Borodin was an incredible composer. All of the Five wrote incredible pieces but Borodin was unique in his many different styles of brilliant music where the others in the Five could only write one type well.
@Celiocobra1 Someone said that "Borodin is a composer who wrote the least amount of music to be considered immortal". As for the Mighty Five, they were all great except Cui, who is more famous for his scathing and unjust critique of Rachmaninoff's 1st Symphony than for any of his music.
I played this symphony during the summer and the main theme brought a tear to my eye when it's first played by the horn at 0:20, then by the woodwind at 1:00 and by the strings at 5:02. It's so moving!
I played this at NMC in 1965, and it's always been a big favorite of mine. Other than the quick beginning of the first movement, it's really good!! I'm crying my eyes out!!!!!
Wow, you have great ears; are you a conductor? The whole performance is quite beautiful, however. The London Symphony in those days was the equal of any orchestra in the world.

Could you also please share Martinon's fantastic recording with the LSO of Rimsky-Korsakov's CAPRICCIO ESPAGNOLE? It's the best, ever!

I love how russian composers utilize repeated 8th notes for dramatic affect. It's really (dare I say) a bit of a precursor to the heavy metal riff.
