They undoubtedly had the best driver (Brock), and they spent way more money than Ford on preparation, at the time of a world ban on motor sport involvement by General Motors. I remember reading Holden V8s also had dry-sump lube five years before Ford V8s, otherwise they wouldn't have lasted 1000km around Bathurst.

@JBofBrisbane Ford were heavily involved in the early 70s however that ended after Bill Bourke left. At one point, Holden wanted to sponsor Falcon driver, Murray Carter - to keep racing his Falcon due to a lack of them on field at some of the ATCC events.

I recall that Ford did not want the XD out on the racetrack - luckily a few privateers went behind their back and homologated it for competition...

A great evolution of the Torana there! There were a fair few intriguing models there, particularly the GTR and LH SL/R (the earlier HB "Brabham" Torana was a shocker though!)... - as for the lesser models, the 1600 had overhead cams 34 YEARS before Commodore!
