  • this song is actually an in joke between nick mason and roger waters, they were fishing on lake superior in northern wisconsin in 57 when mason had to go to the bathroom, waters asked him where he planned on going so far out from shore, mason's reply "point me at the sky and let it fly"

  • @jhoch5 Roger and Nick didn't meet until they went to college together in 1962, and Roger didn't even speak to Nick until a few months after they started.

  • Just too great. Best band

  • typical early floyd and still very good

  • if you servive to 2005? tgats great

  • So, this is pretty much Ruby in the Sky With Diamonds re-written, right?

  • @Danimal77 you mean Lucy??...

  • @TomsCigReviews

    Yeah...haha...I meant Lucy.

  • @Danimal77 It's nothing like "Lucy" In The Sky With Diamonds! Just because both songs happen to have the word "Sky" in the title and go more upbeat during the chorus, but that's it really.

  • @xPORTERLOOx

Uhhhhhh. yes.....yes it is. Your deaf.

  • @Danimal77 You call me deaf! This song sounds nothing like Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, I am familiar with both songs, The Beatles and Pink Floyd are my two favourite bands and the song sounds completely different

  • @xPORTERLOOx Let me just tell you that I too agree that this and "Lucy in The Sky" are a little alike. When you're listening to Lucy, in the part "lucy in the sky", add "and let it fly" (i.e "lucy in the sky and let it fly"!) and tell me if it does or does not fit in. I think it does. Floyd is my favourite band, too, and that's what I think :)

  • Maldita sea!!

    Esto es música carajo!

Los buenos y verdaderos clásicos nunca mueren!

    :'D

  • Just fucking too good

  • He's saying Jean because he's singing to a girl

  • one of my theme songs...lite the fuse and POINT ME AT THE FREAKIN' SKY yeah baby !!

  • my favourite song of Pink Floyd

  • i like this song a lot, its one of roger waters least favorites

  • glad i found this

  • unapreciated single, rocks man!

  • @barriesonfire

Let me know when you are capable of producing something better. Nobber.

  • @barriesonfire Don't worry. Roger Waters even said this song was crap.

  • Hello there music appreciator.

-Do bluesy bands likes Zeppelin, Floyd, Joplin, Doors, Hendrix, and The Who give you chills? Are you physically attracted to seeking truth in music? Well I am formally inviting you to take a listen to my channel, Using your open mind take the time to hear my tunes.. your subscribtion to my channel will help me show the world my music. Much Love.

  • how many of us floydies have survived till 2005 and beyond?and if you have i doubt that that you are exceedingly thin! that includes Dave too!

  • One of the best songs.

  • My favourite Floyd era really, in a broad sense that is ; 1968 to 1972 (including Dark Side Of The Moon)

  • @TheKenfig I include the Syd´s era too, but agree with ending of it at Dark Side (1973)

  • @MichalFokt Indeed I do too ; I love the Syd era, although it is quite different to this era because of the uniqueness of Syd and his dominance of the material for that short time.

  • Who is this 1 dislike?? Ima get them!!!!

  • Absolutely great song! The Floyd is pure artistry in lyrics and music. The Pink Floyd sound will definitely be remembered for a long time. You can't really say that about things such as lady gag gag or justin whoever

  • Oh my gosh! Musicians who actually know how play their instruments and lyrics that are thought provoking and intelligent! Let your average gen xr listen to this and their brains will explode!

  • my friend Sam had this when I was 14 on 7" and it reminds me of her and then..wonder where she is now?

  • Strangers passing on the street, and by chance two glances meet, and I am you and what I see is me. And do I take you by the hand , and lead you through the ,and help me understand the best I can. Their lyrics are so real, in a highly observant, stream of conciousness kind of way. Anyone Can understand, but those who write music, we all wish we could see things so somply, and clearly!

  • this song has a power !!

  • Syd died in 2005.

  • @atomikhound No, He died in 2006

  • @Krakkhaus he survived till two thousand and five :)

  • @pigsontherun yes, I know, Your point is?

  • weird that there's a girl called eugene

  • @trickchack

This is th efrist time I've heard this song, I love it. But I head "Hey Jean" not Eugene. I don't know what it is though since it's the only time I've heard it, but I'll listen a lot more as this song is really good.

