The positive news is that since 2002 the wolf population has gone from 100 wolves to 1,650 in Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. According to those states fish and wildlife services at least.

I'm having to hunt squirrels on my aunt's property because they are eating all her nut crops - overpopulation. But I just cannot understand the purpose of lining up my kills and taking photos of them. Personally, I am not proud of it no matter how many I shoot. I do at least eat them so they are not wasted. The fact is that in certain areas in AK wolf numbers are way too high so in order to keep the packs healthy we thin them (like thinning weeds from your garden). I will never understand why people pick a certain species of animal to champion. I am a 20 year resident of AK. As with any game animal their populations must be managed. The people who are in charge of managing these populations have determined that there are too many wolves (in certain areas) and the heard must be thinned (using management tools) in order to keep them (wolves) healthy. For you uneducated people who have never been here why don't you show a video of a live calf moose being evicerated and dismembered by a pack of wolves while it's mother watches?

I don't doubt there are cheap solutions. The main reason I hunt them is for sport and their pelt. I wouldn't hunt wolves where the population is sturggling, it's not like I'm on a mission to wipe them out. Not even remotely the same. You have to stalk the animal, that takes skill. Unlike flying over one and shooting it. Animals do have to do anything to get hunted. We either hunt and use the meat and leave the organs we don't want out so other animals can feed off of it, or we trophy hunt or use the animals fur.
Do polar bears or Grizzles have natural predictors? No, have to keep the population down. With animals such as deer and fox or coyotes they can still over populate with natural predictors.
If you have to many coyotes, the deer fawns aren't going to survive. That is why you can also hunt doe's, to keep down population even tho they have natural predictors but with the expansion of city's and towns more & more encounters with wildlife and humans and if there is to many of a animal such as say deer they are going to destroy their food supply and ecosystem which just effects the other animals. If you have a bunch of deer dieing the wolves will get the mind set they wont have to hunt.
And if you have the wolves not hunting or forgetting the basics of hunting and they will optimally die from starvation and the animals that they once feed on are now going to over populate and so on.
if anything is getting overpopulated, its our fault. we screwed something up, and instead of slaughtering innocent animals, we should just set things back to the way there were before we messed them up. yeah, it might be slightly more inconvenient for us, but hey, they were here first.

I'm having to hunt squirrels on my aunt's property because they are eating all her nut crops - overpopulation. But I just cannot understand the purpose of lining up my kills and taking photos of them. Personally, I am not proud of it no matter how many I shoot. I do at least eat them so they are not wasted. I don't understand killing for the fun of killing.

Responsible people don't kill for fun...personally, I kill for food to feed myself and my family. You're generalizing and misinformed if you think all wolves are killed "just for fun". I'm sure there are a small percentage that are killed just for fun but that's not the rule. In alaska they are killed because their numbers are way too high in certain areas. If you've got a problem with people killing for fun you should focus your attention on the low life poachers not the responsible people.

Ya'll are basing your position regarding wolves on emotion. The fact is that in certain areas in AK wolf numbers are way too high so in order to keep the packs healthy we thin them (like thinning weeds from your garden). Other areas are closed to wolf hunting because the numbers are just right or a bit low. Canid's are slaughtered every day across the country at your local animal shelter, shouldn't that stop as well? Spay and neuter is the management tool to help stem that. Our tool is thinning.

I will never understand why people pick a certain species of animal to champion. What makes the heavily regulated killing of wolves worse than the daily slaughter of Beef, Sheep, Chickens, Turkeys, Pigs...etc. If you're going to spend your resources condemming the killing of wolves it only makes sense to condem the killing of ALL animals. I am a 20 year resident of AK. As with any game animal their populations must be managed. The people who are in charge of managing these populations have determined that there are too many wolves (in certain areas) and the heard must be thinned (using management tools) in order to keep them (wolves) healthy. For you uneducated people who have never been here why don't you show a video of a live calf moose being evicerated and dismembered by a pack of wolves while it's mother watches?

