You really can't compare this performance and Esparza's. This is seductive, laid back, and light-humored. Esparza's is a more ironic, depressed version, more fitting with the story of Company, while this was made for a revue. They are both fantastic in my opinion.
I noticed that this version is more laid back, melodious, and in a higher key. I really nice and different interpretation. I've been used to John in Dr. Who and that other show I can't remember the name of (the spin off from Dr. Who, LOL).
OMG! I just stumbled over this and WOW! I had no idea Cap'n Jack could sing. I loved John for Dr. Who and Torchwood. Now... OMG!! He sings! I love it!!
@Kiratoya - Absolutely agree, but he is just starting to age a bit in Torchwood:Miracle Day series 4 on Starz/BBC this summer. As like most really handsome/beautiful people who take care of themselves, he is aging quite well. This video was from a stint on Broadway in a Sondheim review called "Putting It Together" from 1998.
@suicidebomberbarbie Putting It Together is a Sondheim Musical Medly, it takes songs from his other works and puts them together in a new story, kind of like Kander&Ebb's The World Goes Round =)
I was about to comment saying he looks like he was sculpted by the gods and then I saw somebody beat me to it! Its the voice, the eyes, the perfect ass, and his entire presence. This is my favorite recording of this song.
I have been married for 33 years now!! I,m over ready!! but remember the first few years of a gay relationship I was ready then!! this song is perfect!! thank you john barrowman! I,m still married!! still!
@BabyBoyAK9 Raul sings it better and understands the lyrics better. People only like John Barrowman because he looks like a C-List Tom Cruise lookalike.
I saw Mr Barrowman in a revival of the show this was taken from. But unfortunately I didn't get the chance to see this revue. This is a great performance. I noticed even Ms Burnett was moved as he sang "keep me company". It is no wonder this would have brought down the house.
@heartears - This is from the recording of the Broadway production of a revue of Stephen Sondheim songs called "Putting It Together", about an older couple's relationship (Carol Burnett & George Hearn) and then a reflection of their younger couple selves (John Barrowman & Ruthie Henshall). The revue ran for about a year in the 1999-2000 Broadway season, and the recording was done at one of the later performances. There is a dvd called "Putting It Together" which can be bought online.
I hate to say that, but I think those 28 people are stuck in the middle of the last century regarding their opinions on sexual orientation... John openly admits that he is a gay... Although, we're living in the 21st century, some people still cannot accept the basic Rights and Freedoms... ... So sad
.... nevermind... John Barrowman is perfect and there's no doubt about that ^_^
Now, sadly, somebody who either has extremely clumsy fingers or is blind like you said has managed to press the dislike button.. :( John is a brilliant singer.
This is so beautiful--but my first hearing of it was a jazzy, soft unreleased Harry Nilsson rendition, and nothing could beat that. Has anyone heard it?
Okay...what's everybody's problem with the shirt??? I think it's HOT. Love the color, love that its appearance is of either silk or satin. I think ANY man is sexy in that kind of shirt, and deep red is my favorite color. What's the deal, people? I saw him in that shirt, and I just went, "GUH."
Ok I love John Barrowman but I dont think this song suits him very well. It seems like he's being a little too articulate and it seems more concert-ish rather than musical theatre. It doesn't seem like he's telling the story through the entire song.
I saw him live like eight years ago in Better With A Band in Philadelphia. I swear he was singing to me. The gays love me even in a crowd of people. :-) He's terribly talented and it was a great night.
I feel like his facial expressions take away from the song. The power of Marry Me a Little needs to be expressed by a passionate singing voice like Raul. However, Barrowman's more soft approach is decent.
I love JB a lot. I really do. But this is a really over-enunciated performance in many senses of the word. His pronunciation is quite strange in places and too crisp and totally gets in the way of the emotion.
Esparza is a great singer. It's only a question of taste. Somehow Barrowman strikes me as more real. He gives away emotions in his voice. I saw this years ago and only recently found out that he is gay. But that means absolutely nothing. He is definetely professional and great at what he does. Go John!
He is good looking, cute and this would have been great if I hadn't seen the sublime Raul Esparza sing it first. Frankly Raul is so strong in this song that I don't think there is anyone out there who can come close.
Having read your comment, I've just watched Raúl. He's good but I have to say that I find Barrowman superior in every way (voice, phrasing, acting, projection, involvement etc.). Still, each to their own and all that!

First of all, show some respect to Carol -- "horseteeth," as you call her. Because there's more talent in her fingernails than in that joke Barrowman.
His performance of this song is atrocious. His nasally, abrasive voice couldn't even make up for his completely emotionless and uninspired acting.
All I see from him is vanity and lazyness. And of COURSE, he has to end the song with one of his signature campy gestures! How about a self-hug to further demonstrate his self-indulgence? *rolls eyes*
