  • Just got back from the Vet for this stuff. I completely freaked out because I thought my dog was having a seizure. She did this for about 45 seconds before "coming to" and went on with her business. After nearly $700 of tests, I'm almost positive it was the reverse sneezing that I saw. What an insane worry!

  • For those talking about the dog being skinny, she was only a puppy but now she has grown fully and is 6 1/2 years old! She is healthy, eats well and looks amazing! I may make a video and upload to YouTube one of these days..

  • that dog is sorta.... pretty skinny.

  • @MrFreshcola10 Wow, I know this post was a long time ago, but I still feel a need to answer it (because I'm a know-it-all, which I apologize for). I looked at your post, and then looked at this person's dog again, and it does look like he's in an unhealthy state, but a lot of dogs have a sort of skinnier appearance, and they're just fine. Also, when the boxer in this video breathes in, it accentuates his ribs, though it doesn't mean he's starving or anything like that. Sorry about ranting :(

  • @Gerkenflauger ooh. thanks for clarifying. ^.^

  • @Gerkenflauger I had to reply to this. I have a 4 year old german shephard huskey mix who had parvo when she was a puppy. She only weighs between 40-50 pounds. She was too skinny at one point, you could feel her ribs and spine. But she eats totally normal. I actually think she eats more then what most dogs do. She gets 3 full bowls of food a day, plus treats. She goes to the bathroom normally, nothing is wrong with her. Shes totally healthy and up to date vet checked. Some dogs are just skinny!

  • Yeah, and I'm sorry about ranting xp. But what you said is really interesting (though I'm truly sorry that your dog had to go through that), and I have seen dogs that I worried about because I thought they were much to skinny, but now I know ^^, and I can calm down when I see them :D. Thanks for the info ^^

  • @Gerkenflauger Hey I totally agree with you! I think the same thing when I see super skinny dogs, I always look at the owner funny. But now I do view it a little differently only because I know for myself. And yes, I do think you could calm down a bit when you see them! :)

  • @xxmegz Hahaha, yeah, I could XD. And I once saw a dog I thought was too skinny, but it turned out I was wrong, and he was perfectly fine XD. Sometimes some dogs, I guess, look deprived from food, just because of their body type, and I think people need to recognize that the dog is fine :D. Thanks for your help, by the way :D!

  • kennel cough?

  • he's sick

  • My dog has been doing this off and on ( like every 4 months or so) and yes scary as heck... and yes u think they're gonna die..what I do is pick her up and rub her throat and nose, trying to calm her.. she usually calms after 10 mins and yes my vet said it's a reverse sneeze..yet when it happens again, I freak.. they are our babies lol..

  • it is a reverse sneeze

  • Reverse Sneezing is a Seizure, and normally caused by processed dog food. Although my 2 year old does it as a chemical allergy, so I am careful with sprays, etc. Look up or do a search on processed dog food. Good Luck.

  • I had a dog that learned how to use it to his advantage. It terrifed me cause I thought he was choking on something and I would hold him and pet him. It would go on for far longer than it should have, somethimes 15/20 minutes. My other dog does it also, but it usually only last a couple of minutes with him. Regardless it's still scary.

  • yes that is a reverse sneeze.

  • I have a boxer that just started doing the same thing. Spent lots of money trying to figure it out. I was told it's reverse sneezing.

  • I saw this video and was so glad that this is all it is, my boy is doing the same thing and I thought he was dying or something. Had me scared to death!

  • with a Boxer get used to vet bills -- they are great dogs but not long lived and not often healthy.

  • @James92802 Really. Have you ever owned a boxer? Mine have all lived more than 10 years with very few health problems.

  • TOTALLY A REVERSE SNEEZE. USE A HARNESS

  • reverse sneezing because my boxer will do this same thing

  • It is pharyngeal gag reflex ---a kind of reverse sneezing. It sounds serious but it is not. It almost sounds like a goose honking. Massage the dog's throat. Or, place index finger over the dog's nostrils, forcing it to breathe through it's mouth. --works well with small dogs. Or try depressing the dog's tongue which opens up the mouth and aids in moving air through the nasal passages.

  • I beleive that it is asthma. Do a YouTube search on canine athsma. You will find a video with a vet describing it. I beleive that my mini dachshund has it and will be taking her into the vet. Poor thing, she had an attack last night.

P.S. A lot of people call it reverse sneezing.

  • I almost put my Apso in a shelter b/cause of this, I thought she was about to die! But I learned is RSS. which is comforting. Scary as hell!

  • RS is usually caused by nose mite. Get your dog treated

  • It happens to them offen.

  • Sounds like a pig snort :P But yeah...its normal boxer sneezing?

  • the same thing with my dog it got to the pont were she couldent move.. she did tat for 5 or 6 mins today its mad scarey

  • It saounds like KC.

  • It's a definate reverse sneeze lol, my dog just did i lmao i was scared for a minute, didn't hesitate to hit the tube up for some answers! :D

  • My boxer does this its a reverse sneeze

  • im sure you'v found your answer by now,,but it sounds like the onset of kennel cough ^^ they dont have to be in kennels though to get kennel cough,,and she beautifull i have three boxers of my own but jsut loss one due to congenitive heart failure TT

  • My pit bull puppy has been doing this.. But hers last alil bit longer... It is scary seeing as I paid 200 dollars for her, saved her from being under 15 lbs at 3 months, and now she has this aweful cough.. But I dont understand? Reverse sneezing and Kennel Cough sounds the same..And I dont want to bring hre to the vet if I dont have to =\...

  • ya, but i'd bring her just to be safe..

  • reverse sneeze my puggle does this all the time this is perfectly normal ! i think ???

  • My dog does this occasionally too. I thought he was choking or something.

  • It is reverse sneezing but because look at your dogs stomach if its like tucked in like that when he reverse sneezes then he has reverse sneezing

  • Nah he is sick

  • Reverse sneezing (pharyngeal gag reflex) is what you are seeing, as most others have already told you. It's usually harmless and rarely cases serious health concerns. I've been a veterinary nurse for 16 years and haven't seen it severe enough to cause health risks. It is believed to be aggravated by allergies, temp. changes, humidity, and anatomical defects.

  • Thank you. For those curious, the problem went away in a few days. It was scary though.

  • reverse sneezing cause but certain allergens. our boxers get it a lot. so don't be alarmed

  • my beagle does it too. my friends saw their maltese reverse sneezing for the first time and they got real worried.

  • my dog just started doing this...she is 9 yrs, so i thought that was weird for her to suddenly start reverse sneezing...although that is what the vet thinks it is. how old is your boxer?

  • my boxer just started doing this, did the vet say it was reverse sneezing?

  • no but after some research it IS RS. It will go away, mine did.

  • I'm sure you've been to the vet by now, and I hope everything's okay with your dog. I just wanted to let you know that I have an 8-year old mini dachshund, and he's done this all of his life. It freaks me out anyway, but 3 vets have told me that it's normal, and usually harmless. It's going to be worse for you to watch than it is for them to experience. That makes you a good pet owner. I still hate to see it.

  • i have a small dog that just started doing that last night. does yours ever gag like he is goin to throw up but dosent and then he is fine and acts normal

  • I think that's similar to what my dog was going through but she is not doing it anymore. There are a lot of articles on Reverse Sneezing so I suggest you Google it.

  • @nwtampaguy34 Mine does, and it's probably him just trying to clear his throat (I've heard from other's that reverse sneezing is something dogs do when they're trying to clear their throat). :D Hope it gets better ;D

  • my beagle used to do something similar, and it was a slight case of asthma. I hope everything works out ok.
