The very best adlib of the entire song is at 5:40 by Daryl Hall, who sings so soulfully in FULL voice in a very high and difficult key! But this great bit was so sadly marred by the idiotic so-called soul screaming of Patii Labelle. Best example of how a white man can sing soul so much better than a black woman!
@Popstuff100 Agreed. Daryl Hall!?!? I mean, seriously. I have watched this clip a hundred times over the years, just for Patti LaBelle. The rest of it is pretty mediocre.... .and parts downright embarrassing. Patti, though... is supernaturally good.
I missed Billy Joel & Micheal Jackson so much o n this concert. it would have been even better (though that's hardly even possible) p.s. has anyone got a patti labelle removal tool i could use it right now
I believe it was a licencing issue. At the time of when this event was being put together there was issues around who would own the footage and the audio during the event. So this was a huge hindrance and explains why there was a number of huge artists not at this. This also explains why not a lot of footage doesn't exist of the event. There is a few hours from MTV when they used it to rebroadcast. Kind of sad really.
@bobwaits i think that Bob had to leave early because hes so famous that he would get chased down by fans after the concert so he had to hurry up and get out of there.
@MultiMjfan1 . There are a couple of resons why MJ and a few others' didn't play. He was approached by the American organizers but there was rumour that he didn't think Live Aid would work or wasn't interested, he wasn't the only one, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and others' seemed to follow his lead. Another problem was the promoter Bill Graham; "Angry, difficult, control freak". Alot of billed acts ended up not playing because of his obnoxious behaviour towards them. Hope this is sort of answers'
okay, i admit that patti's singing gets a bit annoying towards the end of the song... but she sounds absolutely amazing at the beginning!
and to be honest: there are obviously some singers on that stage who must be completely tone deaf, sometimes it sounds like some ppl sang it in a bar at 3 o'clock in the morning...
don't get me wrong, the whole spirit of the concert is great, and there are VERY talented singers involved (tina, lionel, dionne...) but they could have done it better, musically
What I would give for a megawatt shock to Patti Labelle. 6 performers to every other mic and shes got a death grip on hers with no means to share it! Her shrieks are a nail through the brain.
Could someone, PLEASE, for the love of all that's good, pull the plug on the mike carrying that SCREAMING banshee Patti LaBelle??? Talk about ruining the whole thing!! Mick Jagger & Tina Turner are standing in the back while this shrieking freak and Melissa "who cares" Etheridge are hogging the mikes up front! And Sheena Easton sings while Daryl Hall is in the background?? Didn't these guys watch the Wembley stadium concert? At least they tried to put the Band-Aid soloists up front
The sound check man was dead on to prove that this concert was almost complete bullshit and was completely appropriate to throw in that exasperating moan.
Oh Shennah Easton was the worst!! It´s that because shw is nothing in 2009 and Joan Baez and Chrissie Hynde are rock icons. And about Cyndi Lauper? What´s the reason she wasnt in this concert?
Obviously they had sound problems , which is strange considering how many hundreds of people were involved in this production. Kinda disappointing....
Lol. this was a total mess haha. But what do you expect when 100 singers try to sing a song with no reharsal and only a couple of the original singers of the song are there.
And lol at these people from other countrys saying "who's that black woman screaming" lol @ you fools. That MS DIVA PATTI LABELL, Get it right. SHe saved this disaster of a concert. Best female vocalist ever with whitney and mariah.
MICHAEL JACKSON did not participate in the chaotic LIVE AID concerts (for good reason).
He & Lionel Richie wrote ~WE ARE THE WORLD~ for USA FOR AFRICA (United States Artists for Africa), founded by HARRY BELAFONTE & KEN KRAGEN (LR's manager).
The official version of WATW was released as a single, an album & a video 7 MONTHS BEFORE before Bob Geldof's LIVE AID concerts in Philly (shown here) & the UK.
This drunken, drugged LIVE AID 'finale' quickly became a HUGE EMBARASSMENT to MANY.
@zimmiesgirl This song you speak of though, was inspired by the British charity single ;Do They Know It's Christmas', which was written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure and became the biggest selling single, well before 'We Are The World' which was an American response to the same famine. That's why the concerts were organised on both sides of the Atlantic by Geldof who was the mastermind for it all with Ure.
Patti labelle sings only by herself with her boring shrieks all time, she doesn't sing with other singers, this sounds very bad and ruins the song, she drowns the melody. You must sing all together, not to show how you are able, people want to hear the song, not the singer. I think Michael doesn' like it
Joan Baez wrote about that (very amusingly) in her memoire a few years later. Sheena Easton was suppsoed to sing one line solo, and then she, Baez and, Chrissie Hynde were supposed to sing "it's true we make a better day, just you and me" together, but once Sheenah had the mic she decided to play "diva".
ok, the second set of vocals by Patti were a little bit too much, the first time around were enough, she should of passed it up and it lasted much too long.
She wasn't pushed out, she did her. The whole performance was lame but personally I think her touch didn't fit the song at all, it didn't help. The whole ending event was a mess anyway. I don't think Patti always grandstands but this is one of 2 times I saw her do it, the second was her live performance with Michael McDonald
o per...lease....Patti is the greatest! She saw what a sham it was and made it better....she is props one of the if the the greatest female vocalists ever! and this proves it
around 1:25 in, what the hell is that giant moan? I've watched this clip literally over 30 times, and it never gets unfunny. Who is it?!?!?!?!????? hahahaha

While this would've been a great concert to attend, I think this final number could've definitely been improved.
To me, it looks like they all jumped on stage at the end and tried to pull something together to end on a good night.
Personally, I think the sound quality is bad and they didn't even use the original singers.
