@carndrifter u can kill anything under about fallow deer sized game but only shoot things like deer with a 22 in the head no neck or body shots because that wont finish it of enough for it to die. i shot my fallow deer with a 22 and now i use a 308 for wapiti in new zealand GL with ur hunting =]

A high school classmate of mine actually bowhunted black bear back in the day. He said that with proper shot placement (heart-to-both-lungs), a black bear will fall more easily than a whitetail. It's brown bears and grizzly bears for which you need some serious firepower.

@hellow533 .270 is a good deer/antelope/goat/etc gun, but you better be a good shot and also have a good look at it to try it. You might end up just clipping it and then have to walk 6 miles trying to find it. All you'd end up with is a good hike in the forest and a wounded bear. I use 30-06, however that round drops considerably with longer shots. I'd probably go .300 win mag or something like that.

.44 Mag is a good black bear defense handgun but only for very close range. .308 Win. or larger is a good rifle choice. I hunt Black bears with a .338 Win Mag.
