm write that check out of the kindness of their heart, you write that check on April 15th because you have no choice. The idea that you will hide behind that as an excuse to grab more money from some of the bigger job creators is a fallacy. I agree with you.
The system of earn what you can, but pay some back to benefit the system you yourself have benefited from, ONLY WORKS IF EVERYONE PAYS THEIR FAIR SHARE!!!
The system only works if EVERYONE participates as intended.
What happens when SOME people decide to live on EBT?
What happens when SOME people never, ever earn money to contribute back to society?
What happens when SOME people never stop TAKING??
What happens when SOME people TAKE $100,000s of dollars over a life time and GIVE NOTHING BACK??
What a brilliant lady. The first person to ever come out of the USA with sensible and verifiable anti-capitalist practices that cause a nation to live in poverty, debt, and exploitation by Banks,Goods manufacturers, and Government policies that work in one direction, the direction that benefits only the VERY RICH and CAPITAL OWNERS in society.
Why is it wrong that only the very rich and the medium rich should benefit the most??
If you contribute the most, surely you should reap the most rewards???
My 65 year old dad (not retired and won't be for a long while yet - he loves working too much) has worked since the age of 14, (in the UK, not USA) and has risen to the level of a senior contract mechanical engineer, working around the world for around £100,000 a year (say $150,000).
...(continued) He pays some 50% income tax. The thanks he gets for decades of hard work, with 40 or 50 hour weeks, (building and designing oil processing plants for 3rd world countries who can't do it themselves, like Angola) is millions of unemployed, uneducated, endlessly-child-producing, government-money-taking, free-house-getting, bills-paid-for-you UK citizens. Where is the 'rich person benefit'? His only benefit is to see my Mum, myself and brother safe, healthy and in a home.
...(continued 2)....and the only way he has that benefit IS FROM HIS OWN HARD WORK. The story I have told you is only for my Dad. The same applies for my Mum, who got paid a relative pittance, as a law-degree-having STATE PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHER who was nominated for Australian Teacher of the Year but refused the nomination because she is so modest. Capitalism works PERFECTLY, if and only if EVERYONE works hard. If some don't, then it is easy to say "ooooh look, rich and poor are....
...(continued 3) ...completely different in terms of their wealth, therefore the rich people have too much and should give it to the poor people". NO! How that should read is actually "ooooh look, hard workers and non-hard workers have different levels of wealth, those non-hard workers should WORK HARDER".
The truth hurts, and the truth is that some people are lazy. Not all, but some.
@alexbreezybreeze You make excellent points, but it doesn't just come down to hard work/merit as you suggest. There is inefficiency--you can work your ass off kicking stones around a parking lot and not get anything for it--and there's also the unalterable cosmic injustice of life which more productive people are not to blame for. Politicians are not gods capable of eradicating tragedy from the human condition in the first place so the most productive people owe them no tithes.
A structured economy where nobody can make 500X more than anybody else would be an economy structured on paying people for something other than their productivity. Thousands more people were willing to pay to hear Pavoratti sing than to hear the average person sing. Due to unfair circumstances--being born with a great voice--Pavoratti was thousands of times more productive than others and paid accordingly. What should people be paid for if not productivity? Just for trying?
...and the # of such people is not constant. Socialism artificially lowers the price for being lazy. What happens to consumption of something enticing when its price is lowered artificially? Consumption goes up. Socialism breeds sloth. The loss to humanity from millions of people not being as productive as they could be, because they live in subidized sloth, is itself a tragedy far outweighing any meager benefits of socialism.
France has #1 rated healthcare in the world and enjoys prosperity, peace, and happiness. To fantasize about a conservative dream world where we would all be just a bunch of lazy people who sit at home and collect a check...wait isn't social security and medicare socialist programs that eat up 2/3 of all our tax dollars every year? Its already here, it's just for elderly. Conservatives dont care if the nation crumbles as long a grandma's still alive in her coma for 20 years
@Learning2Heal >>France has #1 rated healthcare in the world and enjoys prosperity<<
5-year cancer survival rates:
Prostate Cancer: France, 73.7%; USA, 92.3%
Breast Cancer: France, 79.8%; USA, 84%
Source: "Cancer survival in five continents: a worldwide population-based study" (Lancet Oncology, July 17, 2008)
So... How many more Americans must die every year of prostate and breast cancer before American healthcare will be rated as "highly" as French healthcare is rated, Dreamer?
So nobody got rich on their own. Nobody got an iPod on their own either. You didn't get your computer on your own.
What Warren and her ilk do is overvalue cash and undervaluing the products people buy.
Nobody pointed a gun at the iPod buyer to get the dollar. The iPod buyer was happy to give the dollar to Apple (and thereby billionaire Jobs) because they valued the iPod more than the dollar. Free and equal exchange.
The dollar that went to Apple was taxed twice, PLUS their payroll taxes
Good for the people of the USA and dogs of the USA. Elizabeth wouldn't strap a dog to the roof and drive for 12hrs from Boston to Ontario, stopping only to spray off the dog poo and then continuing on. Only Romney is capable of such an uncaring act! Stay out of Beantown Mitt!
