I don't think this techniique is something to be emulated. Lots of times, these guys get away with bad form and technique on certain shots because they've hit millions of balls and are in perfect physical shape. But what's demonstrated here is not ideal. You'll never see Federer hitting a shot like this. Gasquet regularly hits with his weight falling backwards, jumping in the air, and takes wild flails at the ball often. Footwork and balance are also questionable.
Yes, the 2nd shot in the video is an exception, not the rule. He normally steps across his body with his right foot and shifts his weight to that foot. That's what recreational players should do all the time imo. Gasquet established the intentional jump with his left foot as an effective option to deal with high bouncing balls. He's perfectly balanced throughout the shot. That and his coordinative skills allow him to hit the ball with great control, extreme spin and a lot of power.
if you look at gasquet in both of the shots ,he is on the defence thus that is why he is transferring his weight on the back foot so he can push the ball forwards and keep his balance whilst being pushed back by the ball
uuugh being a gasquet fan is frustrating, the man is a fool, for wasting his talent first of all, secondly being a tit and doing drugs. But he plays so well when hes on form :'(
love gasquet's backhand.. but he is not the most talented on tour!!... his forehand is crap federer and nadal are consistent players that's why they're on top playing at a high level consistently that is talent^_^
hahaha nalbandian cant beat nadal anymore because nadal won the last match thats GENIOUS LOGIC. your obviously a small-minded person to judge TALENT off of ranking points, you can tell by watching people play.
REMEMBER THERE IS A DISTINCTION BETWEEN TALENT AND SUCCESS
what are you kidding me? are you saying like nalbandian is more talented than rafa nadal?? coz nadal can do whatever the hell you think nalbandian can do backhand forehand and what the heck is ranking points got to do with this anyway?
Gasquet and Nalbandian are the most talented players on the World Tour, but they both have problems with regularity. Federer and Nadal doesn't have the best technicque, doesn't have the best groundstrokes, but they are regular and fit on every tournament, and that's why they are No.1 and 2. Also, Gasquet must work on his serve (technically) and focus (mentally).
Nadal and Federer are far more talented than Gasquet and Nalbandian, they aren't in Fed's and Nadal's league. You don't win 19 grand slams between them without being the most talented players in the world ... EVER
stubberz, all four of those people are in the same league. Nalbandian has beat Nadal more times than Nadal has beat him, and gasguet is simply another federer that never got his shit together properly. gasguet on form is perhaps the most amazing thing to watch.
There is a clear upper echelon in the world of tennis...
Fed and Nadal at 1 and 2 are far and away better than anyone else on tour (look at the ranking points...its ridiculous)...Then Djokovic and Murray are ahead of the rest of the field by a considerable amount...
Roddick is a pretty good 5 but beyond that is where you'll find the Gasquets and Nalbandians of the world...
Gasquet is NOWHERE near Roger Federer's level of talent...and Nalbandian can't beat Nadal anymore (see Indian Wells 09)
gasquet has the potential to be better than nadal, murray and djokovic, he has tons of talent, and was much better than nadal as a junior, but he never got control of the mental aspect, thats his downfall
if they were the most talented they would win. Talent also has to do with confidence and consistency. Its not just how good you can hit the ball when you feel good/are having a good day-its how good you can be day in and day out
Federer and Nadal not the best technicque? what the fuck are talking about? federer simply plays the most perfect technique tennis that anyone as ever played. nadal plays more unconventional but still nearly perfectly. explaining their high rankings only with their consistency is like... more than ridiculous. also, Nalbandian and Gasquet are definitely NOT in the same league than Nadal and Federer. not even close. what the hell is up with all you guys?
it's pretty amazing how gasquet handles high balls up his shoulders. he sort of "jumps" in it and still not messing with his timing. federer needs to learn shots like that, to have a chance against nadal's high topspin balls on any surface.
yeah, he uses his legs to not only jump up and meet the ball, but to also generate more power and torque as well, if federer can become more comfortable at taking high backhand shots and generating pace off of them, he'll have a better backhand against nadal
I always thought as a rally shot, the two-hander would always be superior, based on common sense and evidence from the pros. Gasquet has shattered this, showing us a once in a lifetime stroke that essentially creates a forehand out of a one-handed backhand. Spectacular
i don't like that backhand, using a loop on the takeback looks ugly. i don't know about anyone in the last 15 years, but the only other player i can think of that had a loopy back-swing like that was Thierry Champion.
do you think using a loop helps hit high bouncing shots?
I think the way of takeback doesn't matter as long as he gets underneath the ball to brush it upwards. The advantage of a loop is added racket head speed, but you also need more time to set up the swing. If your timing isn't perfect, you might hit it late.
@jdhf983y4uhu ?The consensus is that Gasquet has the most beautiful and effective backhand in the game. You're one in a million who thinks otherwise, which tells me that you know zero about tennis.
@PhilippedeHerte i knew enough to play pro sets with two gand slam champions and play a few rounds of the orange bowl main draw and have boxes delivered to me full of all the equipment i wanted for free. i'll take the opinions of the people mentioned rather than a you as i suspect they know a little more than you when it comes to tennis.
@PhilippedeHerte no, i haven't got a bridge to sell. it's hardly the greatest claim in the world, 1000s of juniors have played the orange bowl and/or trained with pros. you just don't like it because you tried to sound clever and ended up looking like a tit.
@jdhf983y4uhu I'm not going to debate a ridiculous nobody. The tennis consensus is that Gasquet has the best 1HB in the game and aesthetically the most beautiful. If you think otherwise then all it means is that you're a big mouth tennis hack.
@PhilippedeHerte i see you've changed your tune. first you said it means i know zero about tennis, and now, after i pointed out your mistake, you say i'm a big mouth tennis hack lol
i'd like to see you play. i bet when you try and serve an ace the ball hits you on the head and you smash your racquet on the ground lol
I cant choose between one and dubble handed backhand. I've played my whole life dubble handed, but just like one handed more. My one handed backhand isnt that good. But that because I am going for it because I am switching the whole time between them. What shall I do> I have a ranking 5. My trainer says I have to do it. But something in me wants it but says not.
If you have a better two hander go with that. If you really want to play with the one hander than go ahead. It's all about preference really. You'll find a lot of the tour players now really use the two hander.
mmm he has a very good backhand but i still beleave that federer has a better bakchand, why? wel coz Federer has more balance than Gasquete on his shot
Please look into his match against Murray in Rogers cup 2006. That's one example I remember where he flicked a cross court passing shot off his backhand 10 feet behind the baseline for a superb winner. He can do anything with that backhand. And yeah, his backhand is much more lethal than Federer's.
I don´t agree with it being much more lethal, as far as top spin is concerned they are pretty much on the same level, but roger has a flick of the wrist, which is exclusive to roger..look at games from the 2006 masters cup..fed´s ripping winners from his backhand..
From personal experiance I can tell you that with a strong eastern grip like gasquet's or even an extreme grip like Henin's any flick of the wrist is close to impossible because so much of the wrist is already behind the handle. That being said not only is Gasquet's backhand more lethal because of his bigger strike-zone and pace, but he can compensate for these wrist problems by hitting with an open stance (like in the second shot in the video).
If Federer had that backhand, Nadal would never win a match.
