Yeah, it was a week after this fight. Shuler said that from the cash he earned from this fight, he wanted to by a motorcycle. He did, of course, and died in a terrible motorcycle accident one week later.
Actually, he was very highly touted in the early 80s, then reached a point where he wasn't exactly living up to it entirely. He was, however, a very legitimate #1 contender. He just couldn't deal with the action Hearns was dealing him. But, he was perhaps one of the great U.S. amateurs of all time.
His hooks were landing and you can clearly hear the "thud." One can only wonder why he didn't fight Hagler this way. It's funny in boxing. You only sometimes get one change to get it right. De La Hoya was never as good as he was in the first eight rounds against Trinidad. No way he should have lost that. Oh well.
Thanks for posting this fight. A lot of people don't remember Schuler because of his tragic death.

Devastating performance by Hearns.
Shuler was tragically killed not long after the fight, Hearns attended his funeral and donated the NABF belt he had won off Shuler
saying Shuler had held it longer therefore deserved it.
A class act from a class guy.

Motor cycle accident like davey moores was probably suicide.Thats what Ray Leonard would look like against Hearns if the fights weren't fixed.

TRUE 1-punch KO power is rare. Tommy sure as hell had it.
