  • That is so inspiring. That's how you do an abstract painting. The canvas he did in this clip could have gone right into a museum. It was perfect. Reminded me of a Reubens.

  • It's a great clip!! We watched it at art-lessons today... It was is a very strange man with very strange art, but in a way very beautiful as well... And HEY, He's dutch... That makes him even better :D I'm Dutch as well!! xx

  • his a great artist, i wish i can see him painting live and this painting is superb, it worth millions of dollars.....

  • Ya I painted like that when I was five , and my mom and dad got mad about it.

  • Did he use oil paint? It would take forever to dry O:

  • hahah having tea at the end is great!

  • To all those who think this is not art... Why do you care? If you don't like it, or think it's crap, just watch something else. There are plenty of remedial level videos you can view on youtube.

  • Hij zou er eigenlijk op moet schijten; dan is het pas echt kunst! Zo, gewoon voorover buigen en een lange stroom diarree eroverheen spuiten; niemand zou het verschil zien, wel ruiken.

  • THIS is the film that inspired me to paint! "I do not paint, I HIT!". Thank You, Karel Appel!

  • great.

    ANDREA SANA punto com

  • epiphany, ecstasy ... like great sex

  • Now that... was fantastic. Do you know at all, what kind of paint he is using, what makes it so thick, pasty and stays in place from dripping down, blending too freely and keeping its place?

  • @jakehaspaint

He used his own feces to thinken his paint, he first used alcohol to kill all the bacteria so that it didnt stink.

  • If only paint and art supplies were free, I think we'd all be so uninhibited like him.

  • @gonnabhuge

No, most people don't care about paint, or about you.

  • @croscream what a moron...use ur head next time before u post.

  • @paintedblaack

Why am i a moron? Because i am not a leftist like yourself? He, i know something: I decide what faith is right, not you!

  • unspeakable, of course!

  • a conductor of energy

  • I didn't know that Stalin painted!!

  • @carnisero43

Yes he did, they still show some of his painting in the national museum in sint petersburg; but this isn't Stalin.

  • But really shouldnt you use safety gogles?...Im just saying.

  • This is shit and madness in the purest form, but i like it...

  • que proceso tan mamilas

  • I love all the cobra artist, but Karel is one of my favorites. I really like his early figurative stuff, with goofy characters and strange creatures. There's one called Hip Hip Hooray that really captures the playful spirit of his painting. (I think that's what it's called. It always puts a smile on my face when I see that painting.)

  • @daveco1270

His earlier naturalist period with the nudes and the walking dogs is also really good, try looking for ''een kunstenaar zonder hersens''

  • cool

  • why is he called the cobra painter?

  • geweldig

  • geweldig

  • true violent, not painting, are stress artist

  • I'm watching this for a test I have tomorrow and i think it's such a cool way to make a painting, such a different way. I would love to try doing that sometime, put all your agression out there haha

  • @oohmygucci

Yes, Karel Appel is at the same level as gansta rap and death metal.

  • Not Asger Jorn, of course, but a not so bad artist!

  • Demaciado fuerte pa mente vacias!!ª

  • great work,,great artist..it takes lots of experience to create such strong abstract painting.

  • Anyone who can't see the difference between this and a "painting" by Paul McCartney needs a lot more than an art appreciation course.

  • @rosmia2

Yes, a trip to the gulags.

  • spettacolare... combatteva come se fosse stato in battaglia...

  • "Hèhè, dat meesterwerk zit er ook weer op."

  • hahaha, hij zweet ervan.. :P

  • Impresionante. Me gusto.

  • One of my favorite clips in paiting, surely a great master at work.

  • noice film hehe.

  • Ha HA HA ...a joke surely

  • My friend, If you think this is a "joke", you know nothing about art or abstract painting.

  • What a beautiful beautiful painting.

  • Seriously though. A great artist!. A strange mixture of Pollock, de Kooning, Riopelle, and a few others. Oh the luxury of using all that paint! Still, it takes radical measures to create radical results.

  • @proust2020

No Rembrandt, Tadema or Thielen in there!

  • @proust2020 this guy is a con and she seek mental help....

  • One of the Three Musketeers?

  • The music is composed by Dizzie Gillespie. I've just cheked it in the Essl Museum where the video is displayed)

  • I am very curious about this, but I could not find the video at Essl. Can you post the link?

  • Actually I saw it at the Cobra exhibition in the museum.. I haven't found it on the Internet so far :(

  • At the end, I thought he was going to crack open a beer. Pretty funny with his nice little tea set.

  • I believe the music was composed by him, in collaboration with the Instituut Voor Sonologie in the 60s.

  • thank you for posting

  • Pretty intense...

  • did you feel this video would become more artsy with the music in it?

Personally I think it became (more so) a joke to watch it because of it

  • RIP karel appel

  • From 3:42 you can see a couple of paintings, all the same size, packed in the background. The painting in front is quite similar to the one he is making in this clip. What Appel is trying to do is not to make just another painting, he is trying to get it right.

  • Great energy with an artit's heart, but the work says says nothing more than that. Wish I had all that his studio space then perhaps my work could say nothing, too. :)

  • What a dork!

  • Pretty crappy painting. Only part I liked was when he paused for the cup of coffee.

  • Interesting video. A little scary there after awhile, but then the cities we live in are a bit scary in themselves so this kind of art can be good theraypy. Unless of course you drag the attitude into your every day dealings with people. The vid gives me ideas of how to art therapy workshops with angry kids. Thanks, and peace.

  • ooooooooooooh that was so fucking stupid! morons!

  • THATS ACTION PAINTING JAJAJAJA

  • just great

  • FANTASTIC! These videos of Appel in action are PRICELESS!!! THANK YOU for posting these!!!!!!

  • It`s awesome, I love Appel: tremendous energy

  • wonderful video, thanks:)

  • I don´t like this video too mucho, it appears his image more than the product.

  • For pity's sake. It's the emperor's new clothes.

  • Absolutely fantastic! From start to finish, one of the very best videos I've seen. Love your work and love the energy you pour into your work. I hope to see many more!!

  • WOW. THANKS. Great video, along with great music that just fits the action of what Appel was doing.

  • prutser, je bent zelf een prutser....

  • My favorite painting film of all time, thanks for posting. It would be great if you could post it in it's entirety.

  • I have postet the full version of the video. It should be ready on youtube soon. "Karel appel full"

  • prutser, maar slimme zakenman.

    broddler, but smart businessman.

    the music sucks too
