  • so good

  • Awesome. Reminds me of hymnals from church.

  • what is this movie about??

  • I'm an athiest and I love this song, these women have gorgeous voices.

  • I've known this song since i was very little, i used to watch this movie alot with my dad before he died so I'm so happy to hear this wonderful song again^^

  • I have to sing this song in show choir and I am SO excited :DDDD

  • Who cares if the song is about Jesus and God? Does hearing their name make you melt? It's a beautiful song, song from the heart...if you don't believe that's fine. I don't think we should judge anyone by what they believe or by what they don't believe. However, this song shows the hope and faith that many American slaves shared. To me it's beautiful.

  • Can you see the dislike bar? Yea, I didn't think so.

  • How can you dislike this? I'm not even religious, but this song just hits the spot!

  • Why is Jimmy Buffett's 'Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw?' in the sidebar to this video?

  • Im agnostic but i still love this song <3

  • Me and my sister sing this when ever it comes on the radio in the morning on our way to school (were in college)

  • i listen to insane clown posse and i like this i cant believe it.

  • @rastafarianWeedsmoke I'm 14 and someone special to me died 3 years ago i listened to this song for a long time so i know how you feel^^

  • God would not want us to cast stones at one another in his name. Instead of arguing over who is 'right,' let's enjoy this song and be united in spirituality and peace. Songs such as this were written to both honor god and to enlighten the community. If this is so, than let's enlighten eachother by sharing what peaceful behaviors God has instilled into us.

  • my granma is baptist i dont care for religon but still a good song

  • Such a freaking awesome movie and song.

  • love the movie

  • Original is Best. : )

  • the way i see things is that believing in the lord is a faith not a religion the lord is what i have mainly he keeps me happy a lot of the dark times

  • I love this song i wish they'd get rid of rap an stuff an just play this kinda music on the radio:)

  • I've been listening to this song for many years now and I think I can say it's one of my favorite songs ever.

  • I love this song. It gives me hope. :) Everyone should do themselves a favor and listen to this song.

  • My mother would have loved this song. It sounds like the music we sang at home as children. It makes me cry.

  • i listen to this song every night cause it was the song the my brother Lloyd listened to before he past away on September 27th at 6:44 PM R . I . P Lloyd Pete Victor Vorman Jr . Stay Strong bro

  • Aho Relatives,

The Robe is four directions of rainbow colors, each being seen or unseen wear. The Crown is the Golden Era of Brotherhood, when we share our walls of division, even rely and lean upon our relatives. Thank you for sharing.

your devoted servant, White Buffalo Calf Woman, elder crystal child, rainbow warriors of prophecy, iamasundance (dot) info

  • I love this song so much

  • What is wrong with people, LISTEN TO THE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC! IS THAT TO MUCH TO ASK!?

  • @MrFuzzyTrain You have trouble making an intelligent observation, don't you? Well, you can post anywhere, calling people "fags" and "retarded." You're well suited to the task.

  • @MrFuzzyTrain Fag?! I'm guessing you're referring to yourself. Or you're one of those people who just like randomly insulting others on the Internet. I'm a female, living with my big old exhusband, a mother, a Jew/atheist, and I like a lot of Christian spirtuals. Not all but most. Good stuff, in my opinion. You know, for all those on this site who never met a Jew/atheist, it really doesn't wash off in a baptism or by listening to a musical genre. But I appeciate any good, honest, human music.

  • Fag music seriously wtf is that... i mean can someone in the world can be enough fag and stupid to listen that kind of music...fuck man what a gay world i live in because someone upload that fucking video on youtube ... fag

  • Zeus of Mithras, jolly good!

  • @thatmaninclothes she says robe and crown not roman crown

  • @Sammisafetypin10023 Thank you :) But either way, I find it silly to say that this song is not based upon Christian principles. Based upon the time it was made, the large influence Christianity had during that time, and the fact that "going down to the river to pray" was a practice commonly done along with baptisms, we can logically deduce that it is a christian song. Sure, you can look at it however you want, but the Christian influences in the song remain.

  • @thatmaninclothes I wasn't debating o-o just correcting... Sorry if it came out harsh or the wrong way..

