@angelambryant wats lime limestone n if it is all id need to do is get limestone n sand n mudd or clay to get em stuck together n let it harden n i could make my own fortress
@angelambryant Very accurate statement. But you should also know that many brands of modern 'Masonry cement' leave out the lime and replace it with microscopic air bubbles to give the mortar the properties that lime traditionally provided. Some of these masonry cements keep their 'workability' properties longer than traditional lime mortar, but some will argue that the air bubble (masonry cement) does not bind and hold the bricks, stone, whatever as well and thoroughly as traditional mortr

@bonerears it depends on what time period you're talking about. Also the geographic location of the people who were building. THe Egyptians built not just fortresses but the pyramids we still see today with sand, mud and straw along with water, others used stone, cement was invented by the romans a VERY long time ago, some fortresses were made of wood, some even used dung (poop) as part of their mix. Also loose dirt and stone like the scots.
@crazystoneworker "the wall has 6'' inch thick footing w/ a width 4'' inches wider than the wall on both sides, at the back side ,at the base of footing a 4 ''inch drain tile is layed and drain rock covers it to the top of footing than ground cloth,to keep dirt out than back filled to desired leavel. Cheers ds Stoneman"
@angelambryant can you describe this better to me.. i can't really visualize how that drain is laid in. This is to prevent water from twisting the fence right?
not a bad wall..in austalia we prefer to use flat faces rocks, the rocks u use would probably be hard to split. I spose there is all different sorts of walls and the one you have chosen suits the location, kinda looks a bit ancient tho..im a stone mason, i absolutely love using sandstone, i have used similar round rocks before however in my opinion those rocks only look good dry stacked for a cheapy if u ever get the chance jump on the net n have a look at some one the work we do in aus
Common guys he's not building the "Great Wall of China". It's different style of wall which makes it unique. A great stone mason is the one who put his heart and passion into his work. He could say come to American so you can learn how to build a classic skyscraper like the Empire State Building made of Indiana lime stone. Let Scotland be Scotland. Great job Dave
we build rockwalls down here in texas and newmexico, they sure work different 4rm our method of building a rock wall, but then again, there are manny ways of building a rockwall, nice work mate.
those stones look crappy to build.i noticed that in the us they use roundish stones.we have good flat stones here and higher quality building hes a bit messy though..im going there to live soon and i cant wait to get my trowel into action and learn their way...hes doing a lot of bullshitting too to the beagle talking to him..mus thave some irish blood ehh lol
elementary level masonry, tight joints but needs wall ties with concrete block for a stone venear.mortared masonry done right has its place as does drystacking. You u.k. guys are right standards are higher over there as a whole but the real guys over here aren't giving away our techniques on you tube
I think it looks great and the facing stone is probably local field stone from the San Juan Islands.. you all may not understand that as you are on the other/wrong side of the pond.
fucking whatever makes u happer sir but if u ever realy want to learn to do it for real come to scotland and u can labour for me.u would gain alot more from it.this is just sticking stones to some breez blocks mate.
im a scottish stonemason, yanks are unreal,if this guy had to build a real wall he would be lost, i bet stonework is his 2nd career, facing a block or concrete wall is easy, what about drystone and traditional methods, lime morter etc, thats art.
It's a shame skills like this is just given a way too non tax paying americans we will lose all important skills soon and realy be depentant on labors who ship the money over the border. a burden on all us hard working TAX PAYING Americans please all you business owners think of this when who hire p.s don't care if there mexicans or whatever just contribute like the rest of us thanks!
well im impressed, but then im a mere bricklayer, the geezers got a great eye, each stone he chose looked like it grew there when put in place, hes also right to keep the work level when stepping down the slope, it just doesnt look right when the work follows the contour of the land
lads lads lads!!! he`s not doing a bad job with wat he has got but if any of my lads done work that bad id fire them without pay, simple becoz we would have to tear it down and start again..got a stone co. here in ireland ill post some vids of our work soon! macdiesiel im with ya man! lol
We hired Dave, a master stonemason, who had laid stone and built walls and steps for us before. What really counts is that we love the wall and consider it a work of fine art, built to last more than a lifetime.
1st his mortor is to loose. And I don't like using block. But everbody has there own style. And you know what they say you can't have 2 stone masons on the same wall. And don't hire illegal Mexicans. And we only smoke the greenist
i can't see anything wrong with his technique. he's got block, his lines set, what he's finished looks good. i'm not saying you're wrong, but if there is a problem with his technique, plz let me know. thanks.
this guy makes me smile! check out my vid of my stonework in ireland
