The government governs on behalf of it people, us. We give our consent to its existence and we have the right to now how it functions. Blind faith in believing that it won't act in bad faith is a recipe for tyranny. It grants those in control authority to do anything it sees fit. Any act can be rationalized as acceptable.

The soldiers are there to be in danger. If there is increased risk to them for the sake of transparency of government, then so be it. They can be told of this increased risk up front and quit if they like; they are not conscripts. After what's happened in the past ten years with all the attempted cover ups and illegal govenment activities, transparency is needed now. This post is surprising. Normally you are fairly level headed but you are way off on this entire subject. This exposure of documents is a healthy check on our democracy. The government governs on behalf of it people, us. We give our consent to its existence and we have the right to now how it functions. Blind faith in believing that it won't act in bad faith is a recipe for tyranny. It grants those in control authority to do anything it sees fit. Any act can be rationalized as acceptable.

But there was incriminating information indicating war crimes and possible conspiracies sanctioned by the US governement, military and officials. 'Security' should not be used as a smokescreen to conceal important information from the public thereby granting impunity to war criminals and governements.

I think that news in any form is a necessary evil because in a way it regulates government but let's be honest the NYTimes, and any other newspaper for that matter, knows what they should or should not publish. If it is true that there was no attempt by NYT to account for the consequences of material they were printing, I have to agree that was rash.