So what - there are nobody out there that made an iPod on their own. They moved their newly purchased iPod on the roads that we built. You purchased an IPod and it turned into something that you liked to listen to - good for you. So why, then does this shallow lady only talk about the iPod manufacturer?
Her thesis is "Nobody got rich on their own," and the ones who are rich now have violated the social contract dictating that they should help pay for future generations.
"why does [she] only talk about the iPod manufacturer"
Because the iPod manufacturer and its ilk are the entities with all the money, and they're paying less in taxes than the rest of us.
Why should they get special treatment by the government?
Hint: "because they pay the politicians" isn't a good answer
@Noctournis I know. God Bless her. She gives all of us ignorant people hope that we can rise to the top. You don't have to know anything to get where she has. You only need to feel things.
Bravo! pay it forward for society to thrive...a simple idea anyone can understand. why must we relive the mistakes of the past over and over? our most primal urges unchecked turned into The Great Depression for our society and rules where passed like the Glass–Steagall Act to prevent it's recurrence, then somehow our government gets bought & repealed this Act that worked so well for 70+ years due to pressures from big business that has grown too big to fail & the cycle is restarted :"(
I would like to make a donation to the Elizabeth Warren campaign, but I need to mail it. I want to send her a copy of Economics in One Lesson by Henry Hazlitt. I'm surprised she hasn't read it yet. Does anyone have a mailing address at which she will be able to get the book?
Lizzy supports the "Occupy Movement" how many people have been raped at a Tea Party event? how many times have Tea Partiers rioted with police? How many windows have they smashed? How many time have they destroyed public parks? You keep great company, Lizzy!
@go2mikerenzi you're a moron. how many ows are racist ignorant rejects of the defunct kkk movement? teabaggers are dumb. youtube their conventions where they are asked basic questions regarding their beliefs. they are fucking clueless, in general. just b/c teabaggers are sheep conditioned to ape what they hear from fox news doesnt make them morally superior to ows people. but, you are a dumb republicunt, so what can i expect
if a company has a fleet of trucks in MA. they pay excise taxes on all the trucks, they pay registration fees.. so actually a business with a fleet of trucks contribute more than any private citizen driving his Toyota Penis
NOT class warfare Lizzy? why is it if someone builds a factory he is no longer among "the rest of us"? you set a dividing line but you say it is not class warfare? people get rich in America despite the Government not because of it.
These Occupiers are crabs; with adBuster "99%" rubber bands around the claws they have for brains, so they won't think individually and start eating each other alive cuz, obviously, without those restraints, they'd all just be individually hating everyone who makes more money than they personally do. It's not like the 4%-2% are in any way more virtuous than the 1% LOL The rubber bands are for safe-handling the fucking dolts so ruling-elite socialists like Warren can eat them for a power lunch
Whatever you do, don't think like an individual or you will be useless to Warren because, by her logic, it's not just the top 1% that owes you more money. It's everybody who earns more than you--whatever you make--that owes you. But try to organize a maurauding band of Leftists around that idea! lol The point is just to garner support from unthinking people so Elizabeth can make those who accomplish more than she has still answerable to her. She's using a SCAPEGOAT in a game of CAPTURE-THE-FLAG
That's his or her way of saying: Please! Please! Can we change the subject? Pretty please! I can't defend the crap coming out of Warren's mouth, so can we please talking about sombody else; somebody who I hate?
Great minds keep everything in the context of ideas.Average minds gravitate toward discussing events. Small minds always try to direct the discussion toward discussing personalities.
What a waspy way of expressing the crab mentality that has kept investors out of inner-city neighborhoods and compelled those neighborhoods’ highest achievers to flee them for generations. Warren’s taking it national only because such rhetoric is a proven way for politicians to win elections, on account of the economic ignorance of the general public. She’s disgustingly greedy for power.
Hmm1..Why do these 99/1%ers want me to not think about myself individually? I mean, I'm an individual so logic tells me that it's not just the very top 1% that I should be pissed about not paying me back for all I've done for them. It should be at least the top 40%. In fact, just nailing the upper 40-2% and leaving the 1% alone might get me paid back a lot more of what I'm owed than if we just target the top 1%. Why doesn't Warren care about that? Don't I deserve better compensation? SCAPEGOAT
The 1% is just a scapegoat singled out as irrationally as Hitler singled out "Jews" What is it that the 8%-2% are doing that is so much more virtuous than the 1% such that they escape our lance? It's all about Elizabeth: America's Ex-Wife. She loses support the further down the scale we focus and her personal quest for power is all this is about. Never vote for people who arbitrarily scapegoat minorities in our own community just to acquire power. It's disgusting. They are evil; ALWAYS tyrants.
But you would never hear anyone on Fox "news" highlight this truth. For them it's just about protecting the rich (like billionair Rupert Murdoch) and demonizing the unlucky poor. There is a class war going on in this country, but it's not the middle class fighting against the rich, it's the rich and corporate interest fighting the poor.
Finally, you have to add sales taxes. Because the poor spend most of what they earn, most of their income is subject to sales tax. Mitt Romney spends 15% of his income tops, so that only that portion of his income is taxed through sales tax.
