In response to the question as to what color War Admiral was, I do not know if the it is still the practice but in War Admiral's time a horse's registered color was largely determined by the color of the nose/muzzle at the time of filing. War Admiral was listed as a bay, but he become much darker as he grew. All contemporary accounts I have seen say the horse was essentially black, though perhaps not a true, deep black, which is a rare color in thoroughbreds (as is true white).
LOL no. MTB is a closer, and wants no part of being up front. If he does, he has to work his little arse off trying to keep with RA. In the end she would own him by ATLEAST 5 or 6 lengths.
Ya know war admiral was a triple crown winner but on that day of the race (called the race of the century) Seabiscuit put him in his place! Kind of like winning the presidency you have one shot normally at and then thats it! Hard to down or say bad things about (Americas horse ) The name Seabiscuit will always go down in history as the underdog the working man favorite, the little horse who never quit!
i despise it when people say War Admiral was a mean horse and it don't matter if Seabiscuit won the match race the Admiral is better he won the Triple crown so Man o' War (both are related to him) was the fastest horse in the world (my opinnion) War Admiral was a close second and the Bisciut was third and War Admiral is one of my favorite horses i have the breyer model of him :)oh i forgot i'm bein alittle of a trator but i'm rootin for Bronze Sea the Bisciut's grandfilly when she's older
And his loss to Seabiscuit only meant that Seabiscuit was the better horse that day.
Which is also why I don't like the idea of Match Races. They only prove, if ever, which horse is the better in that particular moment. And the risk of ruining a horse, because Match races are usually flat out sprints all the way, is just not worth it.
They were both great horses, let's just keep it that.
Riddle got the choice of race location. Riddle chose the standing start. biscuit didn't just beat him by a head. He beat him by 4 lengths FFS..bunch of crappy excuses. Guess Howard should have given Riddle a 4 length head start too???
The Admiral was a greater horse than Seabiscuit. I have always thought this and always will. A lot of people want to generalize him as "overrated" some such crap just because he lost the damn race to Seabiscuit. What a lot of people don't know is that the race favored the Biscuit from the beginning. Admiral had a history of not running well on the track.
Anyways, The Admiral was a beautiful horse with a great legacy that he deserves to have all to himself, not constantly compared to Seabiscuit.
@rannyray Yes, and that's why War Admiral is ranked a lot higher than Biscuit in the Blood Horse rankings (not just a few places higher) - because he was the better horse.
if man o war was the father of war admiral and hard tack and that hard tack was seabiscuits father then that would make war admiral seabiscuits uncle.
I loved it. In my opinon, the Adimral was far better then Seabisciut. He was just "off" the day of the race. The person that set it up even said he shouldn't have. That the Admiral wasn't ready.
@katklub ...yeah, they assign weight based on previous performances, but not post positions, which is what we we were talking about. Post positions are randomly drawn.
@BlondeSmurfs haha dude. he was black. we know the family who owned him. he was dark bay when he was older. not when he was 5 and under. that's when everyone recognized him. haha do YOUR research biotch.
According to pedigree query, he is brown. he was not registered as black. But, i would say he is a very dark brown, as true black is very rare. yes, he does appear black in videos and pics. the movie "Seabiscuit" portrayed him as a big 17 hand black horse... not true. he was on the small side and a dark bay or brown. i've never heard he was black until the film said it.
the facts were changed to make the movie more entertaining. They wanted Seabiscuit perceived as an extreme underdog. In the film, WA was a big black 17 hand horse. Actually, they were both not very big horses, almost exactly the same size. SB was older than WA & they were closely related in ability & breeding. In the match race they carried equal weights. Even the filmmakers didnt include the significance that SBs SA Handicap losses and win were sensational because of his heavy weight imposts.
What is wrong with you people who cares who was better?! They were both amazing horses and any horse that leads the whole way in that class of race deserves its recognition!
yeah i know they were both amazing horses, but i dont like when someone says a great horse was a cheater, and the only reason he won was because he was forced to race, and the only reason he won was because he cheated. that aint right.
you guys are numnuts if you think the admiral was the better horse, the only reason the biscuit wasnt in the money more often was because he was an outcast since he was so little as a baby. if he would of started of with trainer tom smith he would of won the triple crown before the admiral. besides biscuit had more heart, that makes him the better horse.
Remember the 2004 Derby and Jose Santos ws accused of using a "buzzer" or a battery? Electronic devise, thats what Tom says made 'biscuit run the way he did. All he needed was a jolt them voom!
bullshit, if you recall, smarty was undefeated going into the derby moron, so you say he used the buzzer the whole time. and also they didnt convict him, they dropped it immeadiately. And do some research on Tom Smith, dumbass, the biscuit wasnt the only horse he trained then. So i assume you think the movie is a bunch of bull?
yes i remember, and like i said it was immeadiatly dropped. sorry to get hot on you but i thought the acusations were on smarty, he is the superior horse to funny, but you do have a point, wat did funny do after the preakness. hey i never said the movie was 100% i just said he trained other horses other than the biscuit that were raced in grade ones. they didnt put that in the movie. C.H. also had two other sons, and they just didnt find biscuit a week later, took them a couple years.
Some things in the movie made me question why Laura liked it so much.
But I have read that TOm used hte buzzer, which was a common move back then. Weither or not Admiral used it, I'm no sure. But I am almost 100% possitive thats what made seabicuit, The Biscuit.
are you talking about the author Laura Hillenbrand? you have read it? where? And the book was pure facts. like i said before, bull. The biscuits heart was 6.2 wich is a quarter of the size bigger than the average heart. 4.4 is around the average size for a horses heart. if you are saying that why he could run, then thats like saying all the other great horses were abused too.
really? i dont recall that. they use this certain scale/machine, i forgot wat it is called, to measure a horses heart. you know that secretariat had a big heart right? well biscuit did too. wat i meant was if you are going to pick on biscuit then thats like picking on any of the other great horses.
how do they know wat? the size of his heart? yeah he did, and then buried at the farm C.H. had purchase for biscuit, they still dont know where hes buried until this day. read the book, get your facts
well now you do and i hope your opnion has slightly changed about the biscuit, it was a talented trainer, a lucky owner, and a jockey that was looking for a friend. i dont think anything was fake, how they had biscuit run i mean. that horse was one in a million, all heart, and he loved wat he did, it just took the right people to bring it out in him.
you too. i still highly recommend the book the movie is only a quarter of it, not just to learn about him but just to read a great story, quite of bit of history in it too:)

