Check out the NiteIze brand LED maglite bulb replacements from Walmart. They normally won't work with lantern flashlights because the batteries are the wrong polarity. With your hack, though, you can reverse the polarity and use the bulb (it has an automatic circuit to keep a steady output, really works well in those reflectors. Another hack is to just take one of those lanterns, solder wires with slide connectors to the lantern terminals, and run them to a SLA block batteryduct taped to it
You all need to quit your clucking.... just built one and it works great. Battery internals vary so you might need to improvise a bit, but for power freaks there is plenty of room for another battery pack for a total of 8 batteries.
advice a borrowed tripod from a fried would help us see whats going on better
i am not meaning this in a rude manner simply just hinting and asking could you please get one cause this was very interesting i loved it but i would be able to see the details better if the camera was still
@karzygijose The bulb would likely have a very short life at 9 volts and because of high current draw a standerd 9 volt battery would not last very long , theres a reason why a 6 volt lantern battery uses 4 large cells in series inside and is much heavier it stores much more energy in its tank so to speak its like comparing a triple A to a D battery both are 1.5 volts but the large D battery has much more stored energy .
EACH BATTERY IS 1.2V AND YOU HAVE 4 WHICH MAKES IT 4.8V SO YOU UNDER POWERING THE TORCH THE BULB WONT LAST VERY LONG WHICH WILL COST YOU MORE THAN YOU SAVED ON REPLACING THE BATTERYS WITH 4AA SIZE YOU COULD DO BETTER BY USING 5AA BATTERYS AT 1.2V WHICH WOULD GIVE YOU 6V FULL ON
Why reverse hack a battery? Youll spend more moey doing it anyway. If you need 6 or nine volts and only have AA just wire em together untill you get the voltage you need and you wont even need all that other junk. This HACK is WHACK!!!
4 AAs for a lantern battery are like a sponge for hammer. I bet they doesn't last longer than 20 minutes. Your AAs have capacity of about 2000 mAh - that's more or less 10% of the capacity the original cells had. D-size batteries would fit the original casing (they have the same diameter) providing up to 10000 mAh. You can also try F-size industrial cells (F-size is the size of the original cells, so they will fit perfectly).

Best bet for this mod is to still use the 4 AA's at 1.25v each but replace the tungsten filament bulb with an LED replacement - bright as hell, uses very little current compared to a filament that uses mass current to become heated enough to produce light. Only drawback is the 6V lantern that use sealed beams - no LED replacement for those and they suck a battery dry in no time. 4 D NiMH type are more appropriate for those. I used the carbon rods in old batteries years ago for a carbon arc light
@rhblakeman I agree with the LED recommendation. Energizer NiMH D-cells have the same mA-h rating as their AA cells. You need to buy $40 NiMH D-cells to get close to the approximately 20,000 mA-h rating of Energizer alkaline D-cells. The Energizer 529 6V lantern has maybe 27,000 mAh at the same drain. You can buy a 4-D to 6V lantern adapter at Digi-Key for about $3 (MPD brand model BA4D-S). This isn't an opinion about any of these companies, just sharing what I read.

This guy is obviously bored and semi retared... ever heard of amperage or storage capacity. It would have been mildly smarter to use 8 rechargeable C or D cells.... OR.... and this is a big OR..... BUY THE FUCKIN BATTERS ON SALE!!!!
yeah, to get the 6V you put the batteries in series so its the same lifetime as just 1 battery. 1D lasts a lot longer than 1AA due to being larger, this is just a retarded project
yes it will last about 1/10th the time that it would on the lantern battery. This is still a pretty decent hack though I would just upgrade to C or D cells. Using D cells will give nearly the same run time as the lantern battery. BTW inside the 6v lantern battery are 4 F cells that are proprietary to all lantern batteries.
If he had used 5 of these, he would have had exactly 6 Volts again. Rechargeables can even have more power than D-Cell Alkaline batterys. There are already REAL 3000 mAh AA cells out there. Check it out.
I have built a xtremely bight (luxeon LED) torch. It has 4 MAX. 4300 mAh AA rechargeables inside a 2mm thick V2A pipe and is rechargable using 6.1 Volts input. It has the switch on the back, where the charge-jack sits. The lifetime of one charge goes between 3 - 4,5 hours, the LED gets 700mA. The batterys have only 3700 mAh in real. But they are still cool.
@boringrem yeah really i just hate that when those people with shaky hands dont at least build a 5 minute tripod, i mean seriously! i dont want to make my self look like a goof just because i cant hold the camera right.(and i do own a tri pod) so instead of looking like a fool i went and found one in my grand ma's attic and it was for an old DSR-250. Wow what a get.
I have this funny little adaptor thing that allows you to stick 4 c or d cells (can't remember) into this plastic thing, and it ends up the exact same size a 6v lantern one, it rocks.
You know. You have potentially created a marketable item. If I were you I would look into creating a design based on this idea. I believe People might be willing to buy such an item. But it's all in the design.
u need to get a girl to hold your camera. and don't throw away batteries! don't you have a recycle place at your local bank or something? haha wouldn't it have been easier to just use a 3-AA flash light for $5.99?
For additional benefits, there are LED replacements for the 6v incandescent bulbs. That increased efficiency will make the converted model run much longer on a recharge!
I've seen them at Sears. They're hair-raisingly expensive, compared to incandescent, but yes, they're MUCH more efficient & not prone to breakage/burnout.
I like your idea, but I have to point out that 4 rechargeable AA batteries will only have a voltage of 4.8 since they are I think universally 1.2 each. You'd really need 5 in a pack to get 6 volts
I have no doubt that this would work but it seems like a lot of effort to do this when you can get an adaptor that takes 4 Ds and fits into the flashlight just like the lantern battery. I actually have one of these adaptors which came with my Krypton Lumilight 4600 flashlight. I use 4 NiMH D batteries in this light. I keep it charged during the stormy seasons in case of power outtages.
Seems like this would make more sense with a quick trip to Radio Shack to get a couple of two cell C or D holders and ten seconds with a soldering iron to adapat it for more longevity. AAs don't last that long in a 6V flashlight.
it's 4,8v not 6v

hmm won't the batteries last for only a very short time as:
1. the torch is designed for the lantern batteries (4 D cells right???)
2.rechargeables carry a small charge (and most of them that i see are only 1.2v
so won't it only last a short time b4 it goes dead??

Great idea, I think I would try to get 4 of
the largest rechargeables in there as to increase recharge periods.
I don't think I would try 4 AA packs in paralel to 4x4 packs in series, because the
weaker AA's would tend to be charged by the stronger ones, creating a inefficient mess.
But 4 of the bigest 1.5V batteries sounds interesting, anyway enough of my rambling.
Interesting Video !
