I just stumbled across this video which I haven't seen since the 80's. The 80's for those who weren't there was a truly magical time especially for music!
Green is still the shiznit, folks, no need to go back 27 years. There's some video of him from last autumn performing in Australia doing The Sweetest Girl on YouTube; he barely looks a day over 35 - and can still hit the falsetto notes!
My era is definitely not the 80s, but damn, what I would give to have experienced that decade. This music seems so...fun! Whereas today's just doesn't have that "feel good" feeling. It's quite sad
@Randii87 I used to walk around in skinny stonewashed jeans with shorty boots, 800 bracelets, and 12 pounds of hair spray. It was the days when MTV played music!
Probably one of the very best bands in 80's, at least in terms of sound production. The MIDI programming is simply superb!! As well as the harmony arrangements, and tonality changes.
Oooooooh....my youth...were have you gone? This takes me way back before the extra 30 lbs, and girls and sunshine...and fun. Excuse me...I gotta build a time machine...I'll be right back. : )
Dancing in the 80s was so much more fun. No trying to mimic the artist, no mimicing the video, no acting like a stripper on the dance floor for attention, no degrading yourself just for the sake of people around you.
You know, I think I took the 80's for granted but I'm not sure I would want to relive them either. Wouldn't it be great if we could just cherry pick the best of every generation. Oh wait...there's YouTube!
The '80s is the golden age of music for me. Bursting with innovation, creativity, glamor, pop culture, technology (e.g synthesizers). New wave, the Renaissance of music. The age of MTV. Am glad that You-tube is here, it made me go back to an inspiring decade, the '80s. Thanks. Mabuhay (Long LiVe!)
Green Gartside had one of the most unique voices to ever grace the airwaves in the mid 80`s. The 80`s was a time like no other and I still feel privilidged to have been apart of it all. At the end of 1989 I could feel the change in the air and I knew the best decade in the history of the world had came to a end. I wish Doc Brown would show up in that delorean time machine and take me back there so I could live it all over again.
@obxgirl64 A Youtuber after my own heart! How very observant of you!!! Definetely cut from the same fabric as "Who's Johnny", another great feel good sparkler from the 80s!!! God bless you for noticing that!! I think it was stuck in my subconcious, but you just brought it out
@auntjojo802 I feel like I missed out on all the fun (i.e., the greed and decadence part of it) having been born in the 80s themselves. But I'm still inextricably linked to the music anyway...
@auntjojo802 Wow you really make laugh , because I think I would say the same, took the 80`s for granted, but you know something I don`t think we are the only ones.
@daypeshmodd lmaoo My mind goes to the worst places when I see a funny word. lol I knew Scritti means to write cuz I speak some Italian but for some reason cudn't place Politti. lmaoooo
@StangoDango You have a dirty mind, but you already knew that, right? You speak some Italian & thought Politti is a funny word! That means that any word in a language you don't understand sends you to the worst places.
I don't know Italian, and I figured the meaning way before I read it. Ok, I do speak 2 other latin languages but still! Politti is easy, you know. Politic?
You're hopeless, but ok cos you like Scritti. I must just remember to never tell you a word in French though, lol !
@sevewone Good for you!!! I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who goes bananas for this stuff!!! You will also like Giant Steps "Another Lover" and "Into You". And don't forget about Level 42's "Something about you"
I'm utterly transfixed by Green Gartside's hairdo, the video should have been four straight minutes of him running his hands through it. It's so...floofy.
Also, the bits with the models = every Japanese karaoke video ever made
So freakin' excited right now! The name Scritti Pollitti was in the back of my mind and I knew they did a song I liked, but I couldn't remember what it was. I was confusing it with Debarge's "you wear it well". So I searched and saw the name "perfect way" and started immediately singing it to myself. I also remember Mike Seaver on Growing Pains going to see the Scritti Polliti concert. I miss music like this, along with Giant Steps "Another Lover", Tracie Spencer "Symptoms of True Love"
Jeez - some 80's songs are fun, but this was a PERFECT example of 80's pop junk. The video is so stereotypical (8mm/color/sheepish blonde models/studio scenes/slow-mo). So glad this isn't made anymore.
@ critical lizzy, Try alternating your time signatures, I sense a least three or four from 6/4, to 7/8 to cut time. Haven't analyzed it in years. Several keys and time sigs.
