What kind of bait gear did you guys used? I'm new to lingcod so I'm not too sure what to buy. And how many feet of water should I be fishing in? Many thanks...
Too bad that when I was stationed at Ft Lewis I was so damned poor. I couldn't take advantage of the awesome fishing that Puget sound has to offer. :(
The fishing rules are lame this year! They lowered the size limit on lings, and shut down rock fish entirely. I feel ripped off. They charged 3 bucks more to fish less. I wish they came out with the rule book when it is time to re-up on the license, rather than a month after. The really sad thing is, these guys know nothing. I have had no trouble hookin' any rock fish, it's not hard to find them at all, so I don't know where they get the endangered BS.
awesome video! i grew up fishing the puget sound but mainly just approximately the tacoma area. i've been wanting to get out to edmonds because i hear you can catch decent lingcod off of the pier there.
@Twentyfitythrid I haven't read the rules for a while but the whole South Sound and even around the San Juans is closed for cod... or used to be. A good way to fish for them from the bank, is to gather eels or whatever when the tide is out, then use them for bait, fishing the incoming tide. I don't know if that's legal either though. You won't get but baby lings that way. You should have a boat, dangle a chrome bar, just a ways up from bottom. These are shakers... good meat but thin filet
Agreead, that was a copper rock. And btw, "bottomfish4life", look at your rule book b4 you make stoopid remarks. Min size in area 6, where these guys are, is min 26", max 40". you should know your rules b4 you go fish, or make false statements.
@physchohead24 There are lings around Dash Point Pier on the artificial reef. You can catch them from the shore, but count on getting hung up a lot on the reef.
Another good spot is under the Tacoma Narrows bridges, where old galloping gertie fell.
Quillback???Nope..but close. Both the Quillback and Copperback are in the scorpion fish family. A Quillback is much darker with a much bigger eye and no light-lad stripe, the front blotches are more cream to white. Copperbacks have a normal size eye and hence the name are copper in color with a cream to yellow lad line and same withfront blotches. Good to know your fish. Rock fish have a hunderd different familys with a hunderd different species in them.
you guys have a good show! why did you cut out half the video though? also, i catch the mutch smaller, but very fun sculpin. i fish the same way, but much smaller, and with worms
I am going this summer to Alaska ling cod fishing. Do you think a Okuma heavy weight rod with an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5500C3 reel spooled with 390 feet of P line 17 lb fluoro is good enough?
You can catch most lings with that rig. 17 pound line is a bit risky if you hook a big un. I've broken off lings with 20 and 30 pound line. I'd recommend 30 lb + spiderwire or other superbraid. Pretty reasonable on ebay. Under $15. Drew
Lings aren't really very selective jigs are very effective ... Hooking up a small flounder can is one of the best ways ... To catch flounder fish an area the has a sandy bottom, drop a rig down with a herring on it and let it sit
There are seabass in the Puget Sound!?!?
If you mean rockfish then all recreational fishing has closed for rockfish including those so called "quillbacks" , in the Puget Sound

does anyone kno where you could fish for lings without a boat? In the Southern Puget Sound?
