I love when those who are versed in over-used rhetoric think they can argue politics. Begin by defining the Republic as "Rule by Law"... because all other forms are lawless. Sorry Your Majesty, England is lawless.
@robertlindsay2 I don't want to look like an idiot but wouldn't England be a republic though because it is a constitutional monarchy and the Queen really has no power?
All men being created equal is fundamentally a Republican anti-democratic anti-oligarchy concept. Democracy is narcissistic, in that you want your will, and the majority will, to rule. In a Republic, following natural law, you understand that all men are created equal, and the other peoples views/ lives have to be REPRESENTED through government too. It is premised on the highest ideals of humanity.
I am certainly opposed to the current Oligarchy, but this video lacks objectivity. The expressed 'Republican' ideal of the creation of a "fixed body of law, not subject to majority whims..." as suggested by Solon and referenced at 3:31 is also potentially dangerous when it is the ruling class elite who are charged with writing the laws and determining what is in the best interest of the people. That is why our Republic has failed.
@00RoninSamurai00 The fact is, no form of government will ever succeed until THE PEOPLE are able to think critically, ethically, unselfishly, and responsibly in order to ensure the establishment and protection of laws that are fair and in the best interest of ALL. Individualism must be balanced with the social responsibility required to maintain a healthy society, because, like it or not, we are all in this together. We MUST look out for each other, not just ourselves.
@00RoninSamurai00 EVERY citizen needs to learn about government and become active, instead of sitting on his or her ass and expecting someone else to protect their human rights. Good government is the responsibility of ALL.
When the sherrif arrives, it sounds to me like you are in favor of power authority figures, not necessarily law, but authority. You should favor the politcal left is what this looks like to me
Why instead of fighting to fundamentally have one of them, why not mix them? Cuz after all, a good republic has democratic ways and a good democracy needs laws.
And how does the law rules the government in a Republic exactly, if laws are written and passed by congress, and people need money to become lawyers, and politicians? Republic as you describe it is not possible Sr, it is either a Democracy regulated by law, or you end up with an Oligarchy. That's what we have now, people trying to destroy a democracy to make it into an Oligarchy.
@emif1225 and i can't believe people are still as ignorant as you are, even after watching this basic, and i mean super basic understanding of wtf is happening in our country....keep being nieve...guess for some its better to just pretend everything is ''OK''....fuck underconsumption, self- sacrafice, personal responsibility, real freedom...right?... asss
@jaygillette71 I don't believe there is no hope if you are American you at least have a written constitution that defines your powers. Here in the UK our head of state is a Monarch who can authorise anything by royal decree. If they don't listen to the people eventually it will lead to revolution just as is approaching in Greece. The more force they apply the more outrage occurs.
Wait............ OK, so the Romans went from a republic to a democracy and then to an oligarchy. So republics aren't stable by virtue of past experience.
So by the logic of video we should take it off of the scale.
Hmmm....
That leaves only oligarchy. Guess we're all doomed.
Maybe we shouldn't have eliminated all those other types of government from the scale by calling them 'unstable'.
@7theeng7 Actually, the Republic was working, until the people turned over power to the government... much the same as what's gone on here over the last few decades. We just need to get back to the Republic part, which the Elite few are going to fight tooth and nail, and quite unfairly. Please don't give up yet, we're not doomed until we all give up!
@7theeng7 It's a question of sovereignty the American system of a constitution to restrict the power of government is fine on paper but who enforces the constitution? Unless the people are preapred to revolt against the government it relies upon the government restricting themselves. Therefore the only sensible method is to place sovereignty in the people in a Democracy were elected officials pass laws but those laws are returned or approved by referendum of the people thus limiting oligarchy.
@cheyaura So the people elect officials to legislate and then vote on the legislation. The only thing keeping the political elite from selfish politics is the attentive public.
If the people don't hold officials to account, then any government is an oligarchy. A republic is just a Democracy with a list of rules, but if the people are not outraged by their officials actions the government wont police itself. For example, Bush's illegal wire taps. No outrage, no punishment.