Nature used to be able to regulate itself before mankind showed up on this planet.
A wolf bitch can put out 5-7 pups a year and it doesn't take many months till these pups turn into killing machines. A moose or caribou puts out 1-2 calf's a year and it takes over a year till they're self sufficient. It's easy to see that wolves can (and do) decimate the populations of other animals in an area. They then move on and repeat. In Alaska we thin wolf numbers...we don't eliminate all of them.

You're an idiot. Wolves are not going extinct, there are more now than there have been in years. The cull of a few hundred wolves is needed to keep a few THOUSAND ungulates alive every year. Oh and they arn't so cute and loving when you go outside to feed your horses in the morning and you find your foal stripped to the bone in the woods. I'll be hunting wolves and yotes on Wednesday, and almost every free day I have over the holidays. They are as thick as thieves here (Alberta).

I don't doubt there are cheap solutions. The main reason I hunt them is for sport and their pelt. I wouldn't hunt wolves where the population is sturggling, it's not like I'm on a mission to wipe them out. Your going to have to elaborate to what I said. Before you say anything to that why don't you criticize the supermarkets that get hundreds of pounds of beef and chicken and turkey and pork. And they throw out all of the meat that they don't use they don't even give it to the homeless. What did those animals do? They were killed for nothing, none of them used. Were as the majority of hunters use what they kill for food hides, or trophy.

Few other things. '' war loving'' apparently you never heard the saying ' no one wants peace more than the soldier' You need ppl like me for war. You need to face the facts theres never going to be a little world where we hold hands and all get along. And for your information hunting organizations buy and persevere land so they cant be build on. If a developer buys that land and builds guess what happens there wont be ANY wolves.

You right I'm not but going to be. Meeting with a recruiter next month. And I can tell you are just a know it all "unit" lol please tell me if you have ever seen a unit on patrol? That would be 75-200 soldiers out in the streets at once. How am I a tool and why do you think a firearm gives me strength? And I'm not just talking about wolves, they buy land all over the country. Thats where you are wrong. I never said I ' supports killing animals out of a fuckin plane'. There wont be wolves or any wild animals if hunting organizations dont buy the land, hills or not the developers cut the trees and level the land, build roads. Tell me why does the ' insurgents' not wear military uniform and fight in ppls houses? Yea. Get your facts right and stop putting words in my mouth because you have no ground to stand on.

No thats not what Im implying. Hunting and then hunting from a plain 2 different things. We dont own the world to hunter but all you and others see or know is killing animals you dont see or bother looking and see that they actually help the wild life. Yea your right its guerrilla warfare they shoot and scout they blow each other up but we drop a bomb on a family and its the us military is the bad guys. The insurgents are nothing but poor ass pussy's.

Not even remotely the same. You have to stalk the animal, that takes skill. Unlike flying over one and shooting it. Animals do have to do anything to get hunted. We either hunt and use the meat and leave the organs we don't want out so other animals can feed off of it, or we trophy hunt or use the animals fur.

Do polar bears or Grizzles have natural predictors? No, have to keep the population down. With animals such as deer and fox or coyotes they can still over populate with natural predictors.

If you have to many coyotes, the deer fawns aren't going to survive. That is why you can also hunt doe's, to keep down population even tho they have natural predictors but with the expansion of city's and towns more & more encounters with wildlife and humans and if there is to many of a animal such as say deer they are going to destroy their food supply and ecosystem which just effects the other animals. If you have a bunch of deer dieing the wolves will get the mind set they wont have to hunt.

And if you have the wolves not hunting or forgetting the basics of hunting and they will optimally die from starvation and the animals that they once feed on are now going to over populate and so on.

if anything is getting overpopulated, its our fault. we screwed something up, and instead of slaughtering innocent animals, we should just set things back to the way there were before we messed them up. yeah, it might be slightly more inconvenient for us, but hey, they were here first.

Its does tho. If a large number of people start to make a ruckus about it, law makes what to get into office and people start sending petitions and before you know it there are hard regulations on hunting, tighter regulations on what caliber of round I can use, smaller amount of what game I can harvest, snorter time of when I can harvest.