  • @anussyni yes, it is

  • @trickchack gene

  • i love this song so much

  • They use the word Baby like you use Man..Think o Austin Powers.

  • They use the word "Baby" like you would use "Man"...Think o Austin Powers.

  • Ce morceau sonne étrangement comme Lucy In The Sky des amis B.

  • There's so much Floyd i still need to learn.. Goddam theyre fucking awesome.

  • Hell yeah, I got this on a bootleg DVD, this is what I was looking for. Thanks.

  • I was'nt expecting a result when I typed this in! 5/5

  • Why would it be "Hey Eugene" and not "Hey Jean" since a few lines later he asks: "you'd like to fly with me and hide with me baby". I'd think "baby" would mean it's a female.

  • if you survive until 2005....wow

  • Isn't funny that the first verse of this song is ''Hey Eugene'' and the B-side of this single is ''Careful with that axe, Eugene''? Sorry for my awful English, I'm Italian =)

  • Pretty sure it's saying Eugene, may be a reference to the B side. And just because he says "baby" doesn't mean it's a girl or he's gay, it could just be a friend thing.

Pink Floyd's early stuff was the best but I don't like Piper that much

  • This is another one missing from the Relics that should have been. WTF, record companies?

  • Comment removed

  • did no one notice, that the fellow who posted this spelt goodbye wrong every time...

  • 2:11 - 2:20 is beautiful! Too short, though.

  • Comment removed

  • Hey!! Isn't this the late Rick Wright singing this ditty? And who the hell wrote THIS, anyway?!

  • This is an awesome rare track from the floyd, where could I get this track? I want to buy it for my mp3!

  • The more insane Syd got the more music he should have recorded. That's the way to do it.

  • Actually what happened with Eugene is that he was the family woodcutter for Roger Waters. Eugene decided that woodcutting just wasn't "cuttin' it" for him so he went off study medicine. So, he packed his bags, including his axe, and went off to Medical School and soon invented a type of surgery that involves just an axe and a bottle of whiskey. It was all very relavant and useful for the time! In fact I remember when I had surgery performed on me with an axe.

  • Well, most of them made it to 2005

  • @AntonioSaucedo22 Actually, they all did

  • I thought this was released in 1969?

  • This song is a gem............a top ten in my modern day collection. IT's great fun to fall in love with songs sung long ago that surface for some grand reason.

  • It is a shame syd went insane, his solo career could have surpassed Pink Floyd's in terms of epicness.

    Oh well.

  • Point at sky!!

  • Point at sky

  • I like this alot but I do think Julia Dream and Paint Box are better....as well as remember a day. I think Rick was better at writing the "Barrett" style stuff than Roger.

  • pink floyd said that this was their most embarrasing moment

    i love this song

  • Respond to this video... not to piss anyone off,but on this song david actually played on a rare (now) esquire,(not to be confused with squire) telecaster.a bit later he changed to a strat.(the white one that bares the serial # 00001)

  • @crazydiamond313 esquire is not a telecaster, just looks like one.

  • the best line, they actually DID survive to 2005, their last gig at Live 8

  • @embeleshow But were any of them exceedingly thin?

  • @embeleshow

    and now 2011 !!

  • Absolutely love 0:51-01:01

  • Cool song by one of the greatest bands of all time. I can imagine what that girl would look like after five years!

  • I really like the line, "And if you survive till two thousand and five." Just thought that was cool because Pink Floyd reunited for Live 8 in 2005.

  • Roger and David (maybe Rick too) are really good singing on this awesome tune

  • The WWI imagery fits this song perfectly.

I like the clever and snakey chorus. It's a work of genius. And you can really tell Dave played a Stratocaster.

  • Sky pilot as well.

  • you know something...i think it is Jean....i never considered it.....but it would make more sense is it was Jean or else the song would be kinda gayish....espcially that line "im leaving and maybe you'd like to fly with me and hide with me baby"....not that im hateing on gay people or anything....be it Jean or Eugene its a damn good song!

  • If you A-B this with Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds some interesting song structure similarities come into view.

  • Yes, very Beatle-esque - good tune though.