more heart? Admiral lead and won in his races, not came from the back being sheltered... do u have anything to actually do with the horse racing industry or u just like spouting information from media and movies?
being sheltered? it takes more try and horse to come from behind than be in front, it just takes more stamina to be the pace horse and win. for your 411 its not from media and movies, its from facts and reading. my mom worked at the track for 25 years so i think i know a thing to two about the industry.
Why are we numnuts if we think the admiral was better? It could never be proved. The admiral was off the day of the race. The person who set it up (can't remember his name) even said he shouldn't have set it up that day. I'm not saying the biscuit was bad, just it was never proved which was better. My opinion was that the admiral was better, but I don't get down on others who say the biscuit was.
if you say it could never be proved then what was the match race? war admiral ran the fastes mile and a half of his life and still was four lengths behind biscuit. he beat him because he looked in the eye and said " your not better than me." the admiral rqaced in two more races before retiring and he was never the same. biscuit broke his heart.
You can say that about any team that is supposed to be better - they just had a bad day...lol !! This was a big time race - head to head - and War Admiral lost !! End of story !!
thanks much for sharing this, been looking for good War Admiral videos for some time now (yet I was stupid enough not to look from YouTube).
I don't really know which one is favourite from those two great horses, Seabiscuit and War Admiral, even though I think Admiral looks better. Both are anyway very closely related to my all time favourite, Man O'War.
they just didnt make a movie about him because he wasn't such the "underdog" that Seabiscuit was
he was an underdog only when he was born a runty colt that resembled his dam more than sire. but that was the only time that you could have called him an underdog, because after that he piled up victory after victory. thus no movie was made for the great War Admiral.
The Admiral lost one race to Seabiscuit and then came back to beat the Biscuit by lenghts in another race. Seabiscuit lost the first 17 races of his career and u still say he's a champion. The Admiral lost one race to Seabiscuit and everyone thinks he's worse than him, which hes not. He just had a bad day. Seabiscuit had 56 losses in his career. 56 bad days. you cant base the greatness of a horse because of one loss...
and if he gets tired that means he is not a very good race horse seabiscuit was tired too but still did his trick what a friendship his personality aswell.they say war admiral was nasty and bit and kicked seabiscuit had a true partnership.
So, now personality tells weither or not one is better than the other? Thats just mean to all of hastings progedy.Hastings passed down hot blood, (figure of speech) Man O' War got it, and all his kids (well, most) got it as well.
Seabiscuit was said to be aweful for a few years. No one could get near him. Only Red.
Yeah, he would have won the "belmont derby triple crown" by 10 legths. Yeah, uh huh.... no horse has won the Derby by that much. EVER. And the Triple Crown is three races. The Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes.
Excellent video Carly. I am convinced that War Admiral was simply tired during the match race with Seabiscuit. I believe that on any other day he would have won the race easily. Thanks for posting this.
Healing doesn't make a horse better than another. But I do respect your decision on Biscuit being better, but its not fair to knock down Admiral because of something he A.) didn't do and B.) most likely wouldn't have done with Riddle as an owner.
When the competition came after him in the homestretch, Seabiscuit was tired, but he wouldn't give up. He lost the race by the barest nose, but when that other horse came head to head with him he burst forward with such power "it was as though he were breaking from the gate again." And I might also add that he was lugging 132 pounds, 32 more than the horse who came head to head with him. He was faster, stronger, and braver than War Admiral ever was.
And Seabiscuit faced much more adversary and trouble than War Admiral. He had the heart of a champion. In one long race, his jockey made a mistake and chased the wrong horse, spending Seabiscuit's rally much too early (and by the way, he smashed the half mile world record in the process).
War Admiral isn't the better horse. The reason Seabiscuit was failing in his early career was because he had the wrong trainer who mishandled him. You say War Admiral showed heart from an injury? Seabiscuit suffered a career ending ruptured tendon, spent a whole year at rest, and then at seven years old the horse came back into racing to win the world's richest race (at the time).
of course War Admiral is the better horse. War Admiral set records and won races Seabiscuit that couldn't. and honestly how can you compare Seabiscuit to a horse who won the Belmont with an inch long cut in his hoof? any other horse would have dropped the bit but War Admiral showed heart by running the race of his life.
has anyone ever noticed that on the blodhorse top 100 horses of the 20th century they have war admiral before seabiscuit...even tho seabiscuit beat war admiral in the match race...weird
and the better horses get to wear added weight....sometimes horrible amounts...as they did to seabisuit...par lap, etc....they sincerely tried to kill these horses back then...