People like Mitt Romney, who earned over 20,000,000.00$ in 2010 paid an effective tax rate of 13.9%.
Meanwhile, most poor people, for example in New York City, pay 7.7% in payroll taxes, 6.45% in state income taxes, about 3% in city (or municipal) income taxes. Now add property taxes which are much higher than Mitt Romney's because most of their wealth will be real estate, unlike Mitt whose real estate probably makes up about 10% of his net worth.
What you say is factually incorrect. Everyone pays taxes and everyone has paid for roads and other public works programs. The statistic you use applies to FEDERAL income tax. But people you don't have enough money to have to pay federal income taxes still pay payroll taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, etc.
The poor who don't pay any federal income tax actually pay more in taxes overall than most rich people because most of what they earn they spend on goods.
"Towering genius disdains a beaten path. It seeks regions hitherto unexplored. It sees not distinction in adding story to story, upon the monuments of fame, erected to the memory of others. It DENIES that it is glory enough to serve under any chief. It scorns to tread in the footsteps of ANY predecesor, however illustrious. It thirsts and burns for distinction; and, if possible, it will have it whether at the expense of emancipating slaves or enslaving freemen."
...But if the dangers in our own times were limited to those of "towering genius", there would be much less danger than there is. However, all that is needed are towering presumptions, which are increasingly mass-produced in our schools and colleges by the educational vogue of encouraging immature and inexperienced students to sit in emotional judgment on complex evolution of whole ages and of vast civilizations. This is what produces the Warrens of the world. Those students end up like her.
A seat in Congress, a gubernatorial or presidential chair, none of that belongs to the family of the lion or tribe of the eagle. Occupying Ted Kennedy's Seat will never satisfy an Alexander, Caesar, or Napoleon. Such an Ego needs a movement occupying Wall Street so those who achieve great things without Her Guiding Hand can be forced to kneel before Her to retain their earnings. She must institutionalize having all great achievers answer to Her for her blessings. Thus, SOLYNDRA etc.
"YOU... HIRED workers the rest of us paid to educate"
Well you didn't pay them a wage, you stupid, self-righteous bitch. "The rest of you" didn't pay for their on-the-job training, experience and career path, you radical-Leftist blowhard. The rest of you would still be on the hook to not only do all that for your vaunted workers, You'd also have to shoulder the burden of somehow coming up with a way of meeting the needs and desires of my customers without wasting scarce resources. WE'RE EVEN!
The solution is to make government smaller so these corporations loose that partnership, go back to a gold standard so out of control government spending is limited, abolish the federal reserve system and return the issuing of money back to the treasury so the people know whats happening with their money. Let the market correct itself by liquidating the debt and and let true capitalism take its course by letting wall street go bankrupt!
This women is part of the problem, she believes in more regulations to end the corruption and greed. But in reality its the corrupt and greedy who write the regulations because Washington is a big auction sold to the highest bidder! And she thinks if they got rid of the unconstitutional income tax, it would destroy America because their would be nothing to pay for stuff like infrastructure! In reality income tax is used for the nation building, policing the world and welfare for the rich!
@xkleenexk Great minds keep everything in the context of ideas. Average minds gravitate toward discussing events. The smallest minds get stuck on discussing personalities. You are demonstrating here the smallness of your mind.
If what she said was sincere, then she'd say ALL people who make more than whatever you make should pay more in taxes. LOL There! Try to turn that into a political football! See how scapegoating works, people? You have to keep people from thinking on their own and instead tell them what to think. You only hate the top 1%; not the top 2% or top 10% or top whatever it is that make more than you, cuz then she will lose too many supporters. It's all about Elizabeth; America's Ex-Wife. She's greedy.
@fiveinslide6 You're such a troll. Are you arguing against a progressive tax system?? What is the alternative, a flat tax that disproportionately impacts low income and middle class families? Just look at the likes vs. dislikes on this video. Elizabeth Warren is gaining support from across the country. I would be honored to have her as a Senator and hope she runs for President one day.
@LADudeCPP The proletariat will...wrest, by degree, all capital from...bourgeoisie to centralise all...production...[T]his cannot be effected except by...despotic inroads on the rights of property and...conditions of production; by means of measures...which appear economically...untenable but which...outstrip themselves...These measures will...be...1. Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes.[Kelo v. New London] 2. A heavy progressive...income tax.
Despite having been a lawyer's son and having been given a law school education, the man who wrote that--Karl Marx--refused to earn a living as a matter of principle. He didn't care one bit about the disproportionate impact his decision had on his children; three of whom died precisely because that ne'er-do-well refused to take advantage of every opportunity afforded him and provide for his own children. His very own subsidized life debunks his disgusting effort to justify his existence.
So long as Engels gave Karl enough money to keep his big tummy full of food, the disproportionate impact of a ne'er-do-well lifestyle on his children was fine with Karl. But had Engels cut off Karl and had Karl's wife no inheritance to subsidize his existence, Karl would have felt very differently about that lifestyle. He would have felt it first in his own tummy and would have had to make himself useful to other people.to avoid the fate he was fine with providing for 3 of his children.
