how can you NOT love MTD? Michael Tobias is a very respected man, if it comes to build masterclass guitars! and if you look at the prices.. well, you think they will fool you, since the prices aren't that high for these fantastic basses!
I had a 5 string Kingston bass for about 6 months and I wound up selling it. Ergonomically, it was very nice but sonically I felt that it just didn't have the punch I wanted. I do own two Ken Smith basses...a BSR5J and a BSR6EG, which are right up there with the MTD's and I will have a USA series MTD 6 string very soon. Hopefully by Christmas 2011.
You pay big money for pretty wood and he gives you one choice of preamp and pickups. The sound of these USA basses are only very good when played alone (solo) but in a band mix they DO NOT jump out at you nor are they easily heard. I have not met a drummer who likes these basses in a live setting either. Build quality and comfort are pretty much better than most but I'm not buying the "you can get any sound" line. I replaced the MTD pre and pickups with EMG and liked it much better.
I couldn't even contemplate saying a negative thing about Michael Tobias. He's a good of the low end. Even though it's the newer ones made by gibson, I absolutely LOVE my tobias killer b bass! Smoooth pau ferro neck, low action w/no fret noise, AMAAAZING active bortolini pick ups, and one of the most comfortable and best sounding basses I've ever touched. The MTD designs are hands down classic. I aspire to get an mtd 6 string soon
I've watched these videos maybe 5 times now, always a pleasure to watch a master talk about his craft. As a amateur builder myself, Mike is a HUGE inspiration.
MTD 4ever! I've changed 4 basses in 3 years, but my humble, 600 quid MTD Kingston is with me since 5 years and will for a long, loong time... Why spend 3 grand on a MM? Or 1,5 on a Fender, when you can get all the bass you need and want for a third of that???
@ssit72 F**k yes just bought a (mtd kzx-5) dont get me wrong this bass can kick some serious ass but i find the action to be kind of stiff and not as player friendly as my jazz bass and even tough it can get some ken smith type tones and some hi fi jazz bass sound. i had to sell me six string ken smith . Right know kzx-5 is not doing it for me . i hope this is not a $1800 mistake it has been two days i am trying to let it grow on me. my ken smith took 5 min. to decide and i was hooked
@squiresuzuki Make it 3 times more expensive. MTD hand basses are about 4700 - 5800 dollar. But that isn't really a surprise if you see the way it's build!
I love the Amazing Tone in these bass's they are so versatile and so unique. I own a MTD Kingston Heir RH They are part of the More affordable collection Around $1,000, And I love it every bass player should Try one! Ill be posting videos soon too if You'd like to see it.
My dream is to own a Tobias classic again. signed by the master himself "Michael Tobias." You can see me showing off my Tobias on you tube under Tequila Rose Band or Gary Holly.
When I recover from the theft of my Tobias I'll find a way to replace it. If M.T. might consider making my dream come true and signing my next bass, it would sure lessen the pain of my loss and I would be forever grateful. To owners of a Tobias bass "cherish it."
if you had half a clue who this guy was you'd shut your mouth you fuking biggot(sirdewdalot). This guy is one of the most respected master craftsman in the bass community and has more talent in his pinky finger than you will have in your entire life. so why don't you do the world a favor and go crawl back into what ever hole you came out of.

@blueman2bass But in this video he's not making the kingston series. He's making custom USA made models which cost 5x more

Michael Tobias should make regular guitars to go along with their awesome basses.
