the scoldinng part at the end by mr knightley of emma is really masterful because you see knightley knows emma to be a far better person than how she behaved. He really knows her and cant stand to see her acting with such disregard for miss bates .... Only he can tell her when she is in the wrong and get her to see the folly of her ways . This is the moment you realize he is emmas match her equal.
Funny, it might be because I'm not English and totally bilingual, but in the beginning I adore Mr Elton dispite the fact that he was absolutely annoying, and now I adore Mr Churchill and don't see him as a bad guy... Well or I love bad guys, or I just don't get all the subtilities of the story for I am not bilingual :) ! Never mind, even if I see why Mr Churchill can be annoying, I don't see him like such, I just find him only ironic and I find amusing how scornful he can be !
i really enjoy BBC's adaptations of victorian litterature. Emma, little dorit, pride and prejudice, wives and daughters, north and south, etc. Such a good work... i hope they know it's appreciated. Thank you cat4fab for uploading.
how boring people! they're in such bad mood that they take everything in the wrong way, as an insult, oh ema Inconsiently in one moment she let go all the represion of hearing that woman during all her life...
I love knightly's "badly done emma" and jane's wisdom "only weak characters are determined to be unhappy forever"
I'm sorry Mr. Churchill saying as such was reprehensible; you don't say things like that; especailly that loudly!! When Emma says what she says to Miss Bates; still makes my jaw drop; needs to stop and think. I'm sorry I wonder how hard it was for Mr. Knightly to pull Mr. Churchill off of Emma lap and punch him!!
What a view!!!!! Here we go......Yeah!! I would give Mr. Knighly leave to kick Franks arse; after repeating it; and LOUDLY!!!!!! Emma; Emma; think before u speak honey!!! Thank you Mr, Weston!!! She just proved my point I was trying to make earlier; shes spoiled and Naive; only a child would say what shes thinking and NOT stop and actually think it through!! I'm DONE with MR. Churchill; hes a COMPLETE ASS; he doesn't even care. Poor Jane; Like Mr. Knightly I BLAME Mr. Churchill NOT Emma!!
I think JLM handled the "Badly done, Emma" scene much better than Jeremy Northam. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Northam but his scene was more condescending, almost like a father scolding his daughter. JLM approached it like he was her equal. Much more like a spat between husband and wife. "Badly done, indeed!"
@Katiekinsism I agree; hes upset cause; of the influence on Emma by Churchill. I felt someone that LOVES her deeply; was talking to her; and trying to make her see it; without telling her!!
mr. churchill: (very loudly) well, i am not ashamed to repeat myself. from the very first moment i saw ms. woodhouse in february, let everyone in boxhill hear me, (even louder) i found her irresistible!" ~ now cue mr. knightley's oh-god-shut-up-you-fucking-wanker-i'm-thisclose-to-kicking-your-arse face.
it's sweet how jealous mr. knightley is of emma and mr. churchill's relationship. emma and mr. churchill's flirting openly! they're both being so immature but i can't help it, i love them! they're so mischievous and i enjoy that!
4:46 Miss Bates' face when she hears the answer to the conundrum, as though she still thinks Emma the most wonderful person in the world, such a sweet lady!
When Mr. Knightley says "Is miss. Woodhouse sure she`d like to know what we`re all thinking of?" is sounded to me like he would be thinking " you really wouldn`t like know what i`m thinking about the way you`re behaving...including you`re too much close to mr. Churchill and flirting with him" The way they`re behaving would be obvious flirting in these days, what to say about that time, when everything was suppose to be subtle.
@Yelloats lol i can't stop laughing i so agree with you, mr. elton wishes he never marry his wife, he refused beautiful, sweet, and sensible harriet and setting his eyes on emma who is far beyond his level. he deserve his pathetic gossiping wife. i love mr. knightly he knows emma like a book and is not afraid to tell her she is wrong when she crosses the line. i know ms. bates is annoying but she doens't deserve that.
@LadeyYuna I don't know, I think that's the problem of being someone with a nature like she has, its been my own fault some times, you have such a desire to make things be bright and cheerful that sometimes you end up going to far and hurting someones feelings and you cant take it back, but you didn't mean it at all. You can tell by the look on her face when everyone else is unhappy that she is really unsure on the inside. Its all because everyone was so dang miserable she tried to make itbetter
I don't understand why Mr.Curchill leads on Emma & treat Jane (his love) so badly? I understand that they want to keep their feelings a secret but he doesn't have to be mean to Jane and Emma and make her believe that he loves her. Anyone else think this is strange or am I slow?
@AhlaWahde I kind of got from the whole "true nature of women" conversation over the picnic that Jane was despressed because it looked like Frank would never be free to marry her, and she thought that his fake attraction to Emma might be turning real. Frank then thinks maybe this is her "true" nature, now that he's seeing her at home, and he's starting to think he might have been hasty in judging Jane's character and begins regreting his proposal. That's what he was alluding to.
I feel so terrible for Miss Bates. Her life is so sad and Emma was horrible to her...People are always being mean behind her back, which is fine because she IS annoying, but her life is really depressing and she does deserve compassion and pity.
this is really emmas worst moment and i really hate her at this moment, even though i love her but she does make up for it in the end and she does mature very much after this but poor miss bates, mr knightly and of course jane...miss bates insulted, mr knightly seeing his love so ill behaved and jealous of frank and jane...this is also franks worst moment because of what he does to jane
Emma and Frank certainly seem to be flirting rather a lot - considering the fact that Emma thinks Harriet is in love with Frank, she's definitely acting rather shamelessly in front of her friend this way.
