That is so inspiring. That's how you do an abstract painting. The canvas he did in this clip could have gone right into a museum. It was perfect. Reminded me of a Reubens.
It's a great clip!! We watched it at art-lessons today... It was is a very strange man with very strange art, but in a way very beautiful as well... And HEY, He's dutch... That makes him even better :D I'm Dutch as well!! xx
To all those who think this is not art... Why do you care? If you don't like it, or think it's crap, just watch something else. There are plenty of remedial level videos you can view on youtube.
Hij zou er eigenlijk op moet schijten; dan is het pas echt kunst! Zo, gewoon voorover buigen en een lange stroom diarree eroverheen spuiten; niemand zou het verschil zien, wel ruiken.
Now that... was fantastic. Do you know at all, what kind of paint he is using, what makes it so thick, pasty and stays in place from dripping down, blending too freely and keeping its place?
I love all the cobra artist, but Karel is one of my favorites. I really like his early figurative stuff, with goofy characters and strange creatures. There's one called Hip Hip Hooray that really captures the playful spirit of his painting. (I think that's what it's called. It always puts a smile on my face when I see that painting.)
I'm watching this for a test I have tomorrow and i think it's such a cool way to make a painting, such a different way. I would love to try doing that sometime, put all your agression out there haha
Seriously though. A great artist!. A strange mixture of Pollock, de Kooning, Riopelle, and a few others. Oh the luxury of using all that paint! Still, it takes radical measures to create radical results.
From 3:42 you can see a couple of paintings, all the same size, packed in the background. The painting in front is quite similar to the one he is making in this clip. What Appel is trying to do is not to make just another painting, he is trying to get it right.
Great energy with an artit's heart, but the work says says nothing more than that. Wish I had all that his studio space then perhaps my work could say nothing, too. :)
Interesting video. A little scary there after awhile, but then the cities we live in are a bit scary in themselves so this kind of art can be good theraypy. Unless of course you drag the attitude into your every day dealings with people. The vid gives me ideas of how to art therapy workshops with angry kids. Thanks, and peace.
Absolutely fantastic! From start to finish, one of the very best videos I've seen. Love your work and love the energy you pour into your work. I hope to see many more!!

He used his own feces to thinken his paint, he first used alcohol to kill all the bacteria so that it didnt stink.