@redhed6971 and @critical lizzy, its in 4/4, the snare anchors it more so than the kick, it just has alot of dotted rhythms, making it sound irregular....if you want to hear some mad time signatures listen to the mars volta, cygnus, cotopaxi and many others.
I have always loved this song. But I can't capture it. I can't put into a 4/4 time signature box exactly. I can't put it into one key signature. It's elusive. I just know that when I hear it I feel expansive and good.
Holy shit! i heard a song on the radio the other day that reminded me of the beginning of this song. A song I haven't thought aboutin 20 years or so. Thanks wrong song!!!
Holy shit! i heard a song on the radio the other day that reminded me of the beginning of this song. A song I haven't thought aboutin 20 years or so. Thanks wrong song!!!
Ah, the magic of 1985. Some of the best music came out that year. "Voices Carry", "We don't need Another Hero," "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", etc. I'm still not picking up "Who's Johnny" from this though.
Easily one of the best yet oddly enough, least-known pop bops of the late great 80s.
By far my favorite one-hit wonder of the decade, too. And ohh, man, is that ever a statement, given all the great one-hit wonders of that genre.
I can be banging my head against the dash to Megadeth driving down the road, but as soon as this baby hits the air, I instantly turn into a 80s New Wave/ Pop fiend. IMPOSSIBLE not to tap your fingers, listening to this gem.
Green Gartside supposedly stands 6 feet 8 and for a guy that size he has an amazing vocal range. He pushes the high notes a lot, but he can also hit low notes with clarity. I hope he does a follow-up to "White Bread, Black Beer" eventually. One of the best artists of the 80s, IMO.
Forgot to add, I still have a music mag with Green Gartside on the cover and I keep it veeeeery preciously. I only have a few music magazines left though, and I could kick myself for that. I had hundreds of them, and someone (yeah, yeah, a cute guy) made fun at me for buying them. I had some more teenage ones & some very serious ones....regardless, stupid me threw most of them away!
One of my fave bands back then. I still have the albums, most of the 12'', and some of the real cool imported 45rpm's: they had great graphics, posters included, etc... (never gotten rid of a vinyl anyway).
Did someone say bring back the 80s? Give me a thumb up if you want to travel back in time with me!!!!!
@upbea45t For what? Travel back to the 80s?The imported 7''? I'm not American, but all the great stuff I got was imported from England. Including the good & serious mags I mentionned before, they were awesome& often came with a 7''
As for the 7' u bought, they were made of cardboard with no whole in the middle (unlike our cheap paper sleeves), Perfect Way had a gatefold sleeve that included a big thick poster. 12'' Hypnotize had a bigger bettter one.
I was in 7th grade when this tune came out. At the end of the school year, one of my classmates wrote this in my annual: "Scritti Politti beat their meatti." My mother flipped out when she saw it.
i hear this song and it transports me back in time to october, 1985 around 5:00 a.m. when my radio alarm would go off and i would have to get up to go to high school (10th grade) at magnolia academy in jackson, mississippi. song brings back some GREAT GREAT memories!
i remember in the 80's being in the mall on LSD listening to this... i thought wow, this f*n awesome song is god speaking directly to me. and yes. i was correct.
@manualLaborer Isn't LSD wonderful? I wish I still had access to this magical drug, and tons of free time to experience the magical experience made possible by this magical drug. Yes, I used the word magical several times. I must be insane. I must be sane. I must be...
where the F*ck is my hot tub time machine to 1983 or so?!!! it was so cool to hear this song in that movie. truly a great song worthy of lots of views!!! oh 80's please come back to me!!!
@RayNasty28 What do you have against this song so bad that you'd want Beiber to assassinate it? I'll admit that I hated this tune back when it first came out in 1985, but as one gets older, the music that grew up with grows on you.
@blueworld6 To any of my fellow Parkview '78 classmates from Springfield, MO - "he" looked a lot like our great, late friend Bill Brown, guitarist extraordinaire (who played for, among others, the Ozark Mountain Daredevils who I'm sure have YouTube videos). You left us too early, Bill. A bunch of us miss you and the incredible music you made with that stratocaster, sir.
@chillinjazZ ha ha yeah must say I felt less embarassed about liking this tune after Miles did his cover--kinda felt like I wasn't the only jazzer who cranked this tune in 85 :)
@Doobie1975 I agree. There was way too much "screaming guitar" later in the decade. It really dates music which otherwise would be tolerable to listen to now.
love this group.....remember when Mike Seaver always talked about them on Growing Pains...lol