  • is this song with Syd or without him?

  • It's got Syd's musical style written all over it, but that's definitely Roger singing the chorus.

  • Pink floyd will always ahead of our time

  • im not really a fan of british bands bu this song is my favorite by pink floyd its a shame this is not on record

  • They knew how to make magic with music.

  • The chorus sounds like a cross of Pink Floyd and The Move.

  • hey, i survived 2005.

    awkward

  • barrett too, and he left a year later

  • i knew a cat named pringles once

  • the bass player in my band totally plagerized this song as his own and we recorded it. i had no idea about this song until someone burned me pink floyd's entire discography and i heard this. i just about shit myself

  • LOL DAAAMN

  • LMAO what a fag... Apparently you guys could of been famous with that song. Nobody caught that? Did your band suck? How about uploading that there recording... :)

  • @axischild70 so you ripped off PF by recording the whole discography and the bass player ripped off PF, too...jk, just being a turd. seriously though, isn't it cool that this music still is great over 30 years later? It'll still be appreciated many generations later..

  • in the first line it is spoken "hey there jean/eugene this is henry mcclean". it could be eugene because on the other side of the original 45 was the song Careful with that Axe, Eugene. but it could also be jean because then henry mcclean would be gay because it sounds like the person that henry is talking to is his lover

  • floyd+beatles= wows!

  • Isn't it sad we're insane?

  • Actually, it's quite lovely.

  • @PlanTonto

    ;)

  • @psychonautpsychosis it's more sad that people believe you can 'suffer' from insanity...i quite enjoy it. everyone is insane! why do most choose to suffer?

  • its jean

  • I think this is a great song by Pink Floyd, but I dont think the Pink Floyd members themself liked it very much... poorly

  • holy shit this is trippy

  • Hey Gene, this is Henry McClean...

one of my favourite old Floyd tracks.

  • It's not Syd, but it's damn good, regardless, beautiful.

  • ^This.

  • one of the first band to ever freak out??

  • lucy in the sky with diamonds

  • that would defintly be the beatles

  • eugene. it couldn't be jean because jean is actually pronounced 'john' because it is a french name!

  • English female name Jean, not French male Jean. Which, by the way, is not pronounced "John".

  • eugene!

  • I'd say it's Eugene. But, where is Roger?

  • Ironically, all of them lived until 2005. Later came the casualties: Syd and Rick.

Now we're pointig 'em in heaven.

  • I love this song.

  • sound like a beatles song i think.

  • When Gilmour joined Floyd, at first they consciously set out to write 'Syd style' quirky pop tunes but realised it just wasn't happening, and started to concentrate on the more 'space rock' sound like Set The Controls and Interstellar Overdrive. Personally I think this is a pretty cool, judged on its own merits.

  • definitely. the quiet verses in 6/8 time and the heavy 4/4 choruses remind me of lucy in the sky with diamonds, which came out one year before. i know waters considers it a failure, and i think the rest of the band don't like much of their music during this time period, but it's not bad for a forced effort.

  • Nice. You've got the lyrics at the end.

  • I like this song. It's really pretty.

  • "and if you survive till 2005 i hope you are exceedingly thin" that always reminds me of syd...

  • Rickkkkkkkkkkkkkkk por q te fuiste! Gracias por tu música una vez más!

  • i love how this song is totally based off the tempo and arrangement of lucy in the sky with diamonds. pink floyd=the best

  • It's rather Jean (a girl), because he's saying "my baby". I don't think he'd refer to a man like that.

But on the other hand, the song was a released as a single with "Careful with that axe, Eugene" as its B-side, so...

  • How can people not like this? I totally love it!

  • @BiggestE

There are 0 disslikers by a reason .

  • @BiggestE well still 2 years later no dislikes. KNOW ONE HATES PINK FLOYD

  • Maybe they don't like it because it was their first single from the post-Syd era and it flopped completely on the charts. After this, they haven't released a single in the U.K. until 1979 and "ABITW pt.2". So I'm not really surprised that they have no pleasant memories with this song...

They also say that they don't like the "Ummagumma" or "Atom Heart Mother" stuff that much, so I wouldn't really bother with that...