the sad thing is that it is probably only 80 degrees outside without any humidity. i know they are wearing a lot of layers, but still if this weather was in southern Texas i would be cold!!!
I didn't like Mrs Fairfax before, but that girl plays her so well, i feel sorry for her, Frank is such a Jack A**, and the way she worried when Emma insulted the old lady =( why do they have to take all the bs from the rich people? just to go to picnics with them?
On one hand, yes, Emma was totally in the wrong making a joke at Miss Bates' expense. But I'm really surprised that Miss Bates is tolerated so well at all, and that people aren't constantly trying to deliver more hints for her to stop talking. Her way of going on isn't just obnoxious - for the time period it's exceedingly bad manners as well. I'm not clear why they tolerate Miss Bates when they aren't even inviting tradespeople to their parties.
@Sarandib22 I agree. I find that there is some impropriety in her lengthy idle chatter. I don't think Emma is in the right, especially with the comment being given among friends, but I also don't think her comment was shockingly outrageous. More that it was giving a hint with a bit of a sting.
i know i was so in love with Jeremy Northam as Knightley...I also loved Johnny Miller as Edmund...but i think i'm falling in love with him as Mr. Knightley *_* hehehe...
I cringed too! How embarrassing Ahhh. I am wincing right now. I am disliking Frank very much now. He reminds me of Willoughby from sense and sensibility. He's so loud! Look at the poor people. Poor knightly poor jane poor Ms. Baytes
I love how they did these scene, I cringed the whole way through especially at "Badly done Emma" Ouch, I know she deserves it really but Wow, good job I feel bad myself!
I feel bad for Jane to have to deal with Frank for the rest of her life, now that would be torture, a complainy negative thing. No matter how much she loves him his personality will get annouying and old very fast, indeed.
Lessons I have learnt - never go to a picnic with people you don't particularly like &/ are not that compatible with your own temperament. It is suicidal.
i just want to hug jane and say "its ok hes just being a dick!" i mean hes flirting with emma, talking about foolish marriges while mrs.elton treats her like a dog!
Is it wrong that I want to punch Frank Churchill for everything that comes out of his mouth way more than I want to punch Emma for what she said to Miss Bates?
no! i want to punch frank to! i think emma's was more of an "i said that out loud didn't i?" moment, but still, it was harsh, miss.bates talks a lot but shes a sweet and lonely woman
I know Frank was being a bit of a jerk but I think he was just so upset with Jane over their argument and frustrated with his inability to do what he liked with his life. I think in some ways he resents his father for sending him away and into the servitude of his forebearing aunt. He's young and acting a bit tempestuous. Hopefully though he made it up to Jane when his aunt finally died.
Argh, I hate this part. I can't stand sitting around watching people flirt and I feel so bad for Miss Bates. I guess it needed to happen, though...it makes everything come to a head.
Emma deserves as scolding but at first I wasn't sure why he is so angry. I think this whole outing got to him and emotions came to a head. Watching Frank Churchhill and Emma flirting, not being able to tell her how he felt, disappointment in her behavior. Had he loved her any less he probably could control this reaction better.
I agree, it must have something to do with how he feels about her. On the other hand, Emma takes it really hard. She may not realize it, but Knightley's good opinion is important to her.
That's an excellent observation - Emma likes to argue with him and teases him for thinking she's silly, but in the end she really wants Knightley's approval. I think that's one of the things that makes her realize she loves him.
Mr. Knightley - jealous and frustrated, and probably can't help venting a bit at Emma given a reason/ excuse.
Mr. Churchill - *SPOILER ALERT* bitter over secret fight with Jane at Donwell.
Emma - completely oblivious! It's her first trip, she planned to have a great time, and everybody's being a poop. Plus she's scheming to get Harriet & Frank together, so she takes every one of his super-flirtatious comments to be related to Harriet.
I find that in this version it's much easier for me to understand everything that's going on. The dinamics of the relationships are far clearer to me.
Emma's father was certainly right about no one enjoying themselves at BoxHill. Really, you can FEEL the awkwardness rolling off the screen. It's embarassing to watch.
Obnoxious might be a wee harsh. I think that in the wake of awkwardness, Emma was simply desperate to have fun and force a jovial atmosphere. Unfortunately she was surrounded by miserable people. Including the tension between Frank and Jane that she was unaware of.
Spoiler alert!!! Frank's words about short aquaintance and his flirting with Emma are pure torture to Jane, as we realize in retrospect. What a low-life.... everyone wants to be out of his company!
@jagirl314 Emma goes from being an immature girl to a wiser woman from beginning to the end of the story. It's what they call in literature, "a dynamic character"! How boring it would be if main characters were perfect and never changed or never made mistakes. Kind of like life, I think....if we actually learn from our mistakes.
I agree...i really do love all of Austens characters static or dynamic... there is just something about emmas (and btw marianne dashwoods) personality that kind of gets on my nerves. I do love them both in the end though....and i think that is the point :)
@jagirl314 I have to agree. I think it's because they both start off so foolish. I love Emma at the end but at the beginning (and in this scene) it makes you realize her flaw as a character. I still adore her, but she and Marianne act like little young teen girl. And I mean in their 13-14 years. Plus I also think because they don't rationalize and act on impulse as well. Still like you said love them at the end. ^ ^
the scoldinng part at the end by mr knightley of emma is really masterful because you see knightley knows emma to be a far better person than how she behaved. He really knows her and cant stand to see her acting with such disregard for miss bates .... Only he can tell her when she is in the wrong and get her to see the folly of her ways . If it's so hot, why do the men go out wearing coats?

