  • Doom ran slow most probably because it used a raycaster engine, therefore needed severe CPU love from Carmack(meaning programming the engine in assembly), which it probably didn't get. But that just makes me wonder, I've watched many 3DO vids, and I haven't seen any depth buffering (or variation thereof) issues on it, such as texture maps squiggling at the bottom of the screen which one saw in PS1 and old PC 3d games. Which makes me question the way the 3DO rendered 3D in the first place.

  • What, no mention of Plumbers Don't Wear Ties? :D

  • The 3DO idea of a cheaper licensee to developers is a good idea to get lots of developers to your system, but yeah it hurts you in the long run with a surplus of way to many games.

Also because the system is made by another company, that company expects a profit not a loss like most consoles have (then they make up for it in games). The whole marketing just doomed this console.

btw I want to say Time magazine called the 3DO "Best Product of 1993" pretty cool.

  • I think that for the time period the 3do was THE best system for games. I think it came out alittle to early and the price was way to high. Sony did their homework and solved the problems the 3do let go, which caused its short life span. Some of the 3dos games were really great for the time period, example. Killing time, need for speed, road rash, gex, fifa soccer, madden football, the list goes on and the fact that you could get games made by Vivid adult studios.(no one else had that)

  • Amiga isn't a company...

  • the 3do is a good system for its time and very powerfull however the lack of good games and the price killed it

  • You were playing Bleach by Nirvana on the CD Player screen werent you?

  • @SlasherMiniFilms Yes! For a company founded in 1991 and console released in 1993, I found it extremely appropriate.

  • I could not justify $600 for a console back then.

  • EA should reboot Gex like Ubisoft did Rayman. He could bring back game mascots.

  • I got an fz-10 for 60.00 and a goldstar for 35.00, bought two because the hard drive runs out of space when you save your games, the games can be downloaded and burned if you know how, I burned about 100 games. So for 100.00 I got basically the entire library, Star Control II is the best game on the 3do/

  • 8:22 he-man? XD

  • didnt James Rolfe (AVGN) have problems in finding a working 3DO? Im surprised you found one that worked first time!

  • @NarcoticEvil That was the CD-I, and nobody likes that console.

  • @NarcoticEvil that was the cdi the 3do is far better

  • What a time not? So many consoles so many changes .. cd-rom and multimedia...and so many horrible horrible bad ideas.

  • 3DO is really, really, cool. It's like having a 486 or a Pentium PC, but in a console, which makes it cheaper and easier to find.

  • wing commander 3 on 3do was awesome

  • don't forget Plumbers Don't Wear Ties!

  • Hey, Sega did themselves in when they released a number of subpar add ons to the Genesis. I mean you tell me what fucking genuis decided to release a CD add on to the Genesis, when the Saturn was coming out shortly after?

  • I got my Panasonic 3DO FZ-1 today in the post, and my own oppinion is... It's a seriously good system for its time. Looking back at the time where there was other consoles like the Philips CDi, Atari Jaguar, Super Nintendo, Sega Megadrive, Mega CD, 32x (ignoring the Sony Playstation and Sega Saturn)... When comparing the 3DO to the other next gens like the CDi and Jaguar... The 3DO shows its colours. :D. One hidden gem game I recommend is Powers Kingdom. :)

  • Have you tried Wolfenstein 3D for the 3DO yet? It seems like a decent port.

  • @LoticaStudios I have, and it is indeed quite good. Probably the best I've seen on a console from back then.

  • sweet review! I take it The Coven is dirty

  • The song at the end and during the "coven scene" sounds so much like sofa rockers by Kruder and Dorfmeister. Just sayin'. Oh screw you!

  • I didn't now anything about the 3DO until now. Great review!

  • @phreakindee - I traded an Atari Jaguar I found at a thrift store for a Goldstar 3DO. Do you think it was worth it?

  • @Doommaster1994 I've never owned a Jaguar, but from what I've heard and my experiences with the 3DO, I'd say that's not a bad trade.

  • @Doommaster1994 OH YES

  • I have a boxed Fz-10. Terrible thing. Can't find any good games.

  • I had a 3DO as a child, I loved it so much. A lot of fond memories, glad to know someone else knows about it.

    Subscribed!

