The 8 article from the spanish constitution says that the military should act if somewhere wants to be independent, and this is against the human rights.

@mailhoax yes but barcelona or catalania isnt recognised as an independent state of europe but part of spain, there for spain has every right to intervene military if needed to stop succession. This is supported by euorpean law so spain wont allow independence. This is why braitain still gets to keep ireland, scotland & wales as part of greater britain.

Besides why do catalanians want idependence, there are ot of benefits being part of spain. For one ur football league will be awfull.

@mailhoax listlen to my point in all of this..if catalans got independence then alot of other city states will call for independence. The basque, scots, irish, sicilians and many more. This will become end of europe. Self determination in terms of autonomous is understandable which i respect and is granted by spanish constitution i believe, but independence thats a nationalistic & idealistic way to declare yourself or a nation. Nationalism will only lead to a bloody end as history has shown.

@SolidTube911 If Catalonia wants to declare independence, there will be lots of other places that will be interested, but is not about interest, its about if they are able to get enough democracy to get the independence, and if it happends, its up on every one. You can search about Quebec and Groendland, and many more that they have the right to vote for it. Its a right and it should be applyed, but I can wait till 4-8 years and we will get an overwhelming majority. Patience is better!

@mailhoax secondly Logicly speaking it would make sense stoping a breakaway of an autonomous region for the greater good of the whole country. Stoping nationalist before it starts a wave of conflicts that results in a civil war before it has an opportunity to grow. Keeping a lid on leftist is also a good idea as shown quite reasontly they have become very powerful in europe. Just like george bush said "death of a few means survivor of many".

@mailhoax Finaly about football as we in UK are big fans of it & invented it. I was only making a reference to catalan & spanish common culture. The spanish league dubbed la liga or primare league is prob the biggest league in the world. If catalan became independent it wouldnt have the level of competition & level of football would decrease so much that barcelona would become insignificant in europe. Fc Barcelon is a symbol of catalania pride right? prob the biggest thing coming from catalania.

but the thing is if you go to any province or region in any part of the world there will be some which will constantly want independance eg Scotland, Galicia, Tibet, Northern Ireland, Gaza, South Ossetia, Gibraltar, Montserrat, Falkland Islands. And then you've got Catalonia!

I'm not this kind of weird person who's overly patriotic for Spain. I just don't understand why Catalonia should be any different to the regions i listed above.

If every country simply gave in to the wishes of these regions, we would live in a world which would be much more complicated than it is already as there would be more governments which means more laws, more arguments and eventually more wars. It's not as if Spain gives no rights to Catalonia - it gives many rights to the region!

It's simply people like 4banderas who have to disrupt the peace that is present in Catalonia at the moment.

I understand what you are saying Carlonski, and yes, it would be very nice to live in a countryless planet, at the end of the day, barriers are there 'cos of all the bureoucracy. Catalonia is a region where people live in armony, respecting each others language choices, at least that is what I saw. You have the right to express yourself in Catalan or Spanish.

What I strongly frown upon are those who force their language (spanish) and spanish culture onto others in Catalonia. There's only one country (andorra) and one "region", Catalonia, where I can learn Catalan and its culture. There are many countries where I can easily learn Spanish and their cultures. So why supress Catalonia? Why try to increase the learning hours of Spanish in Catalonia when I would have no interest in the language/culture?