Abortion grossly disproportionately impacts the reproduction of black Americans. Margaret Sanger herself specifically said she founded Planned Parenthood to "limit the mud races". Does the disproprotionate impact of state funded abortion bother Leftists? Or is the "disproportionate impact" card pulled out only when ruling-class government workers' fat pensions are at stake; when there's money to be had? Leftists are so hypocritical
Warren's right! I'm mad as hell at individuals who contribute the most to society and whom are paid back by society in the form of high earnings. They owe me a helluva lot. I've done so little for so long, just to stay out of their way and leave all those opportunities available for them. When am I going to get my free stuff out of respect for how little I've taken advantage of my free education compared to those rich, greedy, big earners living the easy life? Leftists live in Opposite Land.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ALL YOU GOTTA DO IS YOUTUBE "OBAMA OUTSOURCING JOBS TO CHINA" America you are finished if you keep this party in power. You need a third party or your country is fucking finished. Most Americans especially in the mid age to older should not be allowed to vote. Your really bad at it.
And another thing to ALL "Republicans", WHY DO YOU BLIND YOURSELVES??? "Republican" policies ruined the U.S. relations with the world, KILLED hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women and children, almost led the U.S. into financial ruin, but you still want to suck each other's dicks. YOU STUPID FUCKS.
@ABGAN100- How pathetically stupid you must be for you to think the net worth of Bush (the evil-doer, not Sr.) has anything to do with whether or not he's responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women, and children is rational. Wake up dumb shit.
Latest leftist tripe. "Nobody gets rich on their own" -- The only way businesses can "get rich" is by using roads, schools, courts, etc. "that everyone else paid for."
Everyone else DID NOT pay for them! 47% don't pay a nickel in income taxes. Those roads, bridges and schools were paid for by the taxes from the businesses and their employees.
It's that 47% who aren't paying their fair share for the public goods they use.
@dmulliganx She's talking about the very tiny .01% of rich business owners who claim they owe nothing back to the other middle class folk who paid for the environment that allowed that person to succeed.
@dmulliganx Yeah, cuz I know it's not me. I'm pretty sure if some rich dude owed me something, I'd know about it and I'd be collecting. So who are these people owed so much for their not being as productive as the top earners? Lack of productivity just must be compensated! Cuz they're not just less productive; they have... FEEEELINGS! WHOA WHOA WHOA FEEEELINGS!
He fights against raising taxes on capital gains, which is where he made a significant portion of his wealth.
Mitt enjoys the wealth he does because he has a government that protects his property rights over companies and shares that he owns. Those companies do well because governments protect the integrity of their business contracts and property.
Is it too much to ask for the wealthy to pay their fair share?
@Spudst3r >>She's talking about the very tiny .01% of rich<<
Oh, ok. Then she must just be manufacturing a scapegoat cuz otherwise ALL people who make more money than me would owe me something for my somehow making it possible for them, all in the same way, right? So this isn't really about principles. She's just manufacturing a scapegoat. Don't vote for people like that. Only tyrants do that. This woman has tyrannical inclinations; scapegoating that minority just like Hitler scapegoated Jews.
@fiveinslide6 All successful people have the government to thank partially for their success.
There's no denying that hard work got many wealthy people to where they are, but you have to recognize how vital governments have been in providing a stable climate for wealthy people to be successful. Good luck running a business without a government to protect your property, patents or contracts.
@Spudst3r >>All successful people have the government to thank<<
And government has all successful people to thank for shouldering the risk/expense in finding gainful employment for people and for delivering all those goods and services to consumers--even to government itself. The government knows that, without the contribution made to society by those successful people, government would still be on the hook for finding all those people jobs and delivering all those goods and services.
@Spudst3r >>All successful people have the government to thank<<
Don't unsuccessful people also have the government to thank for police and roads and stuff? But if they're not also shouldering the risk and expensive of gainfully employing people and delivering goods and services to large numbers of consumers while optimizing expenditure of scarce resources; if they're just parasites, then who really owes a debt to who? Leftists get everything backwards. They live in Opposite Land.
@fiveinslide6 You misquoted me, I said all successful people have government to *partially* thank for their wealth, which is true. Hard work and risk is also a factor.
Unsuccessful people do benefit from government too & both groups should pay their fair share of what they can reasonably contribute.
And for the rich, understanding the diminishing marginal utility of money is important to establishing why the rich pay more. Each dollar sacrificed is of less burden to a rich person than poor.
@Spudst3r >>for the rich, understanding the diminishing marginal utility of money is important to establishing why the rich pay more<<
Ah, but for government, understanding the augmenting marginal profligacy of tax revenue marks your consideration a red herring and reestablishes the superior utility of a flat tax. As a rule, dollars are invested more wisely by those who earned them rather than by incompetent government officials with visions of grandeur but little achievement. e.g. SOLYNDRA
Furthermore, there is more benefit to a poor worker in putting a whole, privately-invested dollar into their pocket than in sending that dollar first to government officials who secure their political futures with a large portion of it before giving only the remainder to the same poor worker.
@fiveinslide6 I like free markets, but I also like equal opportunity. Why not get goverment out of the way and provide a minimum guaranteed income instead? Goodbye profligacy!
