compression, if done right, shouldn't be heard (as it is done correctly here). it will level out the dynamics of a track. When signal breaks a threshold it activates a voltage control amplifier to actually lower the level of the signal that broke threshold by a set amount, and for a set amount of time, amongst other parameters. probably the most overlooked effect by most novice engineers. Any mic signal can be compressed.

Compression is a dynamic based effect. Can be used to level out signal to be a more consistent level so you dont hear the vocals drop in volume then all of a sudden get way too loud when he sings with more intensity. EQ is another dynamic based effect, but it controls the volume of individual frequency ranges, like the bass and treble control on a car stereo, only they are set ranges, not ranges that can be adjusted. delay is a time based effect, will sample the initial signal and repeat it.

and definitely not rich! that's my life savings there...and my credit card debt! lol
