As a youngster long ago I lived a sheltered life. When I was in the Army and heard this song the first time, I nearly had what we would have called a conniption fit. I thought it must be illegal to sing something like this. When I realized there weren't going to be any lightning bolts or MPs rounding us all up, I so totally got into this song! It was great. It was called freedom of speech. Real freedom of speech.
I love this song! If someone came up to me and said you have one chance to go back in time I would go to Woodstock. Music and culture today don't even compare to back then.
it was released that way on its first album release, but much to the displeasure of its creators, it was made to sum up the events of the times, but the album producers wanted to give it a catchier ring. we must keep it the way it was originally intended!
before woodstock the man viewed here as "country Joe" took the riff from an old folk ballad, one that also inspired Bob Dylan's subterranean homesick blues song. and made an anthem for the disgruntled soldiers in vietnam, he called it simply "the vietnam song" but in order to gain radio play and to perform in front of unticketed audiences. it couldnt have a direct agenda , at least at the time of its release
but if you research back to their first album (before they were signed to Vanguard Records) under their own self titled label, you will see its original name there.
and also I envy your timeline of being able to be around when all this was happening, I can only obsess in the present. but to have actually been alive when it was being created. astonishing. pleasure to converse with you
I loved the beginning part. This is my calling card against war. I even adapted the song by changing a few words to make it apply to the war in Libya. This video is best high quality video I've seen. Thanks for posting the remarkable classic song, that sticks in your song forever.

19yrs old kids. Drafted by the millions,
Many people were against the war while being forced to fight in it,
some were carried there in chains, when uncle Sam calls, you go, like it or not.