The marginal utility of money is a reason why the rich should pay more than the poor, it's not a red herring. The frustration of comments like Elizabeth Warren are especially in response to people against Obama's Buffett rule that rich people should be paying *at least* the same percentage of their income as others.
@Spudst3r >>Why not...provide a minimum guaranteed income<<
We already have a minimum guaranteed income. It's zero dollars for the totally slothful and selfish and that is perfect just the way it is; everything they deserve. Your equal opportunity begins there. The rest is up to you. Forcing me to forfeit my earnings, just so somebody like Marx can refuse to earn money as a matter of principle--while his kids die in squalor--is atrocious; It's slavery. Marx should starve!
@fiveinslide6 >>It's slavery. Marx should starve!<<
That's my emotioinal reason but there are many other ones that are rational. 1) A guaranteed minimum income sets the price for a slothful existence too low. When the price for something enticing is too low, the public consumes too much of it. Our society would degenerate because lots of people only start supporting their own weight out of fear of the consequences. Think of ne'er-do-well kids with rich parents and Marx with Engels!
>>Why not provide a minimum guaranteed income instead?<<
Another reason is: Out of tragic necessity for the market to work its magic. The reason markets work so well is people are forced to move around from job to job until they find what they're actually good at. We all benefit from this process. Changing jobs is super scary and too many people will just stay in jobs where they're making lots of decisions that impact society but they're not good at it. That hurts everybody.
...A minimum guaranteed income makes job choices too arbitrary. Things are actually like that in government. It's one of the main reasons governments are so slow to improve. Government job security insulates workers from reality feedback about their performance. Changing jobs is arbitrarily decided by workers' supervisors and workers themselves, with those they serve having very little input; whereas markets are driven by consumers who providers must please or go out of business.
Then there's the fact that, with slothful people--with more and more of them because it's been made so cheap to be lazy--with these people you open a can of worms. Once the slothful become a huge voting block, they will only just repeatedly demand raises in their minimum guaranteed income out of pure envy over how other people live--the people out doing the tough work of being productive to pursue happiness while carrying the load for all these disgusting ne'er-do-wells.
Then give people who have very little now and are low-income earners; give them the equal opportunity to amass wealth by not confiscating more of their earnings the first year they manage to make serious money to catch up. They're not rich yet. Don't steal the fruit of their labor and risk-taking and tell them that, if they want it back, they have to go back and struggle for it all over again. That's not equal opportunity.
@fiveinslide6 >>Don't...tell them that, if they want it back, they have to go back and struggle for it all over again<<
Don't worry! They won't tell them that. Some Leftists will come up with prettier words for it and harder core ones will just stick their noses up, castigate the earners for being greedy and walk away self-righteously with their earnings. LOL Leftists!
total fail, Marxist. If you must think poetically, SOCIETY "owes a great debt" to individuals who make great contributions to society. It "pays back" people in the form of their earnings but also in the form of all the other consequences of their decisions as to how they expended SOCIETY'S scarce resources; whether they decided to expend resources wisely/productively or wastefully and self-indulgently.
Just as a deceitful manipulator. She's using the old "debt to soceity" rhetorical trick. You don't know it, but you're ready to give up your rights to the Left's Poetry Class From Hell. Nobody "owes society" anything simply because society isn't a decision-making entity capable of determining exactly what you owe it and when it's finally been "paid back". She masks personal ambition in language of a "debt to society" to trick you into giving her what she wants.
Society is like a wheelbarrow. You can depend on a wheelbarrow. You can contribute to a wheelbarrow by giving it a nice coat of paint. You can detract from one by removing its wheel etc. but you can never OWE a wheelbarrow anything. However, if I had a kid and I wanted my wheelbarrow painted, I could probably trick my kid into doing it for me with language like yours: "Son, this wheelbarrow has served generations of men in our family. Why don't you pay it back by giving it a nice coat of paint?"
See? I've masked my personal desire to get my wheelbarrow painted in poetic language which personifies it, pretending it's a decision-making unit. It's not. Neither is "society".Nobody owes it anything. Politicians have a personal desire to win an election so they do to fools like you what I did to my kid. If you must stay poetic: "Society" owed a debt to some people--people who contributed to society--and that debt was paid in the form of earnings.
Prof. Warren's classic rhetoric disguises her ambition; personal desire to win an election and become a powerful member of Congress to seize other people's money and spend it on what she wants. She's cleverly organizing a marauding band who have the personal desire--out of envy, economic ignorance--to see more money stolen from people who earned it and given to people like Warren. They mask their personal desires in poetic terms of a "debt owed to SOCIETY" to pretend they're being selfless.
She wants to raise the price for investing in the American economy. When you raise the price on something, do more people go for it or fewer? Do we need more investment or less investment in the American economy? Her supporters are economic neanderthals. It's about time that we stop empowering economic morons at times of economic crisis. Sheesh people! Talk about "stuck on stupid".
@happystance8able Your the idiot of the year. You pay a man to fix our crumbling infrastructure. He then has a job to pay for his family’s needs. Simple as that. We could build schools, Create Government manufacturing jobs....the list is endless. All of which is better than your advice. Give tax cuts to wall mart so they can create more Chinese manufacturing jobs. How miss informed you are.
