Miserere means Have mercy , like Domine Iesu Christe, Fili Dei, miserere mei, peccatoris wich means Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

"miserere" literally means "have pity", as in a plea. But the word is very evocative of wretchedness, as the word "misere" (adverb) means "desperately" or "miserably".

As a classics scholar I have beef with the fact that they pronounce it wrong, it should be "mis - e - re - ray"..... but in a song like this, I think I can forgive that...... this is possibly my favourite Empire song, though Sunny Moon would run it close