  • Nice imformitive review!:)

  • I didnt know jack about the 3D0. This was really well done and informative.

  • whats the coven and where can i get a review and are you a twin or was that your friend

  • The 3DO is a nice to have, but not a must have. The only game to shine for that system is Road and Tracks Need for speed. Yep it all started on the 3DO.

  • oh my god i remember hearing about the 3do as a kid but never seen anyone with one i honestly thought it was a myth for a while lol

  • If only the 3do would have come out with a more affordable price.. (like $200) alot of people were excited about the system, but just couldn't afford it... alot of publishers would have jumped aboard, and better games produced...It was certainly alot more powerful than the sega cd and turbo cd....(the ps1 didnt come out for a year or 2 after if i remember correctly)

  • Great review. No shouting, unnecessary swearing or lame joke attempts when you don't need them. Good short intro and just the facts. Good stuff, and I lol'd at the coven part, haha.

  • I really wanted to have a 3DO just because of Super Street Fighter 2X, but it was too expensive and I was too young to have such amount of money to buy it.....

  • It was 1993.. hdmi wasn't invented yet. I have the same 3DO as the guy who made the video and I bought it for the same reason because as a teen in the 90s I always wanted one but it was too expensive for my parents to buy for me.

  • What wired controllers and no HDMI what kind of hell is this! lol

  • 32k even less than my bios on me laptop

  • Another professional review of yours which is also entertaining.

  • You should've gotten the Wolfenstein 3D port on the 3DO.

  • Would the 3DO be a better choice then a Sega CD?

  • @ATARI800XLfan To me, yes it is. The Sega CD has some really cool stuff too, but I feel the 3DO's selection is superior. And they'll both end up costing about the same, what with the Sega CD's cost added to the cost of a Genesis to run it.

  • @phreakindee Thanks, how about a Sega 32X vs CD?

  • @phreakindee Thanks, ended up finding a Sega CD model 2 with Model 2 genesis for 30 dollars. Is defiantly the next one I want, for Gex and wing commander 3 along with others.

  • @phreakindee Not to mention the 3DO has the best version of Star Control II (provided you can find it)

  • @phreakindee which version do you think is the best. I can get one for 5 dollars more then the Goldstar version but with less games, plus no memory manager for the FZ-1.

  • @phreakindee cdi is the worst i've heard

  • @phreakindee The problem with the 3DO is that it has no good exclusives. The Sega CD at least has some that you can't find anywhere else.

  • @ATARI800XLfan no. sega cd has way more hidden gems that are also exclusives, try snatcher, lunar games, popful mail, shining force cd, sonic cd, third world war, monkey island, rise of the dragon, vay, space adventure, dark wizard, dune, silpheed and also the batman and spiderman games are very awesome. I LOVE the 3do but sega cd must be the most underrated system out there

  • @ATARI800XLfan hell yes

  • @ATARI800XLfan MUCH BETTER IF YOU HAD THE MONEY.

  • Seeing the intro, I got a question I'm dying to ask.

    Coke or Pepsi fan?

  • @739199 9 Pepsi on its own, especially from a fountain, is sublime and my first cola choice. But I much prefer Coke as a mixer :)

  • He discovers porn at 9:49 LOL

  • In 5:30 what was that song

  • LOVE IT I STILL HAVE MY ORIGINAL CONSOLE TO PALY SHTTT

  • i love the 3dfx computer case in the backround

  • @NullaVids

I agree that the Sega CD version's graphics look inferior to other ports, especially today.

I guess the ultimate solution is to track down a copy of the game that looks and plays great (i.e. the Windows 95 or Playstation 1 port), mute the (crappy) MIDI music, and just crank up a Soundgarden CD on a regular stereo while you're playing the game.

  • @1ex1uger

I must say that aside from Soundgarden, Hammerbox's contributions to Road Rash ("Trip" and "Simple Passing") were stellar. It's a shame that their albums aren't anywhere as easy to track down as Soundgarden's...

  • Nice review, man. Subscribed.

  • The 3DO edition of Road Rash featured MIDI music? How lame! The Sega CD port features (great) redbook audio music by (great) bands like Soundgarden.

  • @1ex1uger 3DO and PC versions contained the Soundgarden music as well. But yeah, I think the in-race music on the 3DO port is some kind of MIDI music.