She wants to raise the price for investing in the American economy. When you raise the price on something, do more people go for it or fewer? Do we need more investment or less investment in the American economy? Her supporters are economic neanderthals. It's about time that we stop empowering economic morons at times of economic crisis. @happystance8able THE MORE WE TAX THEM THE MORE THEY ARE GOING TO LEAVE AMERICA?????
What horse crap. They all ready left America. And IBM AND GE JUST PAID 8% Tax last year, THE LOWEST IN THE WORLD. You idiot Republicans want more tax cuts for GE, WALLMART, and IBM. All These company’s manufacture in China and INDIA and Taiwan. IF REPUBLICANS KEEP SENDING TAX CUTS TO CHINA. WHERE WILL OUR CHILDREN WORK? Heck maybe they are Chinese.
@zacharykelway The problem in certain states are taxes. We cannot take many businesses and work for that matter for granted. America is supposed to be powered by a rigorously competitive free market which in turn contributes to the well being of society, But many companies have moved elsewhere because there are fewer regulations and certain incentives that push them elsewhere most of which being how less free our markets have become.
@zacharykelway you go to hong kong it's Really easy to set up shop and start a business there. You only have to sign a bit of paperwork and you are good to go. Here in California you have to sign many documents, Have a city inspector come out and inspect the building, Then have the fire department inspect to see if there are enough extinguishers .etc. Then sign more paperwork. Many inspectors will ping you for the most ridiculous shit that has very little relevant meaning.
@zacharykelway So you either have to A Fight the inspector or B. Brown nose him/her into passing. I understand basic inspection but detailed by the book for many things that aren't necessary = bullshit. People should be able to sell and do whatever they want on their piece of property.
@tehatemachine said, "So you either have to A Fight the inspector or B. Brown nose him/her into passing."
Oh, I see...YOU only have two choices because you couldn't, "C - make your business within the boundaries of the legislation in the first place, like all these other California businesses seems to do."
You said, "People should be able to sell and do whatever they want on their piece of property."
NO! They absolutely should NOT be able to do that.
We all benefit from lower prices resulting from companies not having to deal with America's draconian taxes and regulations. Corporate taxes all get passed on to the consumers in the form of higher prices. Why do you want poor working Americans to pay more for their appliances? Besides, America insources more jobs than it outsources. Why do you want Honda's American employees to lose their jobs? Haven't you created enough unemployment Lefty?
@happystance8able Honda does not even employ half a million American workers idiot. Keep buy forreign dick head. Where will your children work? Maybe you friends in China. STUPID REPUBLICANS GIVE TAX CUTS TO CHINA, some so dumb they try to justify it. Why do you think it costs more for Americans to make something? With all the loopholes our corporate Tax rates are lower than any other country in the world. DROP YOUR PROPAGANDA. by the way Tax created jobs ARE JOBS.
@zacharykelway >>does not even employ half a million American workers idiot<<
You'd force 6.4 MILLION American workers out of their jobs? To lose their health insurance? Why don't you care about those families? Because they must conform to some stupid idea you've come up with in your stupid head? According to the Organization for International Investment, which tracks the effects of offshoring U.S. jobs and work, U.S. subsidiaries of foreign companies employ 6.4 million U.S. workers.
@happystance8able AND FINALLY IT COMES OUT. HE IS CHINESE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you want Chinese Crap go live in China. We want American Made stuff here in America. Look at this Chinese moron. He thinks we can continue to have a country without manufacturing anything. Go Drive your Toyota or Honda in china and take your Chinese shoes and TVs with you Republican. ME AND THE REST OF THE AMERICANS CAN BUILD OUR OWN. CHINESE BOY.
@zacharykelway Furthermore, U.S. subsidiaries of foreign companies support a U.S. payroll of $350 billion, pay 19.1% higher wages on average than all U.S. companies, pay $28 billion in annual federal taxes, reinvest $38.6 billion of earnings back into their U.S. investments, and account for 22.4% of all U.S. exports. Why do you want to destroy the American way of life? Because you've invented an idea in your stupid head that everybody is supposed to now conform to? YOU THINK LIKE KING GEORGE.
@happystance8able >>U.S. subsidiaries of foreign companies pay 19.1% HIGHER WAGES on average than all U.S. companies<<
Now here's a question for you: Is that because foreign companies are less greedy than American companies? Why do you want to put American workers into the hands of "greedier" employers? Shouldn't they stay right where they are? And of course, who the hell are we to order people around and tell them who they have to work for? What are we? NAZIs?
@zacharykelway >>We want American Made stuff here i nAmerica<<
So you're a national socialist? Is this the American NAZI party we're hearing from? The National Socialist American Workers Party? Are you America's Adolf Hitler? Both the American NAZI party and Communist Party USA have thrown their support behind the Occupy Movement. The only thing separating national socialists from international socialists is what they think is necessary for socialism to work.
