People won't like me saying this truth, but as I watch plays like this, I think about how awful defense was in the NBA's yesteryears. The player backpedaling from the sideline, then drifting into the lane. What is he doing? Who's he guarding? Why didn't he cut off Hondo's path to the bucket? If Hondo passed to the inbounder at the top of the key, he *also* had a wide-open look. Horrible defense, for an NBA-finals team at that. People should *never* talk about defenders today. It's no contest.
@mystichdx. Back then, you had no help, team, or perimeter defense evidence by Don Nelson on Gar Heard. It was indivdual defense based on throwing off somebody's timing. Sobers thought that since Havlicek is right-handed he make him drive to the left. If he had played 70's defense, he would have grabbed his hip before the dribble after the catch but he was afraid when Havlicek caught it far from the basket. Refs called fouls away from the basket, if you grab. Just a great shot by John.
@Ariamaluum But I'm not talking about the player guarding Havlicek, nor the Gard Heard shot. I'm talking about the player "guarding" the inbounder during Havlicek's shot. He is 15 feet off of the inbounder, and yet makes no motion towards Havlicek either. You're right, apparently there is no concept of help or team defense in that play. That is why I said people shouldn't criticize defenses of today. They haven't begun to see poor defense.
@mystichdx . The guy was Ricky Sobers and if you watched the timeout before the inbounds. You can hear the Phoenic coach indicating not to get close to him only when he gets to the paint.
Jerry West was nicknamed "Mr. Clutch" and deservedly so.However, Sam Jones of the Bill Russell era Celtics would have been remembered as the best clutch shooter ever, except for one thing..no ESPN in those days. Sam Jones was 9-0 in game 7's, and averaged over 27 points per game in game 7s... Sam's regular season scoring average was only 17.7 ppg, so that will give you and idea why Bill Russell said that in a game 7, he'd take Sam Jones as a teammate over anyone who ever played the game.
Havlicek is the non clutch player of all time, he scored a lot of great final baskets but then the others scored to tie the game. The 1974 Finals Game 6 was the same, Havlicek scored but finally KAreem won the game with that legendary sky-hook.
what an incredible game, those shots were just spetacular. Boston won that game barely even in the 3rd overtime 128-126, Paul Westfield almost stole a quater length pass with 10 tics but Jo-Jo White was able run the clock down and shot that famous hook shot (not made).
That was an awesome memory and an incredible Finals. Wanted to see Gar Heard's moonshot from the sideline though as it was an even more incredible shot.
@joesakic91 it was an exciting game. both teams played well. the CELTICS ( which i loved in the 1970's ) blew a 22 pt. lead & they managed to win by luck. the celtics bench were a big help towards the end. enjoy. ****

Wait, Havlicek is non-clutch because someone else managed to score a late bucket after him? That may be the worst post in the history of YouTube.