  • @Sammisafetypin10023 Well by correcting my first comment, (thank you) you inadvertently falsified the argument that I was making, whether or not you were intending to. Therefore I reiterated, not only to you, but to anyone who happened to chance upon this comment-conversation.

  • @thatmaninclothes dude I can't understand a word your saying nor' can I understand your purpose for arguing with me.

  • @Sammisafetypin10023 My purpose is/was not to argue; my purpose is/was simply to express the reason I commented in the first place. When you pointed out my mistake in understanding the lyrics, which I thank you for, I felt it would be good to re-express my thoughts based upon different reasoning. I did that, with no intention of arguing with you. I'm sorry if I came across the wrong way.

  • @thatmaninclothes okay o-o lawl its cool

  • this song makes me cry everytime i hear it. makes me think of my upbringing in church and people getting baptized at summer camp meeting. but i mostly think of salvation and a fresh start in a relationship with Jesus Christ. i wanna get baptized in the Jordan River.

  • This is a great song by an angelic voiced singer. Appreciate it for what it is and get a life.

  • This just brings to me good memories, going to this little country church in the Ozarks with my family.

  • Jesus is Lord

  • pretty sure i raped the replay on this one.

  • The comment chain on this song is evidence that there is a significant population on youtube whose primary mission on life is to find issues to take with things.

See? I'm doing it right now!

  • I love this song. For being a beautiful song.

  • @Verolatraviesa The feelings mutual friend

  • 18 dislikes?!? Obviously there are 18 people who need jesus!!!

  • @MrNgunter1 well said!

  • I'd love to tell you what she's talking about, but I doubt it can be expressed in mere words to strangers.

  • @warfighter285

Hence my comment. Although the whole "pray" part does indicate a bent towards religion or spirituality.

  • @illtakemysteakmooing Now that is how a christian should be. Love to everyone, no matter who you are.

  • @quietjedi1010101 well said :)

  • peace brothers and sisters. no matter if you are athiest, christian, buddhist..etc. we are all stuck on this planet together so why not just love one each other :)

  • peace brothers and sisters. no matter if you are athiest, christian, buddhist..etc. we are all stuck on this planet together so why not just love one each other :)

  • I've been an atheist my entire life, and enjoyed this song when I first heard it sung in "O Brother Where Art Thou" - after having listened to it again at my local bookstore, I came here to hear it again.

Even Richard Dawkins likes some Christmas carols and religious music. Anybody who thinks this is "offensive" should just shut up and not listen to it.

  • Who cares? If you find it offensive or whatever, don't listen to it, or watch the movie.

  • This is simply a great song.

  • i am an atheist and i find this song nothing short of amazing

  • I am not religious at all and I find this song absolutely beautiful and breathtaking~

  • This song has a lot of memories for me...

  • if you have any cents you no what there going down to the river to do the song dont have to say a thing about jesus the song says it all .....

  • @TheCaptainsWife65

People pray to Jesus, but people prayed LONG before Jesus even existed.

This Movie and The Book was based around the Odyssey which has NOTHING to do with Jesus, or Christianity in any sort.

    Go back to school

Sense isn't spelled like the money cents

Know isn't spelled like when you're disagreeing

They're means "they are" while "there" means a where something is.

    It's "Doesn't" not "Don't"

You seem to be a country woman like I, but your ignorance gives us a bad name.

  • @FailWhaleIsFail doesnt matter of my ignorance of spelling are if i am country ..your part is that your ignorance of the song and my god help you in your ignorance of putting someone down because of the way someone spells are if you think there are country.... if you go to church maybe you would learn what the song really means....may god open your heart and mind 2 seek him fully ... look up the song I give myself away..... and open your heart 2 him !

  • @TheCaptainsWife65

You're a little late on replying aren't you?

There is no reasoning with Christians like you, there are good Christians and then there are the kinds that won't quit and think it's appropriate to shove religion down people's throats.

Think of religion as a penis

    it's okay to have one

it's okay to be proud of it

but don't try to forcefully shove it down people's throats just because of the first two.

This movie nor the song has anything to do with Jesus.

  • @FailWhaleIsFail How doesn't the movie and/or song have anything to do with Jesus

  • @RealistRapture

This Movie and The Book was based around the Odyssey which has NOTHING to do with Jesus, or Christianity in any sort.

And this song honestly doesn't imply Jesus in any part

"Praying" and "Lord" were used long before Christianity.

