This is a GOOD solo by Pete Townsend??? Wow I'd hate to see what a bad one is. The solo is sloppy as hell and there's no sense of phrasing at all, he just does whatever and it sounds terrible. Townsend could never solo at all. And his dumb quotes about fast & accurate players are so dumb, Geeee I wonder why, maybe because he could never do any of the things that Gilmour & Page could for example. Townsend is like a bootleg Keith Richards.
@espdemon Doesn't matter that it's sloppy, Hendrix was sloppy. Clapton totally lacks the fire to let go and not care about making mistakes, he's too smooth to rock properly. Page on the other hand could rock his arse off and is technically better than Pete (he could also be sloppy though) but he could never ever write songs as good as Pete could. Led Zep were a band with some good riffs, some dodgy lyrics being wailed over the top (often stolen) which is cool, but I'll take great songwriting.
@frankie28web Townsend could never do half of the things Clapton has done on guitar, and Clapton isn't even all that as a guitar player. Townsend could never solo period, his solos are like that of a 5th grader, sloppy and amateurish. You're comparing Townsend to Clapton? Please. Townsend is basically a bootleg version of Keith Richards, even he admits it. He got his whole act from Keith.
@espdemon Clapton is technically much better than Pete - he put his efforts into playing blues licks rather than writing songs. But he can be boring, Pete is very exciting as Live At Leeds shows. he's also very off the wall in some aspects. He's NOTHING like Keith. People say it because he got his windmill from seeing Keith swing his arm before a gig, but playing style is totally different. He's much better than Keith, though keith has great riffs. Keith could never do what Pete does on stage
@espdemon are you fucking kidding me.....townshend a bad guitarrist? men do you see naked eye in the isle of wight, eminence in the live version, sparks????? townshend is a genius...clapton is better..yes...but pete is a incredible guitarrist too
Awesome. Pete's guitar playing improved tenfold between '82 and the band's revival in '99. Ever since John's death in 2002 created a sonic void, Pete's playing has stepped up even more to fill the space.
I saw them a few years ago, and when he busted out some ridiculous stuff like this it boggled my mind. Just goes to show that you do slow down just because its 40 years later.

Pete shows that you don't need to get a boring old fart like Clapton noodling blues licks when you grow old...
