them our appreciation for the excellent job they do and their commitment for providing our families with not only nutrient rich dairy products, but also, as you pointed out, a meat product we can also feel safe feeding our families.

would treat the animal with the utmost respect and kindness if they would like to get a turn around on their investment. Slaughter houses who are unsuccessful at this end up on youtube and HSUS and PETA get involved and they get shut down, so it is my belief that when my animals have to leave my farm they are going to a place that is going to respect them just as much as I did.
So, let's not take away from the amazing job the farmers on this video do caring for their animals and instead show
Further, slaughter houses aren't going anywhere, regardless of how you feel about them. More than 80% of Americans alone consume meat, and less than 50% of the beef consumed comes from dairy animals. Sending our cows to a slaughter house is the last thing on a dairy farmers mind, we want to keep our animals as long as we can, which is why we go above and beyond to keep them healthy and happy. When an animal does go for slaughter, it is purchased from the farm, and logic says the purchaser.....
Cows milk is for calves, however, fortunately for us humans, it also provides us with essential vitamins and nutrients. As a dairy farmer myself, I do not know a single dairy farmer who does not give a calf their mothers first milk, colostrum within hours of birth. We know it is a vital part of a calfs success. There are also some dairy farms who feed their calves whole milk from their own cows. It is a matter of choice and resources, much like a breastfed baby.
We make sure our calves receive at least two quarts of colostrum (first milk from mom) within a few hours of birth. This gives them a great start to life as colostrum is packed with antibodies that help the calf fight off illnesses. A new calf is bedded in its own little home, and we have these placed in a prominent place in our farm yard where we walk by them many times each day. Calves represent a good start to a successful future on our 150 year old family dairy farm.
There are no "plant based milks", only water with plant material added then fortified to try and immitate the great nutritional package that we can obtain naturally from dairy cows. Farmers work hard to care for their calves and do provide them with their "own" mothers colostrum and are fed real cows milk or a milk replacer similar to a baby formula we would feed human children. That info was all in the video and explained by farmers and veterinarian Dr. Edwards.
That's why I'd rather call them drinks rather than milk. It's called "milk" to let people know that there are alternatives to cow milk. Nothing wrong with fortifying a drink though. Regardless, the best source of calcium (which is the main mineral people want from cow milk) is from plants itself like broccoli.
How well are these cows treated when they reach the slaughterhouses? What about their babies who never get to drink their OWN mother's milk? Human adults don't need to remain UNWEANED. There are plenty of nourishing and delicious plant based milks. Cow's milk is for calves...
