'amn, son!!! this is some very, very cool and learn-ed shit! Moot- (may i call you Moot?) quite inspiring video... first saw your Moog Filtatron demo and it's the only one that gave me what i was looking for- a demo of the filters! i've wired up my own "iRig" and always wanted to run my sax through it but couldn't wrap my brain around the app... thanks to you i can get started, at least!
metric modulation isn't switching time signatures, it's switching tempo's by taking a different subdivision as your quarter note. but that doesn't matter. what DOES matter is that this one VERY nice sounding performance!
Fuuck yeah! This is were its at. Really really nice job. Im having a hard time liste to math rock, as it often seems forced and imposed, not letting it work for the music.
Hey, just wanted to say I think you made this sound great and all the time signatures really flow into one another naturally. Really groovy stuff. I first saw some of your videos back in 2006 on youtube and had somewhat forgotten about your work. I'm glad to find today that you have a bunch of new and amazing tracks.
@DaZeuhlUndazir I'm a huge fan of Magma! (Looks like you are too, from your username!) K.A. and Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh influenced this piece in a big way.
Seriously, no hyperbole, sincerely, you are.... One high level motherfucker.
99.99% of the people who are only interested in learning about your 'gear' could be handed that exact same gear wouldn't come anywhere close to being able to do what you do with it.
Yet another pathetic reminder of why I want to go leap off the nearest fucking bridge whenever I think of Justin Bieber winning 4 American Music Awards.
Just some creative criticism. I thought it was well done, first of all. The only thing I thought could be improved was the drumming. Not that it was bad or anything, just needed to be more... inspired? emotional? You can tell when a musician is really getting into it and I think he was holding back a bit. Then again, I'm used to hearing drummers like Lenny White and Billy Cobham with music like this, so I might be biased. Overall though, very good!
@deerfish3000 Very good criticism. Looking back at it, I find the whole thing to be a bit sloppy, but it was done on the fly basically, with no post-editing at all, except for two punch-ins (see description). Everything was built off of the drum part, which was put down first. It's kinda hard to play "emotionally" when you have no idea what the rest of the tune sounds like. And then again, comparing anybody to Lenny and Billy is...well...they are my drumming idols. Drumming gods! Peace!
Love it! The strangest time signature I've ever used in one of my own compositions was 39/16 (13 beats per measure, beat held by dotted eighth).
What are some of your favorite artists when it comes to irregular meter and metric modulation? For me, it's Kansas. My favorite example is the intro to the song Miracles out of Nowhere from their album Leftoverture. You should check it out, Moot.
There's this one thing I don't get about time signatures. Say you're playing 4/4. Which means there are 4 quarter notes per measure. What's a quarter note? How long does it last? How does that work? bpms? How do you count beats?
@YoussefFishere it's simple. BPM= beats per minute. listen to a metronome (you can find one online). Set it to 120 BPM, and just count 1,2,3,4 along with it. That's one measure of 4/4. To count 8th notes, you are dividing the quarter notes in half, so you say: 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and. For sixteenth notes, you divide it in half again: 1 e and a 2 e and a 3 e and a 4 e and a. (pronounce the 'a' like 'uh'.) Does that help?
@mootbooxle See, the thing is...while I understand that, I do not know what a beat is. How long does a beat last? I'm sure things would go smooth with a metronome...Do people simply use different speeds and get familiar with them or does one have to count how many beats there are in a minute?
@YoussefFishere when you nod your head to a beat of a song...you're most likely rocking it to quarter notes. you count them as "1 2 3 4" 8th notes would be rocking your head twice as fast. and 16 notes would be rocking your head twice as fast as that....hope that helps along with what mootbooxie said =)
for some one who dont like traditional maths... you certainly know how to apply maths.... I am wondering what talent you are to amass in the next 10 15yrs?
@zedster911 That's very kind of you. Yeah, I made very low grades in maths all through school...got some extra help in college which helped me get through it. I don't really think in logical terms; I'm more of an intuitive thinker...so I think the very concrete world of numbers just never "clicked" for me. But I do understand complex time signatures in music. I'm not thinking arithmetic in my head while playing this stuff - it's all feel, but it has a grounding in numbers. Cheers!