  • i like the song and Atom. But they did not. Shame as Atom was nice and reflective. IF and SUMMER 68 being classics.

  • thought it was julia dream/it would be so nice

  • "It Would Be So Nice"/"Julia Dream" was recorded in January 1968 and released in March 1968. Syd left the band in March. "A Saucerful of Secrets" was then released, in June.

"Point Me At The Sky" was recorded in November and released in December 1969, so yes, it was the first post-Syd Barret-era single. It flopped and they never released a follow up until 1979.

  • Sorry, December 1968 of course.

  • We're splitting hairs. The last single Syd played on was " Apples and Oranges/Paintbox".

  • To be absolutely precise, he played his last guitar part on "A&O", but he sang some backing vocals on "IWBSN". He was still a member of the band when the single was recorded and released.

"PMATS" was recorded over half a year after Syd's departure. It was a beggining to a new chapter of their career.

  • cheers

  • he wrote and performed "jugband blues" and performed guitar for "remember a day". after he the infamous "you got it yet", band new it just wouldn't work.

  • Thers a question mark on Syd being on Corporal Clegg aswell!

  • I was on two plane flights over the weekend, and you have NO IDEA how great a flying song this is!

(Ironically, all of the Floyd were afraid of flying. Ouch.)

And that bass--it's odd isn't it, really great.

This song is pitifully overlooked when it comes to these guys, and it's really a great one.

  • Dave is an avid flyer, while nick is a huge car guy, and rick is a huge boat guy. Dave talks about his flying all the time. Learning to Fly was his only musical reference (though this one maybe is too). He mainly mentions it in interviews, and its in Nick's book.

By the way Nick is the one that was notriously afraid of planes, he says in his book that Dave has helped him to get over it with plane lessons. (Hopefully I don't misinform with top-of-my-head info)

  • Oh, well of course--I've read Nick's book through and through, but I didn't get that (I'm young and pretty thick at times).

But apparently, they were all originally deathly afraid of flying in the early days, and there was one particular flight over some mountains... the Himalayas comes to mind, but I doubt that my mind is telling the truth there; anyways, there was a horrible storm, and this made it worse. So they were afraid for awhile.

But I think that yeah, that sounds about right!

  • same to me!!!

Always i list this song during the fly!

  • BEST TUNE FOR THAT.

Flew to Nashville, and I'm flying to Connecticut and some other places this summer--and this is the only thing I can listen to during takeoff and landing. Flying's fantastic, and Gilmour's breathy-then-shouting vocals perfect it!

  • It's not Eugene, it's Jean.

  • I know this is kind of a stupid question, but are they implying the guy in the song is gay? Hey eugene...Come fly with me baby

  • Perhaps. PF seemed to have an issue with 'Eugene' as shown in 'Careful with that axe Eugene'.

I have read somewhere that Eugene was a journalist or disc jockey. But do not remember the source, so cannot confirm it.

  • On the other hand I have always connected this song with the hippie film 'Zabriskie Point'.

  • isnt this song on that soundtrack?

  • @admcanaris Careful with that axe Eugene was named after Jerry Garcia's brother, Eugene. Eugene cut off part of his brothers finger with an axe when they where children.

  • @badangadang Thats an old myth man.

  • Mabey Eugene was a guy who Roger Waters used to know in high school, and who used to be mean to him, so now he's getting back at him this way.

  • Mabey Eugene was a guy who Roger Waters used to know in high school, and who used to be mean to him, so now he's getting back at him this way.

  • why can't it be a girl named Jean? That's what I always hear

  • It is Jean. Eugene is from the B-track, 'Careful with that axe Eugene'

  • lmao i think they are sayin Jean not Eugene. look it up on wikipedia and ull see.

  • Eugene is also a name for a girl, in our country (czech republic) it is " Eugenie "

  • @captainjackass325 nonnononono. none of pink floyd are gay.

Bob Klose might've been, but idk much about him but he left three years before this song came out.....

  • @captainjackass325 So no. They didn't put stupid messages in songs back then.

  • This song is amazing.

  • Set them controls for the heart of the sun, baby!

  • The soundtrack is from the 9 CD box set 'Shine On´.

  • can you buy this on an album/cd?