  • @phreakindee

Actually, my Windows 95 edition of Road Rash is similar to the 3DO port of Road Rash in the sense that you hear crappy MIDI tunes while racing. You DO hear awesome redbook audio music while interacting with the game's menu screens and buying new bikes, though. Having said that, I prefer the Sega CD port since it features zero MIDI music and all redbook audio.

  • @1ex1uger Nice to know, I wasn't aware that the SCD version featured full Redbook audio even during races. I'll have to track down a copy of that one!

  • @phreakindee Yea, the in game music is MIDI because the system couldn't handle CD audio with how large the levels are, too much RAM usage apparently.

  • I paid $400.00 for mine...

  • Love my 3DO

  • Lol, that version of doom looks sucky, suppose to be good on the jaguar but no music. i want a 3DO so I may get one.

  • It's like the 3DS

  • This is why I like your reviews - you're an underrated, informative and interesting reviewer. Keep these review up, mate! ;D

  • Star Control II. One of the Greatest games of all time is in its full glory on the 3DO!

  • Sorry, missed the Road Rash bit at the end of the vid!

  • I had a 3DO in the UK. It had a few great games! As well as the aforementioned Gex, and Need For Speed, it had the original (as in first) proper 3D version of FIFA International Soccer and a very good boxing game called 'Foes of Ali' and a great motorbike game called Road Rash. WIng Commander 3 was one of those games that you looked at and went "wow!" at - the fmv quality - for the time - was amazing, but the flying around itself wasn't that great.

  • Comment removed

  • A bunch of the games you pointed out that were good were originally on the Amiga, which I was surprised you even mentioned the Amiga CD32 at the beginning because NO BODY KNOWS ABOUT THE AWESOMENESS OF AMIGA! However, judging by the game footage you showed, they seem like VERY good ports. They even sound the same which is more than you can say about Amiga ports to Genesis (like Turrican).

  • great vid! subscribed :)

  • does it still cost 1000$ today? lol

i might geta new one, since mine got broken (fucking stupid cleaner!!! i told her not to clean the shelf -.-')

  • that "Gex" actually looks pretty cool :P

  • Holy shit, is that Boards of Canada I hear in the background... props man, completely forgot about the song Nlogax

  • I'd like to buy another one, but wow, they have really gone up in price over the past 2-3 years =(

  • This is another system that I won't bother collecting till I get magically rich.

It is INCREDIBLY hard to get your hands on a 3DO here in Australia (let alone the games), but it may just be worth the effort in order to play T.I.M on a console :D

  • 699 and in the 90's !!!!!

    WTF

even the PS3 wasn't that expensive at the start

  • I just bought a Goldstar for $5 and a brand new in the box FZ-JP1x for $10. So I spend a total of $15 for a working 3DO system. Not a bad deal eh? :)

  • @HerecomestheCalavera too bad the goldstar cant play burnt games that would have definilty been a good deal.

  • @EbayFigureReviews777 Mine plays burnt games just fine, I have several and they all work great

  • @HerecomestheCalavera really? my goldstar didnt play burnt games. interesting.

  • @EbayFigureReviews777 Do you have the Goldstar model which has the entire CD-ROM built into the tray? I think there was a second revision that just had a standard front loading try like a computer CD drive. I have the one with the whole assembly built into the tray, I thought that might be the reason yours doesn't play backups, but I'm not sure. When you burn them did you burn them at the slowest possible speed? I burn them at 4x

  • @HerecomestheCalavera Im not sure I follow. but it was the goldstar model that came with a kodak picture viewer cd and fifa game. and yeah i made alot of coasters at different speeds and diff burning software.

  • @EbayFigureReviews777 I'll try to explain better, when you eject the tray can you see the laser? Or is it just empty like a CD drive on a computer

  • @HerecomestheCalavera it was a couple years ago. but i think the laser came out with it.

  • @EbayFigureReviews777 Hmm, I'm not sure then. Perhaps the laser was just getting worn out.

  • @phreakindee Was Another world made by Lucas arts? It has that feel to it.