@7theeng7 Indeed but in a long-form democracy were any act or statute has to approved by public referendum then they are limited to serving the public interest. No point putting forward something that the public won't vote for.. That is a Question of sovereignty. In such a system there is no need for revolt because each person has real political power. The elected officials are only there as experts to suggest which matters require attention and argue their case which is the way is should be.
communism is probably the most ideal way society should function, if you want progress. Everyone would be on the same page working towards a main goal. There would be many roles for people to do, and the best way to make sure no one gets power hungry, would be to rotate those responsibilities between the people. Republic is nice if the people dont get stupid (like america has gotten) and hand over there rights for security, like this whole war on terror. We are following same path romans took.
This is the stupidest video I've seen in my life, besides, everything said on it is complete bullshit. If you are living in a democracy and the majority people living in your country is so stupid as to decide to take your home away, then its just a problem of YOUR education, not of the system itself, and why would anyone be interested in fucking you up??? That was the most nonsense example I've heard. COMMUNISM RULES!!
Democracy is Tyranny by the majority. When there was East & West Germany ... Citizens would escape from the east to the west. You know why this happened ... East Germans would become doctors and realize they were no better than other citizens under Communist Rule. This led them to flee from the Communist East to the Capitalist West ... where their Communist Education gave them higher social & economic standing under capitalism. Knowledge & understanding has no boundaries
Emif... Are you really a 16 year old American? I guess you are a true example of the problem with Your education. Why dont you prefer nazism instead, it killed less people than communism... but probably the 27 million victims of communism does not prove anyone is trying to F up anyone. We all live in a nice pink bubble and communism just sounds right, isnt it?
Hey look, I wasn't born in the u.s. and believe me, the country in which i've lived my whole life (except for the last 3 months) is FAR from being a nice pink bubble. I tell you, the fact that I support communist system does not mean that I support what communist leaders have done. In fact, I agree with you when you say that the way in which they got to power was violent, and I'm oppose to that. I know what republican's main support is, saying that they have freedom, but in reality they don't
In simple terms I'll define it as a system in which the gov owns everything, in which people work, and the wealth is distributed equally between the citizens. In it's ideal state, there are no social classes and no state, therefore there is no opression, and people live in liberty. I'm missing tones of things, but those are quite the basics I think
How fair do you think it is to call a socialist government who puts enphasis on distributing wealth more equally beetween it's citizens TOTALITARIAN? this video was made to persuade people who don't think by themselves and only read New York Times, well, let me tell you something, the rest of the world has always paid the bills for you. That's not fair at all, that's just what you buy from your media!
@pilimoura Mao, Stalin and Hitler all totalitarian..... all socialist man. Socialist and communism is not, where it's at, don't play rebel and you not ready. We rebel from the bottom up, now.1
Ok, I really don't get it. How the hell do you think a f*cking Republican is elected if it isn't by the majority of the people who vote? OUR SYSTEM IS NOT WHAT THEY WANTED, IT'S NOT WORKING!!! every time I see Hillary Clinton's face I'm reminded that we live in a fucking oligarchy! Bush Sr then Bush Jr. Helloooo, what will it take for people to realize???
In any case the president and his wife actually control nothing, the rich families and huge corporations control things, everyone knows that. And once the oligarchy has chosen you to be in their club, you do their bidding, as we can see with the Clinton's and Obama
No, they weren't initially privileged... they were chosen by the elite during their presidential campaigns... those elite then shaped (and in Obama's case, continue to shape) their views. Both ruled on behalf of the bankers (and the financial sector at large) and if you don't see that, then you're not paying attention.
@unit023 im with ya i truely dont know either we need to stop these rich bastards that dont giva a crap about ANY OF US Dem Or republic They all make back door deals and are friendly to one another All Tyrants And Lets Not forgett the Bankers
Lawmakers control a republic. Since they are not really bound by any higher external 3rd party institution, they may theoretically function in a lawless manner. The law maker is effectively and seemingly paradoxically "above the law". For since they have a monopoly on law, they may theoretically interpret it and defy it as they please. The law is not binding on them. Rather, the law's content and applicability is actually bound to their whims as the ones with power. Again, Oligarchy
The Congressmen are not the ones with any of the power... they are told what to say, and when and how to say it (with a few exceptions like Ron Paul). The banking elite are the oligarchs.
Thank you for this. It is a non-hysterical and reasonable explanation of the progression/regression of government. When people are tired of the ranting and screaming, overemotionalization of the fanatics on all sides, maybe they will be ready to listen. I hope so.
