Such a shame what happened to Nauru. I hope one day the country can recover. If the project to restore the landscape can be completed somehow, then I imagine there could be good potential for tourism, and also for improving the diet by introducing small scale agriculture to provide a source of fresh produce, as well as providing some jobs and reducing living costs a little.
I lived in Nauru in 1977. Got attached to a local nauruan. We 're so closed we treated 1 another brothers. I left the island for home. I sent letters and he replied all. Then he stopped answering my letters. he became one of a beloved pastor so closed to LORD JESUS. I REALLY WONDER WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM. i asked anybody please tell me if you know him. All Nauruans must be. His name is "james japhet dedija" email me please at gilmarx@msn.com thank you!
Hi i went to school there around the 80's at kayser school ,are you familiar with init reastaurant by the airport? I had fond memories of that island but unfortunately no pictures. anyway just sharing my thoughts...
oh awesome memories. I went to NSS from 76-78 and from 75-76 at Aiwo primary. Good times, Outdoor cinema, saturday matinees, chinatown, startwinkles, 10cent bus rides around the island, school discos, bony m hahaha ahh yeah that was the life. Lived in Meneng, is that still around?
1972-1977 I was in Nauru. We had the best childhood, anabare bay, star twinkles, china town, Perries library, hospital hill, exploring the war bunkers, and the jungle, football on a saturday, boat Harbour, I remember Kathleen Hartman and Gaye Smith came to my 10th birthday MQ54 opposite government house. My brother Richard was best mates with Kun Menke. We all went to the catholic school. I hated leaving Nauru Island. I'm sad it is not the island I remember. All the best, Ronlynn Brennan. xxx
I am writing a book (in Chinese) on my childhood years in Nauru from 1964 to 1974. From the late 50s to early 80s there were thousands of Chinese labourers work in Nauru and my father worked as the Kitchen Chief for the Chinese community and also he owned Star Twinkles Restaurant. I have very fond memories of Nauru and I would appreciate if anyone has any pictures or stories to share.
@starstwinkles I loved on Nauru between 1968 and 1971. I remember when star twinkles had its sign painted. The restaurant was going to be called the Twinkles Star restaurant but because the sign writer read right to left is got called the Star Twinkles instead by mistake. The video reminds me of a lot of my childhood, I learned to fish from an outrigger and didnt know how to use a fishing rod when I was first given one back in Australia.
Thanks for posting this great video of Nauru. It really gives you the feeling of the place. I have fond memories of living on Nauru in 1976 when all was well & the people were rich. Our son was born in the NPC hospital. Even though things have changed a lot it is good to see the people are still smiling, particularly the children where the future lies.
Thx for the clip, I lived on the island between 77-79 and went to NSS and Aiwo primary. Things sure are different now. Back then there was too much money and no one knew what to buy...outdoor movies..Star twinkles...Civic movies on a Sat..oh not too mention Bony M. Wonder if they are still listening to them. Great Island, im sadden by whats happened, I hope they can bounce back!
The Naurans' own greed and stupidity ruined it. They were sitting on on the ultimate lottery ticket--the richest country in terms natural resources per capita in the world AND in a paradisical location--and they pissed it all away.
Such a small country and quit know in this big world , greetinf from Romania, Florian