  • I had a GoldStar VCR! :D

  • i think the most underated console and badly programned games for was for the atari jaguar it could have done much more than was achieved

  • Hey, there's a game for this system and Playstation that was ported from DOS called Wing Commander 3;Heart of the Tiger. I wonder if that is something have played, or better yet, wanted to review;)

  • good review. I like your style. You are quite direct.

  • A game store near me have 4 3DO's in stock. I was gonna get one but i figured the games might cost a lot on ebay. Now that I know I can burn games, I'm going back to get it. Thx 3DO and Dreamcast for having the balls to say fuck copy protect.

  • Hell yeah! Po'ed! I had that for the ps1!

  • I beleive the name 3DO means Three Dimensional Objects

  • It's copy protection is great! SEGA also took advantage of this amazing copy-protection with the Dreamcast!

  • @ThePhoneUpdate The best copy protection is none at all :D

  • @phreakindee ye thats great imagine if the xbox 360 and the ps3 had no copy protection! one person would buy the game, spread it online and everyone else would get it!

  • @phreakindee indeed! i don't know why developers still spend money on copy protection...

    it'll be cracked anyway... :D

  • I smell a Ninny

  • @ExtremeBogom Welcome to YouTube, where every single person who opens their mouth is wrong, ignorant, and deluded.

  • @phreakindee Well said

  • @phreakindee Ahhhh you just made me remember Gex for the Playstation 1! Awesome fucking game and I am now going to watch a playthrough for nostalgia. :D Thank you!

  • nice futuristic

  • Somehow mine plays ps1 games...dont know what the difference is between a regular 3do but I managed to boot RE2 and duke nukem total meltdown and jet moto 3

  • 6:13 Was Clint in his underwear?! O_o

  • @fatjack421 Not sure how you saw underwear, but no. Besides, going commando is where it's at.

  • In it's original box:)

  • I have an FZ-10 :)

  • I wanted one of these so bad back in the day when they were $699 so I never got one. I was also a big fan of samurai showdown back in the day and also had heard that this is the only home version of samurai showdown that didn't suck.

I didn't know about the fact that the 3DO had no lockouts, pretty sweet considering now you could just make your own game library huge even if it was just a bunch of bad games you copied.

  • they added music to Another World??BLASPHEMY!

  • @Zontar82 Yeah, music during gameplay of Another World I do not agree with. Much better to just have the chilling ambiance.

  • @phreakindee I could see it either way.

  • one of the best dead on reviews of the 3do. I own one and love it. Still have an original copy of Star Control II, the default goto game. Thanks for the vid

  • AVGN reviewed Plumber Don't Wear Ties, that there is a classic example of a horrible 3DO game, I've never used or played with a 3DO, but I'm curious about it.

  • @Lachlant1984 The 3DO has the quality of having either bad bad bad games, or really good good good games and versions, it is either one or the other, you will never find something middle of the road in it, still it is a very interesting system and many first versions of games are for the 3DO so I think it is worth it.

  • i have a 3d0 =3

  • let's see how I do: 1-NES 2 -ps2 3-dreamcast 4-snes 5-genesis 6-xbox360 7-n64 8-variant of saturn controler? 9-master system 10-ps1 11-atari 2600 12-not sure, maybe aftermarket snes or a philips cdi varient or some other obscurity

  • @MMZen 8 is the first edition Saturn pad in America, 10 is a PC Gravis Gamepad Pro, 12 is the original PC Gravis Gamepad (which was also used on the CDi)

  • @phreakindee

I don't feel so bad on getting 10 and 12 wrong as those are really obscure but I'm slightly ashamed at number 8 (even though I thought it might have been the saturn) as I actually had a saturn, I remember mine not being so bulky though, maybe I had the second edition

  • I loved Road Rash on the 3DO, especially listening to Sound Garden while I played.

  • I'm surprised you didn't put Wolfenstein 3D in there. That was a pretty good port. Great review though.

  • @jowrab yeah i know... that's what i said :)

  • This was going to be EA's entry into the console market until Trip left the company.

  • I'm surprised you didn't mention the 3DO Blaster in this review.

  • @Dant2142 Yeah... this was back when YouTube still had their 10-minute limit on videos, so I had to do some cutting to make the review fit. I showed the Creative logo in the list of companies that made 3DO hardware, but I had to cut out the entire section where I went into detail about the Creative 3DO Blaster.

