it's commonly mistaken that russian and bulgarian languages are similar to each other because for most of the bulgarians born 25 or more years ago it was a necessity to speak russian.but i'm 16 and i sometimes watch russian movies with my parents - i'm telling you i do need subtitles or i would be guessing what the hell is happening now.so..they may have similarities but i wouldn't be so eager to declare them as "almost indentical"..

I am bulgarian and when I hear Russian I can understand a few words, sometimes a lot of words, but I almost never understand the meaning of the sentence. Both languages have a lot of common words but the overall structure is very different.

@TranceElevation actually they are not so different. Just in Russian there are too many foreign words, taken from french/german, also in Bulgarian there are too many words taken from English. Thats the reason u think they are different. If we speak about literature Russian/Bulgarian, not so different, specially when we talk about classic Bulgaria before 2nd world war. Before the comunists.

@TranceElevation really? I can speak Russian, and a lot of the words are very similar. Like saying good morning, good afternoon, yes, no, asking how somebody is, and counting to 10 are extremely similar.

@TranceElevation yes and no... im bulgarian, my second lnaguage is russian, my third is english ....and so on... so... bulgarian and russian are so similar that if russian is speaking to a bulgarian, then the bulgarian will understand everything.... but russian is more complicated in terms of grammar rules, so when the bulgarian answers to the russian in bulgarian then the russian will have a really hard time to understand him! hahaha! thats just how it is!

@deeeEeEEEeEee33eem It realy does sound similar, but it just sounds like this, the both langoages are pretty different. The Serbian And Macedonian are a lot more similar to the Bulgarian. I know becouse I'm a Bulgarian. :D :)

@cve7it0 well..there was one point where the early Russians used Old Bulgarian aka "Church Slavonic" for the Russian Orthodox Church, and much later....the Bulgarians borrowed back from the Russians to rid off the turk ottoman influence. my source: some Russian and Bulgarian people

even Bulgarian and Russian names both end with "-ov/-ev" (-ova/eva for females).