In Dec2011, CEO Akerson won the Joe Biden Unintentional Revelation of Truth Award by saying “we have 7,000 more people than our competitors working on the same amount of work. It’s like Communist China in the 1960s. There has to be a cultural revolution here.” Why isn’t Dear Leader 0bama stumping for GovMtrs to keep those workers? It's "not the time for profit". Plus, new hires don’t get nearly the package older ‘brother’ do, Why would they do this? NOBAMA 2012
@zacharykelway >>AMERICANS CAN BUILD OUR OWN. CHINESE BOY.<<
After both the American NAZIs and Communist Party USA threw their support behind the Occupy Movement, the racist element of the American Nazi party inevitably reproduces the rift between the international socialists and the national socialists that we last saw emerge soon after Hitler acquired power. if zacharykelway gets his way, a Hitlerian purge will follow. We know how this works now. It all stems from economic ignorance, folks.
@happystance8able HITLER WAS NOT SOCIALIST IDIOT. The tea party says they support the bible. The bible is socialism, it's the first book on socialism, it’s 90% socialism.
Hitler did the same calling nationalism and fascism, socialism. 25*left Communism,20*Left Marxism,15*left socialism, 10*left Liberalism,5*left Labor, Center, 5*right Management,10*right Conservatism 15*right Nationalism, 20*Right Nazism 25*right Fascism. Your SAT score must be crap.
Elizabeth Warren is truly the female Jon Lovitz.

@ABGAN100 : not beyond comprehension -- fair taxation of the wealthy does not "destroy wealth creation" . Germany and Sweden tax the wealthy fairly, and are economically highly successful economies in which wealth is widely shared (unlike the US).
michael1618034 1 day ago

1350chaucer 1 week ago 2
@1350chaucer Lack of social mobility has nothing to do with taxes or regulation.
In 1950-1970 the entire world was relatively poor compared to the USA. Commodities were cheap for this reason. Lack of developments in technology made outsourcing logically impossible.
Present day: The entire world is as competitive as we are, technology allows people half way around the world to collaborate, and those people formally surviving on 20c/day now want steak and potatoes just like us.
martydrooo 6 days ago
SO by her rationale, people who are less of a burden on government should pay less in taxes? According to her rant, if taken literally, employers who hire employees who were educated at private rather than public schools should pay less in taxes. Is that right? Or is she just assuming based on ??? that the more people earn in income the more government resources they consume?
Every dollar earned in this country should be taxed identically (w/ no deductions). Truly the only fair system.

@fiveinslide6 None of what she said is innacurate. Roads, Police, Schooling were all paid for by the government, by the people's tax dollars
FranticSelf 6 days ago
@FranticSelf >>all paid for by the government, by the people's tax dollars<<
But the people only earned their tax dollars from jobs created by business owners. They would be unemployed otherwise and the government would be on the hook for finding jobs for all those people--with fewer tax payers to fund those jobs. Factory owners are owed a huge debt for shouldering all the risk and expense of creating all those taxpaying jobs. The factory owners don't owe government a goddam thing more.

Politicians are not gods capable of eradicating tragedy from the human condition in the first place so the most productive people owe them no tithes.
happystance8able 2 weeks ago
A structured economy where nobody can make 500X more than anybody else would be an economy structured on paying people for something other than their productivity. Thousands more people were willing to pay to hear Pavoratti sing than to hear the average person sing. Due to unfair circumstances--being born with a great voice--Pavoratti was thousands of times more productive than others and paid accordingly. What should people be paid for if not productivity? Just for trying?
happystance8able 2 weeks ago
@alexbreezybreeze >>some people are lazy<<
...and the # of such people is not constant.

Part 4:
But you would never hear anyone on Fox "news" highlight this truth. For them it's just about protecting the rich (like billionair Rupert Murdoch) and demonizing the unlucky poor. There is a class war going on in this country, but it's not the middle class fighting against the rich, it's the rich and corporate interest fighting the poor.
o123p 1 month ago
@dmulliganx
Part 3:
Finally, you have to add sales taxes. Because the poor spend most of what they earn, most of their income is subject to sales tax. Mitt Romney spends 15% of his income tops, so that only that portion of his income is taxed through sales tax.
o123p 1 month ago
@dmulliganx
Part 2:
People like Mitt Romney, who earned over 20,000,000.00$ in 2010 paid an effective tax rate of 13.9%.
Meanwhile, most poor people, for example in New York City, pay 7.7% in payroll taxes, 6.45% in state income taxes, about 3% in city (or municipal) income taxes. Now add property taxes which are much higher than Mitt Romney's because most of their wealth will be real estate, unlike Mitt whose real estate probably makes up about 10% of his net worth.
o123p 1 month ago
@dmulliganx
Part 1:

--Abraham Lincoln

...But if the dangers in our own times were limited to those of "towering genius", there would be much less danger than there is.

Mitt enjoys the wealth he does because he has a government that protects his property rights over companies and shares that he owns. Those companies do well because governments protect the integrity of their business contracts and property.
Is it too much to ask for the wealthy to pay their fair share?

@fiveinslide6 All successful people have the government to thank partially for their success.
There's no denying that hard work got many wealthy people to where they are, but you have to recognize how vital governments have been in providing a stable climate for wealthy people to be successful. Good luck running a business without a government to protect your property, patents or contracts.