  • @FailWhaleIsFail The song does imply Christianity. Research indicates the song was written by slaves in the 19th Century who worked in the fields. It was reportedly published in Southern Harmony, a 19th Century hymnal, prior to many African-American spiritual songs being gathered and published during the Civil War and the post-Civil War Reconstruction period.

  • @FailWhaleIsFail ....The song as originally composed was known as “The Good Old Way”, and is attributed to a G.H. (George H.) Allan in the contents section of the slave song book of 1867. The song may also be known as “Come, Let Us All Go Down”, but has also been known as “Down to the River to Pray”, and alternately as “Down in the River to Pray”.

  • @TheCaptainsWife65 You fucking suck grammatically.

  • @xyoureretardedx you shouldn't say something like that it's rude

  • @graystream1 You should learn basic punctuation.

  • @xyoureretardedx And you can shut the fuck up thank you very much!

I don't have to learn punctuation it's the Internet! Who gives a fuck anyway!

  • @graystream1 That's a great reaction to useful criticism. You'll go very far in life with that attitude. Also, learning basic punctuation/grammar makes you look like less of an idiot, so then maybe people will take your opinions seriously in the future.

  • @xyoureretardedx your just a troll, why dont you go pick on somebody your own size? like that rat under your house

  • @theBac001 How am I a troll? By telling someone to learn proper grammar? You should probably find out what trolling is before you call someone out on being one.

  • @xyoureretardedx Okay now you listen to me, i don't have to take this from a punk like you. I apologize for loosing my temper but honestly i was just trying to make my point clear to you that saying things about other people like that is rude. Also the fact that you sit around all day stalking a fourteen year old girls post is really annoying. Please don't take this the wrong way but i am so surprised that a pedophile like yourself is allowed to have Internet in your jail cell.

  • @graystream1 Criticism isn't rude. If someone points out a flaw in me that can be easily corrected, why not correct it? Also, for all you know I could be twelve. What makes you think I'm older? Why are you getting so upset over pointless Youtube comments anyway? You're fucking stupid.

  • I'm not Christian and I think this, and many traditional/Gospel songs are lovely. I get the spirit of them. They're always about reaching for something better or accepting what you have.

  • @brelfan You are so close. I feel so sorry for people who have no faith. May God show you the way.

  • @pegcage im curantly trying to gain my relationship with god like i did wen i was younger. bt the last few years have ben rough. bt im working on it

  • @brelfan I'm a wiccan, and I really love this song, and most gospel and religious music. I think it's because I can relate to it, despite the fact that I'm a different religion, because it's really all the same sentiment, am I right?

  • @allxyouxneedxforever Sure. I've been in Jerusalem and woke up to the musical calls to prayer from the mosques. I thought that was lovely too. Something always lovely about those spiritual outbursts of song. They're intended to connect to something universal, and often do. I'm not so scared of various views that I can't appreciate a universal connection.

  • @allxyouxneedxforever,

If you can get past the fact that most of the people singing the song would have you burnt at the stake, you're fine.

  • Comment removed

  • @allxyouxneedxforever SO I'M NOT ALONE!!!!!! O.O

  • If this bothers or offends people so much, why do they keep listening to it? It's not like the song is talking bad about other religions or anything. It's just somebody asking people to go down to the river and pray with them. If this makes you mad, I'd hate to see how you react when you drive by a church...

  • @BackwoodsBarbie1992 haha don't show Obama this song. He almost canceled the national day of prayer this year because it was too Christian and could offend people. Yet he went with the Muslims on the day they had a huge gathering to pray.

  • @jacksonguitarman you my friend, are highly stupid if you dont understand why obama did that. people these days are so full of christian crap, that other religions should have a chance to shine through. im not anti-christian or whatever, but i respect obama for what he did. and this song isnt christian, i didnt hear one mention of jesus or the bible, so think about that.

  • @bigredbuttons11 actually, it does mention lord but its in the front so...but i do like the thing about Obama.

  • @quickscopedmofo well, lord could be talking about Brahman for all we know, and thank you for saying you liked the obama thing. i dont come across many people who have common sense like that anymore. :)

  • 18 people wernt saved

  • i love this song.its really really enlightening

  • A good song's a good song. Nothing else matters.

