"A Place to Call Home" is probably one of the best compositions he ever did. A lot of the rest get bogged down in complexity, this one has a melody, sticks with it, and soars.
I love all Final Fantasy games. No one is better than the other (Well...so far, only XIV has been a disappointment). They all have their pros and cons (FFXIV seems to have more cons than pros, though).
Anyway, I love all FF games...I love Uematsu and his music. He's right up there with Mozart and Beethoven, in my opinion.
I think I just had a moment. While I do adore Final Fantasy IX, I never really cared for Melodies of Life. Melodies, for me, was just forgettable and felt as if it were just shoehorned in compared to the other songs that fill other FF games. It was too slow, soft, and felt a bit... cheesy by comparison.
But then I listen to this version, and it's -flawless-. The orchestral, the lyrics, the deeply passionate vocals morph what I found boring into this magnificent song.
Susan Calloway has a very beautiful voice and this song was the reason why i got my Distant Worlds 2 Cd Signed by Uemastu and Her i cried when i heard this song and my fiancee just hugged me tight and held me like a baby and then kissed me this song was also played at my wedding
FINAL FANTASY I cannot compare to FINAL FANTASY II which cannot compare to FINAL FANTASY III which cannot compare to FINAL FANTASY IV which cannot compare to FINAL FANTASY V which cannot compare to FINAL FANTASY VI which cannot compare to FINAL FANTASY VII which cannot compare to FINAL FANTASY VIII which cannot compare to FINAL FANTASY IX which cannot compare to FINAL FANTASY X which cannot compare to FINAL FANTASY XI which cannot compare to FINAL FANTASY XII which cannot compare to FFXIII
IX was a very well-rounded addition. At first it had that quaint medieval atmosphere with quirky characters, princesses, and magic. But then it escalates to a planetary-scale epic similar to that of VII and VIII. The music's very diverse, and so many minigames...yeah, IX did a lot right :)
@chrispen9 Yes indeed it is sir! Its the main theme of FF9, and is meant to be the song Garnet (Dagger) sings, that her mother originally sung to her, and Zidane calls it "our song" when he talks to Dagger, not to mention its the song that Zidane sings to get back to Dagger at the end, after he was burried under that tree ^_^
I agree with Alexandrophile. Her voice is good, but not fir this song. It sounds too harsh. A softer, sweeter voice would have done better for the song.
When Distant Worlds toured New York they played this track, with Susan Calloway performing live. This song was so much more powerful and moving when performed live that I would URGE anyone who has not attended a Distant Worlds concert to do so if possible.
The dudes sitting behind me were literally stifling their sobs. I'm not going to lie, I was trying my damnedest to hold back tears as well. It was absolutely my favorite performance that night, and one of my most favorite FF tracks ever.
So here I was, at the end of FF IX, thinking to myself "Yeah, that was a cool game and all, but not as awesome as the previous ones". Then I heard this, tried to hold back my tears, and failed. One of the few songs I can think of where lyrics actually made me cry, simply because they're so sad, yet so full of hope. Just like the game.
@Heebs1313 I can't remember her name, but i saw her live and met her after Distant worlds II concert in Stockholm last year... I'll let you know if I remember the name, She's swedish by the way!
Beautiful version of this song! Although, I wish the voice was a little.. more gentle? Like Emiko Shiratori's. Actually, if Emiko sang in this version, I'd probably repeat this all day, every day. Though, the singer here is also very good :) But importantly, I just love how the song is composed in this version :)
Final Fantasy IX has one of the most beatiful soundtracks and story of any video game of all time. FF9 is in my top three favorite FFs ever with out a doubt.
IX had a deeply philosophical story and themes. It is all about keeping memories, because it is all you have in the end, but also ... "leave them now and see what tomorrow brings". It is about living with a casual nostalgic look at the past, but still moving on.
@RunFasterPussycat i totally agree :) I'm what my name indicates and i'm absolute to that! Especially in the soundtracks part! :) But I love every soundtrack Nobuo composes. WTF! I realize i love everything about FF! :p
@RunFasterPussycat 9 was good but not flawless. the thing that annoyed me the most was issuing a command that the character will execute a few minutes after. it was a solid game though. plus, it has vivi. who doesn't love vivi? too bad it was overshadowed by comparisons from older games.
@RunFasterPussycat I cant agree more wit u but, i dont like comparing 9 to 8 and 7 because 9 had elements from 7 and 8 in it and it was relased after those two so square was only going to improve on it .... but to me, 9 had the best soundtrack overall
At the start the main menu music plays, but as she starts singing you can actually hum the overworld theme (Crossing those Hills). That theme (and final fantasy 7 theme) are among my favorite final fantasy overworld themes :D
"So far and away see the bird as it flies by, gliding through the shadows of the clouds up in the sky. I’ve laid my memories and dreams upon those wings, leave them now and see what tomorrow brings"
So beautiful and hopeful. Soul touching song, in every sense of the word. .')
@BloodyScreams I wouldn't think it's her fault anyway. I read an interview with her where she said that the music is recorded then Mr Roth plays it to her and she records with the recorded music playing. So it's the nature of the arrangement, not her fault I don't think.
in my opinion, I feel the singer has not portrayed the feelings of this song. I went back to listen to Emiko Shiratori's version, it is better than this version.
This seriously has to be my favorite song. Play me any song from any country or time period, and it's hard to imagine any of them beating "Melodies of Life" in my book.
Beautiful! *sniffs* Oh so beautiful!
