neanderthals are a separate human species that lived at the same time as modern man for a while, then became extinct. Modern man is classified as homo sapiens sapiens, and neanderthal man is classified as homo sapiens neanderthalensis. Just a different branch, both from a common ancestor. Like a cousin, not directly descended.

We evolved from fish ... yeah, numbnuts, that's why an awful lot of animals, including us humans, develop gills early in the embryonic stage; those then disappear as they transform into other organs such as the lungs. Why would we develop them? Why do we have an obsolete appendix? Coccyx? Vestigial tail ring a bell!?