we have proof that seabiscuit IS better because seabiscuit won derrrr get it in!
showjumpingbabe 4 years ago
and if he gets tired that means he is not a very good race horse seabiscuit was tired too but still did his trick what a friendship his personality aswell.they say war admiral was nasty and bit and kicked seabiscuit had a true partnership.
showjumpingbabe 4 years ago
So, now personality tells weither or not one is better than the other? Thats just mean to all of hastings progedy.Hastings passed down hot blood, (figure of speech) Man O' War got it, and all his kids (well, most) got it as well.
Seabiscuit was said to be aweful for a few years. No one could get near him. Only Red.

biscuit would of won the belmont derby triple crown any day probaly by 10 lengths barbaro was even better
showjumpingbabe 4 years ago
Yeah, he would have won the "belmont derby triple crown" by 10 legths. Yeah, uh huh.... no horse has won the Derby by that much. EVER. And the Triple Crown is three races. The Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes.

Yes, did I say otherwise? If so, I'm sorry.

Excellent video Carly. I am convinced that War Admiral was simply tired during the match race with Seabiscuit. I believe that on any other day he would have won the race easily. Thanks for posting this.
SWALE1984 4 years ago
Yup, but remember I didn't make this.
I love Admiral. I think he would have won any other day, as well.

seabiscuit was best cause war admiral wouldn't of recovered from a broken leg and even if he did he would not of been able two win a couple of races.
showjumpingbabe 4 years ago
Healing doesn't make a horse better than another. But I do respect your decision on Biscuit being better, but its not fair to knock down Admiral because of something he A.) didn't do and B.) most likely wouldn't have done with Riddle as an owner.

seabiscuit was unbeatable

When the competition came after him in the homestretch, Seabiscuit was tired, but he wouldn't give up. He lost the race by the barest nose, but when that other horse came head to head with him he burst forward with such power "it was as though he were breaking from the gate again." And I might also add that he was lugging 132 pounds, 32 more than the horse who came head to head with him. He was faster, stronger, and braver than War Admiral ever was.

Wait, I correct myself. Seabiscuit carried 130 pounds which was the most that the racing secretary was allowed to assign him for the race.

And Seabiscuit faced much more adversary and trouble than War Admiral. He had the heart of a champion. In one long race, his jockey made a mistake and chased the wrong horse, spending Seabiscuit's rally much too early (and by the way, he smashed the half mile world record in the process).
hoofbeats854 5 years ago
War Admiral isn't the better horse. The reason Seabiscuit was failing in his early career was because he had the wrong trainer who mishandled him. You say War Admiral showed heart from an injury? Seabiscuit suffered a career ending ruptured tendon, spent a whole year at rest, and then at seven years old the horse came back into racing to win the world's richest race (at the time).

Do you have any video of Kelso??? Or KyakII?? What about the amazing filly Kinscm,, those horses were old and great too, chekm' out!!!
Hollisterhorse 5 years ago
Kinscm!? HA! She raced in the 1700's!! I havn't looked for Kelso, or Kyak II...
carlykaiser 5 years ago
of course War Admiral is the better horse. War Admiral set records and won races Seabiscuit that couldn't. and honestly how can you compare Seabiscuit to a horse who won the Belmont with an inch long cut in his hoof? any other horse would have dropped the bit but War Admiral showed heart by running the race of his life.
futurejockey17 5 years ago
Yep. It's weird. But I think that War Admiral winned more races than Seabiscuit... It's not only one match race that does the better horse...
symphonia336 5 years ago
has anyone ever noticed that on the blodhorse top 100 horses of the 20th century they have war admiral before seabiscuit...even tho seabiscuit beat war admiral in the match race...weird