  • @phreakindee So, could you upload the uncut version of this video

  • @Dakkiller1 I don't have the cut footage anymore.

  • @phreakindee Are you going to plan on archiving all cut footage from now on

Its sad to see that your work is Partly Lost

Should this video be known as partially lost. I had seen some early YouTube videos that could be lost forever and even if do exist, exist only in a lower quality copy then the original upload.

  • @Dakkiller1 Oh it was archived. The problem is I had a serious PC death a couple weeks ago and I lost nearly all my LGR stuff. That's also why I haven't done a video in a couple weeks now.

  • @phreakindee so most of this only surrvives in compressed form which elemates any change of remastering these episodes in DVD quailty for any DVD release.

Next time, you should make multiple backups to these

    Archival Grade Mini DV tapes

    Backup hard drives

    Golden DVD's

Archival Grade VHS/ Hi-8 or any high quailty analog medium

  • @Dakkiller1 Ha, um... I think you're being a bit dramatic. There has never been any kind of plan for like... anything like that man. This isn't a classic movie or something spectacular like that. It's a simple hobby created with the most acceptable, cheapest and easiest hardware possible and it's called *lazy* for very good reasons.

I really don't find losing cut footage any more of a big deal than "losing" the hair when I shave. Life goes on, whoopty-doo.

  • @phreakindee LOL

So far, I only have backup HD for archiving

Starting with a cartoon pilot for my VIR Animation channel, I'll start spending cash on archival media.

  • Return fire i played that game on the ps1 When i was a littel kid! I mis that game alot D;

  • Shadow: war of sucksession LOL!

  • @boethet Hehe, glad you noticed that!

  • I see you have a nice collection, have fun! :D

  • freakin lmao 5:58

  • Another World is awesome!

And I didn't know SNK made a Samurai Showdown port on the 3DO. Didn't they have the Neo-Geo already?

    Nice review, by the way.

  • Do you have a Atari Jaguar? If you do can you do a review of that?

  • Good review!

  • ok the sega cd and the 3D0 have no lock out code or thing does that mean you can play 3DO games on a sega cd

  • @soisyourface1234 No, what I'm referring to is region lock and copy protection. You can, in theory, burn and play games from around the world without any kind of mod chip or special alterations, just a stock machine.

  • @phreakindee you can do that on the dreamcast too

  • @DaManIzBack not quite

    well, yeah you can

but I think that the post 2000s models had the bios rewritten, therefore, burnt copies wouldn't work

  • @Minority119 well i bought a dreamcast just last year and i just download and burn games straight off certain websites and stick them in my dreamcast and they work perfectly straight away.

  • Agreed. Love the Look! Why are those types of games not available on xbox and sony?

  • where do you download games for the 3DO?

  • @hopsonvideo Decidedly gray areas of the interwebz...

  • @jowrab No.

  • Thanks I'm found my favorite game when I'm was young

  • More Expensive then the average PS3.

    Its Everyone's Favorite Panasonic. 3D0!

  • I'm a proud owner of a FZ1 and my favorite game is Gex. The humor in Gex is very funny and the sound and gameplay are great.

    Great job on your review.

  • is... is that a gravis pc gamepad controller???

I'm right now erecting a statue in your honor, you glorious man

  • you did forget to show the coven for one of your favorite games

  • @StickPeopleAndPuff Haha, no, it's actually not a favorite by any means. The "game" is pretty terrible. It's just a prime example of some of the infamous smut available for the machine.

  • @phreakindee I have the P.C. version of GEX, and I have a few questions: Is it an obscure port? Is it rare? And have you ever seen the P.C. version of GEX? I have it, and it's the holy grail of my gaming career.

  • @phreakindee Do you got any Acessories for it?

  • @ProductionsHead For the 3DO, all I have are the two controllers. I've been wanting to get a mouse for it, but coming from Japan they can be tough to find and a bit costly to ship.

  • This is a very well done review.

  • 3DO?

Hmm, sounds just like PS3. The parallels are amazing. If it wasn't the shear might of Sony, and a monopolistic gaming /copyright industry, then PS3 could have gone the way of 3DO.

  • That version of "Road Rash" looks really nice!

  • ps1 good old times

  • Cool, By the way, very nice channel idea, and I love GEX!