Wow, It was great how passionately Mr. Knightly corrected Emma, and all of what He said was true!!

What a miserable day it turned out for everyone....

Spoiler alert!!! Frank's words about short aquaintance and his flirting with Emma are pure torture to Jane, as we realize in retrospect. What a low-life.... everyone wants to be out of his company!

This is the only scene in this adaptation that I´m not so sure about. Is Mr. Knightley a bit too angry talking to Emma?
KezWasHere 2 years ago 5
I guess it was because he wasn't just angry but also dissapointed in her. Maybe thart's why it just all kinda spilled out....

Apologies, I was trying to see more of your comment and gave you a thumbs down by accident. I'm sorry!

this is why it is so hard for me to like emma....she is so immature!
jagirl314 2 years ago 2
@jagirl314 Emma goes from being an immature girl to a wiser woman from beginning to the end of the story. It's what they call in literature, "a dynamic character"! How boring it would be if main characters were perfect and never changed or never made mistakes. Kind of like life, I think....if we actually learn from our mistakes.
DiscoLemonade11 2 years ago 10
I agree...i really do love all of Austens characters static or dynamic... there is just something about emmas (and btw marianne dashwoods) personality that kind of gets on my nerves. I do love them both in the end though....and i think that is the point :)
jagirl314 2 years ago 4
@jagirl314 I have to agree. I think it's because they both start off so foolish. I love Emma at the end but at the beginning (and in this scene) it makes you realize her flaw as a character. I still adore her, but she and Marianne act like little young teen girl. And I mean in their 13-14 years. Plus I also think because they don't rationalize and act on impulse as well. Still like you said love them at the end. ^ ^

I find the performance of the actress who plays miss Bates exquisite.

Oh, it's in there, just hard to tell with strictly dialogue.

Yeah, this whole thing with Frank and Emma is very strange. I don't remember that being in the book.

Boy, Emma and Frank seem to be acting quite inappropriately.