Spudst3r 1 month ago
@Spudst3r >>All successful people have the government to thank<<
And government has all successful people to thank for shouldering the risk/expense in finding gainful employment for people and for delivering all those goods and services to consumers--even to government itself. The government knows that, without the contribution made to society by those successful people, government would still be on the hook for finding all those people jobs and delivering all those goods and services.
fiveinslide6 1 month ago
@Spudst3r >>All successful people have the government to thank<<
Don't unsuccessful people also have the government to thank for police and roads and stuff? Leftists get everything backwards. They live in Opposite Land.
fiveinslide6 1 month ago
@fiveinslide6 You misquoted me, I said all successful people have government to *partially* thank for their wealth, which is true. Hard work and risk is also a factor.
Unsuccessful people do benefit from government too & both groups should pay their fair share of what they can reasonably contribute.
And for the rich, understanding the diminishing marginal utility of money is important to establishing why the rich pay more. Each dollar sacrificed is of less burden to a rich person than poor.
Spudst3r 1 month ago
@Spudst3r >>for the rich, understanding the diminishing marginal utility of money is important to establishing why the rich pay more<<
Ah, but for government, understanding the augmenting marginal profligacy of tax revenue marks your consideration a red herring and reestablishes the superior utility of a flat tax. As a rule, dollars are invested more wisely by those who earned them rather than by incompetent government officials with visions of grandeur but little achievement. e.g. SOLYNDRA
fiveinslide6 1 month ago
Furthermore, there is more benefit to a poor worker in putting a whole, privately-invested dollar into their pocket than in sending that dollar first to government officials who secure their political futures with a large portion of it before giving only the remainder to the same poor worker.
fiveinslide6 1 month ago
@fiveinslide6 I like free markets, but I also like equal opportunity. Why not get goverment out of the way and provide a minimum guaranteed income instead? Goodbye profligacy!
The marginal utility of money is a reason why the rich should pay more than the poor, it's not a red herring. The frustration of comments like Elizabeth Warren are especially in response to people against Obama's Buffett rule that rich people should be paying *at least* the same percentage of their income as others.
Spudst3r 1 month ago
@Spudst3r >>Why not...provide a minimum guaranteed income<<
Marx should starve!
fiveinslide6 1 month ago
@fiveinslide6 >>It's slavery. Marx should starve!<<
Think of ne'er-do-well kids with rich parents and Marx with Engels!
fiveinslide6 1 month ago
>>Why not provide a minimum guaranteed income instead?<<
Another reason is: Out of tragic necessity for the market to work its magic. The reason markets work so well is people are forced to move around from job to job until they find what they're actually good at. We all benefit from this process. Changing jobs is super scary and too many people will just stay in jobs where they're making lots of decisions that impact society but they're not good at it. That hurts everybody.
fiveinslide6 1 month ago
...A minimum guaranteed income makes job choices too arbitrary. Things are actually like that in government. It's one of the main reasons governments are so slow to improve. Government job security insulates workers from reality feedback about their performance. Changing jobs is arbitrarily decided by workers' supervisors and workers themselves, with those they serve having very little input; whereas markets are driven by consumers who providers must please or go out of business.
fiveinslide6 1 month ago
Then there's the fact that, with slothful people--with more and more of them because it's been made so cheap to be lazy--with these people you open a can of worms. Once the slothful become a huge voting block, they will only just repeatedly demand raises in their minimum guaranteed income out of pure envy over how other people live--the people out doing the tough work of being productive to pursue happiness while carrying the load for all these disgusting ne'er-do-wells.
fiveinslide6 1 month ago
@Spudst3r @Spudst3r >>I also like equal opportunity<<
That's not equal opportunity.
fiveinslide6 1 month ago
@fiveinslide6 >>Don't...tell them that, if they want it back, they have to go back and struggle for it all over again<<
Don't worry! They won't tell them that. Some Leftists will come up with prettier words for it and harder core ones will just stick their noses up, castigate the earners for being greedy and walk away self-righteously with their earnings. LOL Leftists!
luvmedo56 1 month ago
total fail, Marxist.

She masks personal ambition in language of a "debt to society" to trick you into giving her what she wants.
fiveinslide6 1 month ago
Society is like a wheelbarrow. You can depend on a wheelbarrow. You can contribute to a wheelbarrow by giving it a nice coat of paint. You can detract from one by removing its wheel etc. but you can never OWE a wheelbarrow anything. However, if I had a kid and I wanted my wheelbarrow painted, I could probably trick my kid into doing it for me with language like yours: "Son, this wheelbarrow has served generations of men in our family. Why don't you pay it back by giving it a nice coat of paint?"
fiveinslide6 1 month ago 2
>>pay it back with a nice coat of paint?<<
See? I've masked my personal desire to get my wheelbarrow painted in poetic language which personifies it, pretending it's a decision-making unit. It's not. Neither is "society".Nobody owes it anything. Politicians have a personal desire to win an election so they do to fools like you what I did to my kid. If you must stay poetic: "Society" owed a debt to some people--people who contributed to society--and that debt was paid in the form of earnings.
fiveinslide6 1 month ago
