Wait until those fan clutch bushings wear out. They're a pain in the ass to replace. They're pressed in, and are hard to remove. That's part of our OTR inspections. I enjoy working on them a whole lot more than driving
Just got back from ANOTHER band competition, and had a thought cross my mind... is the AC belt driven on all of the J4500s, and does it hurt them to idle with the AC on for a long time? We sat in the parking lot of the school idle for close to 5 hours (hold up at the competition, and we were there early anyway), and the engine was never turned off, nor was the AC. Is it okay for the engines to idle for long times like that?
@DragonTamer2345 Idling doesn't support complete fuel combustion, which can leave deposits on the cylinder walls. Coaches have a high idle function, which provides power to run the AC and every other electrical accessory. But what you may hear about idling not being harmful to the environment is flat wrong. Our company programs all of our coaches to shut down after 30 mins of idling to save fuel. Idling is actually illegal in some cities which can carry a heavy fine.
@DragonTamer2345 But you'll hear opinions from both sides. Take from it what you want. It's always cool to find people who are into diesel engine technology. But like I said, I drive coaches for a living, and I love it. Anyone on here, myself included would be more than glad to answer any question you have. J4500, btw, is an awesome coach.
I love how these things sound at idle. Just got home from a band trip in a J4500 owned by Cline Tours, and that thing sounds nice outside and inside, idle, and moving at 75MPH. Just a low low roar on the inside, and a nice quiet sound on the outside unless you're RIGHT behind the bus. You also can't tell me it has no power... that thing will take off and sink you into the seats!
The Detroit Series 60 engine still has a Detroit Diesel 6V92 turbo sounding of that engine, but that Detroit Series 60 engine is louder than the Detroit Diesel 6V92 turbo engine, and a Cummins Diesel engine, cuz Cummins has a quiet engine, and its a clean engine! and always a cleaner quality.
LOL yep so get your ass in there and change the water pump with out removing the egr cooler, and do it under the book time of 1.3 hrs. when you get that done change out the air compressor to the 2 piston style the new and up grated version. you have 4.5 hours to do it in. Sounds like i have worked on a few ?
Can't mistake that sound for anything else for sure! The average A/C system in a car is rated at roughly 1.5 to 2 ton capacity, which means it can cool off a small home quite well, this amazes folks when they find this out. I wonder what size apartment building the system on this bus could handle!
id yank it out and put a custom 600 hp detroit 60 series or a cummin isx .those engines or cool but fully loaded ive seen them they dont pull that well fully loaded with people .i know those old busses with those 8v92s cant pull worth a shit unless they was wide open ,then they might do something but if they are governed forget it ...
i tell you those greyhound busses the old ones i tell you pulls like a loaded truck up a steep grade but on a flat open hiway and theyre not leaning like its going to tip over theyll run but the new ones with the series 60 oh yeah they can pull and can run fully loaded ,thats a fact
yah those are great engines! i work Detrot Diesel...well accually Valey Power Systems. they are great until you have pull the head while it is still in the damn thing haha.
It is nice to hear the 14 liter version of the series 60 in a bus. I just wish Detroit Diesel would make a V8 version of the series 60. like they with the 6-71 when making the 8v71. Thank you for posting this.
Yes i have driven quite a few of those. I dont like those buses, although they were well made. I have also driven the 6v92 not just the 8v92. Thanks so much for viewing.
Well they are sluggish motors, but they were good at the time. I am partial to the big cats and the series 60-which came to the road in 1987 although not to popular at the time. What i am anxiuos tro get my hands on is the ALL NEW "DD15" engine.
Yeah for now....but that is going to change according to the "MCI" represenative i spoke to last week. Hey, thanks for viewing and commenting! -BOGAR!
Are they going to put DD15 in current MCI model, or are they designing new model to acomidate the larger size of the DD15. I know the reason they disconteued the C and B series is because they could fit a series 60 in them.
I am sorry i just saw your comment. It is 515 Horsepower and 1650 Torque. I appreciate your viewing and commenting, hope you keep watching. Your welcome anytime. -BOGAR!
Yes there is a button inside for "high idle". It is better for the engine to be at high idle while just parked and running, especially if you have the A/C running. It also helps keep the oil pressure up. Thanks for viewing and commenting. -BOGAR!
sorry, i just saw your comment! well part of it is in the back section of the motor. The other part, you can see in the video. Those big red pipes are the turbo they go left to right and curve to the back of the engine.
Hello,"amfan12"-if you are reffering to what i think you are, then that is part of the FAN CLUTCH and it leads in to the A/C system and the engine cooloing system. These are a pain if it goes out on the road, which has happened to me twice over the years. I was in utah doing a long-haul charter at the time. The second time, i was in San Diego last year. Thank you for viewing and commenting, Subscribe if you like! Have a nice day. -BOGAR!
Hey,"amfam12"- then we are talking about the same part. Now the radiator is on the very left side of the engine compartment, and is not visible unless you stick your head in there. If you look close and pause you will see the anti-freeze/water CAP to the left of that yellow control box.
"good on gas"(diesel) How does 6-7 miles to the gallon sound? Good thing it has a 225 gallon fuel tank! It will run for about 1400-1500 miles before fill-up, it depends also on where you are driving so it does vary. When you do fill it, be prepared to pay about 1200 dollars.
What up "kuntzy2"? That yellow control panel is just that, a control panel. With one switch you can fire the engine on and shut it off. With another you can control the webasto and turbo. With another you can prime the injectors. With still another you can reset the computer. Thank you so much for commenting!! Feel free to subscribe.

An afterthought, it's comforting to know that this DDEC 60 will never know the hell of being a G4500 ;-)
