    I wonder why blando brome is used as the main cover crop.

  • Thanks for your question & interest!

    The reason we use Blando Brome is that it is a low growing, self reseeding annual so we have a grass that germinates with the fall rains and goes to seed in April or May. We like the fact that the growth is during a time period that does not compete with the vines for nutrients or water. The other great characteristic for Blando is that it is a low grower (about 18 inches high) which means that it does not cause issues with the vines for frost hazard.

  • Additionally we mix Blando with Zorro Fescue and clover and call this our low profile mow mix. We plant these together and have a nice blend of grasses and low self reseeding clovers. This mix will out compete the other local weeds, and is especially good for hill sides where we do not want to cultivate and risk erosion.
