@betterquiet The D5000 doesn't have continuous AF, so when you are filming, you have to manually turn the focus ring to try and keep your subject in focus.

@PlayaSx1 well technically it can. I have this camera. If the lens is a AF-S by Nikon or a HSM Motor by Sigma then yes it can. This was filmed not using AF. I can notice because it'd be focused already if it was in AF mode.

@TheWoody2shoes if you want to take pictures i would definitely suggest getting a nikon. If you want to take video then I do not think it makes much difference which one you buy but the canon 60d takes very good video. If you just want to take videos though, i would recommend getting a video camera. the dlsr camera makes tiny clicky nioses when taking video because the shutter and the aperture are constantly adjusting to the given scenery.

@AesirSovann its actually PERFECT for beginners. however, the filming with the d5000 can be a challenge, and might not give you the greatest results. as far as still images, its what i use, and i LOVE it! the menu options are simple, the lenses are nice and cheap (55-200mm f4-5.6 is only 300), and its easily compatible. however, the film is NOT the best DSLR out there. when you want to make great quailty film, go with the canon 5d mark II. or the canon 7d. however, those are not beginer cameras!

@AesirSovann sorry for the late response. as to my knowledge. that camera (the sony) is a mirrorless camera that has interchangable lenses. that mesans its a step up from a "point and shoot" camera. now a point and shoot camera is generally what you will see any tourist with. walk around downtown chicago and your sure to find someone with a point and shoot. its basically a portable camera wiht little to no manual controls. this means, you can not adjust appeture and shutter speed.

@AesirSovann the nex5 is a step up from a point and shoot becuase it is a point and shoot camera with "interchangeble" lenses. this means you can add a wide angle or telephoto lensee. however, it is NOT a dslr. a dslr has a series of mirrors inside the camera that allow you to view your photos through a viewfinder that is not electronic. they are much heavier, and less portable. they also require learning. however, it is without doubt that they take much better pictures than a point and shoot.:)

@AesirSovann i am not sure if the nex5 has a system for taking HD quailtiy video. if you are a beginner, i would reccomend using the nex5 and saving up money for a d3100 or a d5000. i must also warn you, the d5000 is not called a "point and shoot" for a reason. its is much harder to learn how to take quailty phtoos. without setting things like apeture and shutter speed, the images coming out of a dslr can be just as bad as the with a cell phone camera!!! :)

@AesirSovann some of the problems with the d5000 are problems that are hard to work around unless your experienced.ive noticed when filming, its is often very hard to keep the video still without a steadycam rig. and those are very expensive, and not many are designed for the d5000. it also shoots in 720p HD, which isnt the BEST in the world, but it is perfect for begininers. i would recommend the D5000 for beginners. or the D3100, which i believe shoots in 1080p.

@helloimelliott You have to flick the switch on the lens to manual focus and then use the focus ring to adjust focus. No DSLRs so far apart from the Nikon D3100 and D7000 have full time autofocus. I prefer manual focus anyway.

@chillix0395 no. it has a maximum resolution of 1280x720. This is only 720p, which is not "full" HD. "Full" HD is 1920x1080. Nikon's new D3100 and D7000 feature both Full HD and full-time autofocus during movie mode.

Can someone answer a question for me? I bought the d5000 yesterday. i'm very happy with itm however when i film stuff sometimes here are horizontal lines scrolling u and down in the video clips. (not thin lines but more like when u film a tv screen and see the refresh lines scrolling)

it tends to be more apparent in brighter spots... any ideas anyone?