@upbea45t Thx dude (if you're a dude)! You say you know where I'm coming from, so tell me your story if you don't mind.
Btw, I'm not a man. I'm a HUGE music lover (since I was 5, I guess), in the body of a small & slender female. lol

One of my fave bands back then. I still have the albums, most of the 12'', and some of the real cool imported 45rpm's: they had great graphics, posters included, etc... (never gotten rid of a vinyl anyway).
Did someone say bring back the 80s? Give me a thumb up if you want to travel back in time with me!!!!!
daypeshmodd 9 months ago 38
@daypeshmodd Oh yeah........
upbea45t 9 months ago
@upbea45t For what? Travel back to the 80s?The imported 7''? I'm not American, but all the great stuff I got was imported from England. Including the good & serious mags I mentionned before, they were awesome& often came with a 7''
As for the 7' u bought, they were made of cardboard with no whole in the middle (unlike our cheap paper sleeves), Perfect Way had a gatefold sleeve that included a big thick poster. 12'' Hypnotize had a bigger bettter one.
So glad I have it all still mint condition

I was in 7th grade when this tune came out. At the end of the school year, one of my classmates wrote this in my annual: "Scritti Politti beat their meatti." My mother flipped out when she saw it.

i remember in the 80's being in the mall on LSD listening to this... i thought wow, this f*n awesome song is god speaking directly to me. and yes. i was correct.
manualLaborer 9 months ago
@manualLaborer Isn't LSD wonderful? I wish I still had access to this magical drug, and tons of free time to experience the magical experience made possible by this magical drug. Yes, I used the word magical several times. I must be insane. I must be sane. I must be...

I wish Justin Bierber would remake this song...GO JB!
RayNasty28 9 months ago
@RayNasty28 What do you have against this song so bad that you'd want Beiber to assassinate it? I'll admit that I hated this tune back when it first came out in 1985, but as one gets older, the music that grew up with grows on you.

blueworld6 10 months ago
@blueworld6 To any of my fellow Parkview '78 classmates from Springfield, MO - "he" looked a lot like our great, late friend Bill Brown, guitarist extraordinaire (who played for, among others, the Ozark Mountain Daredevils who I'm sure have YouTube videos). You left us too early, Bill. A bunch of us miss you and the incredible music you made with that stratocaster, sir.

Miles Davis did a more dynamic instrumental cover of it. It sounds like a fusion skyscraper, ha-ha..)))

@chillinjazZ ha ha yeah must say I felt less embarassed about liking this tune after Miles did his cover--kinda felt like I wasn't the only jazzer who cranked this tune in 85 :)

440jasmine 9 months ago
@440jasmine While the late 80s had a lot of good music I thought the early/mid 80s was the better part of the 80s
Doobie1975 9 months ago
@Doobie1975 I agree. There was way too much "screaming guitar" later in the decade. It really dates music which otherwise would be tolerable to listen to now.

It really was a long journey for them. But the result is still amazing musical and literate, apart from the video (which is appalling rubbish).
