@ashwinbhat123 The Sami people are the arctic indigenous people inhabiting Sápmi, which today encompasses parts of far northern Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Kola Peninsula of Russia, but also in the border area between south and middle Sweden and Norway. This is their music which is called yoik which expresses emotions and memories trough the sound of your voice more than like the western music that uses words although a few words can occur in a yoik :)
Love Saami music, specially Joik, I am full blood Lakota Sioux from the US. I dig all the voices. Music is similar ( almost the same ) as our Lakota songs. Come to Lakota country you are welcomed. Oh by the way we live in Tee Pees too. HHe.
they actually arent saying anything. its called yoiking, they just make harmonic noises with their throats and it comes out to be a masterpiece like this lol
can i get what he is saying in english?? lol ive always wanted to know what they are saying, ive heard they are singing about a person or a thing using only verbs or nouns or something like that
Sofia Jannok's "Irene" and "Arvas" have yoik-flavored pop.
If you mean reedy chanting in general, you might also research "throat singing" (see Alash and Hun huur tu) and "canto a tenore" (see Tenores di Bitti).
just do it. its more powerful when its your own joik
and to learn traditaional ones, dont forget about the "influence" the church had effectivly destroying the joik.....not alot of people know actualy traditional joiks....but check out wimme and adjagas
ah thanks, man! but a joik is like singing with a lot of going up and down in key right? i guess i can do that! i can sing well in key so... ill try XD
I know where you are coming from, I have only recently experienced yoiking, but I just do my own thing, even if the singing is not great. :) It is still very moving if it comes from the heart.
There are some sites I know about Yoik usage and other Sámi traditions, if you would like the list message me.
This is some of the most beautiful yoik I have heard.. Do you know of any websites, books, etc. that one could learn more about the fantastic practice at? I am extremely interested.
visit my page to get to know some more Sami singers;-) By the way, very good voices are singing in this video:-) it is a pity that the video is soooooooooooo black....