  • This isn't the Soggy Bottom Boys. It's Allison Krauss.

  • I listen to this song everyday.May the Good Lord bless everyone and forgive them for their sins.

  • @lamontlewis I did, but i didn't exactly know the words so she just got frustrated xD this worked just fine though!

  • Everybody needs to realize that every last one of us on you tube and around the world need to find our own singular path to whatever afterlife you choose. Stop impressing your views on everyone around you. This should speak to the christian and the atheist alike (yeah 99% of the time your just as bad). Everyone has their own conscience to worry about. Personal beliefs are best kept within a group of like minded people or you are going to loose the argument every time because everyone's correct.

  • i'm not religious at all...but this song is great. It's beautiful. I don't hate christians or any type of religious people, but when i first heard her voice, it put a smile on my face.

  • I care! I hope you are washed in the blood of our savior Jesus Christ. I pray that you can answer the question "Do you believe that God sent his one and only son to die on the cross for you? Jesus is our Lord and Savior, I hope you open your heart and receive the Holy Spirit. If you don't know how ask a Christian or go to a church, don't wait until its too late. I'll pray for you.

  • @scottsachtleben shush, please don't try and ignite a religious debate...just enjoy the music

  • @GreatCanadianX Irony♪

  • @scottsachtleben You people frighten me more than death ever could. I'm jus' sayin'.

  • @scottsachtleben yeah if you are trying to start a religious flame-war keep it to yourself or do it somewhere else

  • I just sang my niece to sleep with this song!

  • @EmmaJane555 You should try singin' "Go to Sleep Little Baby" to her. That'll put you both to sleep. I loved this song, and most of the rest of the songs in the movie.

  • im agnostic im athiest im christian im muslim im hindu SHUT THE FUCK UP no one cares

  • I was so jealous when i found out one of the other choirs at my school got to sing this song!

  • most beautiful song ever. not even that religious.

  • I don't see what controversy about any Christian references are. There is no mention of Jesus in this song, anywhere. They could be praying to Zeus of Mithras as far as the lyrics are concerned. Talking about a non-denominational song.

  • @fiddler1861

quite right, and seeing how this is based on a book written in a time of polytheism it could be taken many ways.

But, this is an old slave standard from the Tennessee valley or Appalachian mountain area i can't remember, so it is safe to assume that the lord is in fact The Lord

  • @Krl246 exactly. blues/bluegrass/country often make use of traditional songs like these, ones passed down and reworked by countless artists. artists performing songs like these today aren't necessarily religious at all, and don't intend to spread any word by playing old traditionals. christians may find this song doubly powerful (as the lyrics are undoubtedly christian), but it is still an amazing piece of music regardless of ones beliefs. im ___ and i still ___ this song, oh wait, nobody cares

  • @fiddler1861 are people actually complaining that this song is specifically christian in a reworking of the odyssey? cause if so that's ridiculous. at best, oh brother where art thou, was LOOSELY based on the odyssey. its set in the american south for f's sake, they speak english, there are cars, guns, fiddle players, radio stations, references to robert johnson, george nelson, the KKK, a BIBLE salesmen... why not complain about any of this?

  • @fiddler1861 Just because the song doesn't have the word Jesus in it doesn't mean it's not Christian. The words "O Lord, show me the way" are there because it is indeed a Christian gospel song. The fact that this song is Christian does not mean it's any less beautiful.People are so concerned that songs should not reflect the faith they were made to reflect. If you cannot enjoy the music because of its associations then don't listen to it, but saying it's not Christian doesn't make it true.

  • @fiddler1861 You are deceiving yourself. The scene in the movie was a Christian baptism. This is a gospel song, written by a Christian. The good old way mentioned in the song, the robe and crown, all speak of Christ.

  • @pegcage It could also be Essene Judaism, who practiced baptism and had a lord as well. And its "good old way" is older than Christianity. But being in a movie remake of Homer's Odyssey by two Jewish brothers, it was probably part of the parody of backwoods superstitions in Dpression-era Mississippi.

  • @fiddler1861 there shouldnt be controversy no matter who they're praying to. its their beliefs, and their right to express it. im an agnostic, and i love this song.