You unwittingly understand maths in a different sense of calculations etc.... if that makes sense.... as well as being pragmatic you "understand" which is a gift in its self
@RTjman hahaha! Before I got into music I wanted to be an electrical engineer...until I realized how much math you gotta learn. Not gonna happen! I struggled with math even in college, but for some reason this stuff makes perfect sense to me. I think it's more about feel than anything, really!
Hahahahahaha the time signature called 27/8 is hilarious! I'm not saying it doesn't sound good but it's just such a sick signature. I'd never ever count to 27, haha. I'd divide it into smaller bars but hey, whatever works for you! :)
Not so much a fan of the tune... But it was cool with odd time and you're talented to be playing all instruments like that :)
@TheMojoBeat yeah, 27/8! It's basically 14+13, that's how I count it...or rather, feel it...because at this tempo, there's no way you could actually count it, except maybe using Konokol!
Not saying that I agree or disagree with you on the merits of the tune itself...but I'd be curious to know - what do you not like about it? Be honest!
@mootbooxle I'm not sure... Sometimes you just don't feel it when you hear a song you know. :) But I guess it was a little bit too much all over the place... Atleast for me I had a hard time just enjoying it because it required a lot listening if you understand what I mean by that. Just a little bit too much of everything and no real rest or groove. Just a lot of different time signatures that makes you sit and count out loud (which of course was the whole point, but I'm answering the question).
@pileofkittens Well, I do it because I'm left handed! Over the years, I've gotten pretty used to playing both ways (as you can see in this video), but I still prefer the open-handed thing most of the time. It frees up both limbs to do a lot more things, whereas when you play the traditional way your left hand is kind of trapped under your right when on the hi-hat. Also, a lot of my favorite drummers play open, like Billy Cobham, Lenny White, and Narada Michael Walden!
Incredible... Wow moot with every video I'm more amazed with your skill, would absolutely love to do a collab with you! Do you wanna? I'm a guitarist and can pull off singing as well, love funk!
@GibsonRocks12 The Dotcom is the main lead sound you hear. I was controlling it from the Nord, which is also in the mix (Dotcom is panned left, Nord is panned right). I went back and "played" the knobs while I re-recorded the audio from the Dotcom.
This is absolutely damn amazing! Moot, man, it's probably because I typically don't listen to this kind of music (big EBM, Industrial, Darkwave fan here) at all but christ do you rock the f out!
Funny that 'hudsonvalleyguy313' mentioned "Explosion...", that was my introduction to your music.
Hey Matt, it's Jeff, dude this is awesome, very reminiscent of all the old school prog I was raised on! I love Mahavishnu and old Genesis, etc. Awesome stuff, I can't even comprehend those 19/8 and 27/8 patterns! Do you just feel 19/8 as 16/8+3/8 and 27/8 as 7+7+7+6?
@Gibson201 Hey man! I wasn't sure if you'd seen this or not...just posted it on your Facebook. You nailed it, those are some of my biggest influences! The way I feel 19/8 (like Celestial Terrestrial Commuters) is 6/4 + 7/8 basically, but you can also think of it like 16 + 3, as you said. 27/8, no way to count it, lol! I just think like 14/8 + 13/8. Basically, that section is a 7/4 thing with one 8th note shaved off every 4th measure. Craziness!
It has been awhile since I've been so inspired. Any recommendations for further listening and study? I only really know of Gentle Giant and Yes. I do not remember them ever going in this direction though. Thanks.
@willrobinsonensoniq Thanks! I definitely have some suggestions for you! Check out Mahavishnu Orchestra (especially the albums "The Inner Mounting Flame" and "Birds of Fire") - that's one of my biggest influences for this type of music. That should keep you busy for awhile! Peace!
@hudsonvalleyguy313 I wish that were possible! It was shot in analog, so the best I could do is like 360p. I could improve the sound though, and use a better rhythm track. Hmmm...I'll think about it!
