I think I've figured it out:

Those creepers were the primary component of an organized assassination attempt against you, which was fueled by jealousy of your lava house. Those skeletons in the cave were softening you up and driving you toward the path were the creepers were hiding around the perfect blindspot. Since u survived, they were forced to go to plan B, redirecting the flow of lava over your roof. This hurt u and drove u outside, allowing the chief skeleton to deliver the killing blow.