  • @fiddler1861 Knowing the most basic background of this movie, or this song, would tell you that they are praying to the Judeo-Christian God. I'm all for non-controversy, but it's obvious they aren't praying to a flying spaghetti monster. So... this isn't clever.

  • @billdiemer What is it with you narrow minded anti-christian types. Anyone who doesn't fit into your insignificant little world of collective thinking is wrong. Let me clue you in Bubba, it's a big world and there's plenty of room for everyone's views and when it comes to religion no one is more right (or wrong) than anyone else.

  • @myxtlpk I'm not an anti-Christian type...? I am a christian, and I wasn't rejecting anybody's religious beliefs. I was replying to @fiddler1861 and everyone that upvoted his incorrect statement. I pointed out that it's clear in the context of the movie and the song lyrics that this is a Christian song. You quite definitely misread myself and my intentions.

  • @billdiemer the song came from african american slaves some time between the late 1800's to the early 1900's. the point he was making was that anyone could sing this song and have it be about their own beliefs. keep in mind that anti-theists are just as ignorant as religious zealots.

  • @1cme1 I understand the point that he was making. However, his point is wrong. Outside of the lyrics being changed, it's not actually a song that everyone from every faith could sing about their own beliefs. The fact that it is an african american spiritual, refers to baptism in every stanza, and talks about the robe and crown (of Jesus), makes it obvious that it's a Christian song. And how is your last statment relevant?

  • @fiddler1861 thats because theres no such thing as a god or jesus

  • @456789tyler Your so ignorant.... How do you know? you could just as easily be wrong as us...

  • @456789tyler

Ever heard of Fractal Geomety ? (it is a modern higher science) I suppose you have't... it is a higher form of mathmatics based upon studies nearly 100 years ago and exponded upon with the use of modern computers.

Study it and get with back with the ones that believe why there "is' a higher being.

The basic formula is known as the "Formula of God" (founded by an atheist by the way). But, there is no explanation as to where the first carbon atom came in the equation.

  • @fiddler1861 Christianity is a very different religion from other religions before Christians forgive and most religions don't forgive they punish

  • @apk058 Many Christians find it hard to forgive, but rather punish. An extreme example of this would be the Westboro Baptist church. Many other religions inherently forgive, however it is the few extreme peoples interpretation that gives us this brutal impression.

  • @fiddler1861 It's the fact that it says "Good Lord" in it, which has unfortunately narrowly interpreted as Jesus or the Christian god.

Lord can mean many things. Look at the Lord of the Dance! Lord Megatron. Lord Generals in Warhammer 40k. Shit, even kings of societies are referred to as Lord. Really, anyone of higher ranking than someone else may be referred to as Lord by their underlings.

  • @fiddler1861 It is indirectly addressing Jesus however :) The King with the stary crown and robe is God in heaven. But...there are different interpretations.yours was interesting too .

    enjoy the music,

  • @jazzySarah4 How do you actually know that? He has a pretty good point. It is, but that doesn't change anything.

  • Beautiful song it amazes me how something so beautiful and peaceful can stir up so much argument and division. Just let people be because arguments on youtube are never qualitative. The Apostle Paul commands us to live quiet lives, working with our hands and to mind our own affairs so as to walk properly before outsiders & elsewhere the Apostle James tells us that man's anger does not produce the righteousness of God so don't be easily stirred to anger and don't stir others in turn Grace & Peace

  • @LumberjackOf530- :)

    .

  • @LumberjackOf530- i'm 10. Our teachers said we will learn that in 5th grade.

  • A couple of years ago (perhaps longer) Showtime, the cable network, ran a commercial featuring this song, only it was gospel and sung by someone else. The song ran with all of Showtime's biggest shows, and was way better than this version, short as it was. Does anyone know what I am talking about? And if so where can I find a copy of this commercial or song?

  • I love this song

  • hjxhsh

  • ever heard of separation of the church anyone?

  • @1999awsomeful Separation of the Church and State..however, this is not a State ran website nor does the the government have total control of what is posted here. Listen to the song, think of Jesus, and thank Him for eternal life through Him. God Bless.

  • @1999awsomeful Where in the constitution does it say anything about Separation of Church and State? Just want to see if you know. :)

  • @LumberjackOf530 It Doesn't

  • @cochranviper1 And now you understand why I made the comment.

  • Love this song!!!!
