  • I like this video and everything, but this woman has a personality comparable to a chalk board.

  • @imabuffylover98 I am one of the funniest people you'd ever meet in real life but in my instructional videos, I try and take things seriously. I need to be serious to keep from getting distracted. This is also one of my earlier videos and I hasn't loosened up yet. Hopefully, you still learned something. If not, I can take the video down:o( Have a great day! XO Carolyn

  • @SupTJay Your so mean!!

  • you sound like one of those automated people...

  • @georgebabesss Darn, my secrets out now! I am actually a robot...

  • hi my hair was dyed dark brown,i left it to grow out my natural color for a year, so the top of my head was light brown- my natural color, n the bottom was dark brown( the dyed part) i got a full head of blonde highlights at hairdressers, so the top of my hair is now really blonde and the bottom is light brown/ dark blonde. i am getting another full head of highlights done again in 8 weeks. will doing another full head of highlights make all my hair blonde? i want all of my hair blonde.. ?? x

  • @zoebrown15x No sweetheart. If you get more highlights, there will still be areas/sections of your hair that are brown. If you want all of your hair to be blonde, then I suggest you have your hair colored blonde instead and forgo the highlights. (but then you will have to have your roots colored every month, so that's something to think about cost wise.) XO Carolyn

  • I think your video is the simplest :) Thanks for uploading it but i have a question, i'm going to highlight my hair today or tomorrow like the way u did, but when u put the highlight in it doesnt get unto your other hairs? please answer soon :)

  • @lirpa0066 Sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner. If you choose similar colors, there will be some noticeable transfer but it should wash out in a week or so, depending on how much you wash your hair. Heavy contrasting colors should be pulled thru a cap... however, I have done both. I don't mind a bit of transfer cause I'm not a perfect person:o) And no one inspects my hair except me... Best of luck! Carolyn

  • Thanks for posting, I followed your instructions and got great results!!!

  • @rosachico Me too! I don't know why some people don't understand this! Kudos to you! XO Carolyn

  • DICKINSON!!!! SURE anyway thx for the vid

  • the highlights or when i dye the color it will show lighter on the highlighted area.Does that help?I also was wondering If i used the blue black Demi-permanent hair color and wait till the color washes out to start the lighting process again? When i highlight can I put a semi/demi-permanent hair color on top on the lighten hair. Will it make my hair brighter or will it look good.i was told i can bleach and put semi/demi over the bleach is that true? Thanks and happy thanksgiving.

  • @Nicolerulezlife Yes, to all of your questions. I am not sure what color's you'll be choosing however, so there's no way for me to know if it will look good sweetheart. That I can't tell ya! Best of luck! XO Carolyn

  • @notaditdot ty, I went the blue black demi color and the weird thing is my eye brow color and the color i put in are the same. Weird but hey I feel lucky for once my hair looks natural again(almost.lol) ty for the help and responding to my questions xhugx

  • @Nicolerulezlife Hugs right back at ya lady! Glad you are digging your locks! XO Carolyn

  • hi again :), I want to redye my hole head this time then just high lights b/c i love the color it came out when i bleached it(its came out a nice dark/with lighter blond highlights).I was wondering if i lighting my hair lighter can i put like a lighter color on my hair like a medium blond?I have it right now and love it but want to go lighter. Can i not use the foil b/c no matter how hard i try i dont get it but is it ok to leave it open or can i put it in a cap and let it sit?

  • @Nicolerulezlife I am not sure of the question sweetheart. Can you try again? (I've read your comment a couple of times and I still don't understand...) Sorry...

  • @notaditdot sry, my hair is like a reddish brown with lighter brown highlights(some came out blonder). My roots are in very noticeable.I would like to just bleach my hole head to get the color I from the highlights. But not sure how bc I try to use the foil technique and I for someone reason haven't figured out how to do it where they don't fall off.Can I just use a shower cap instead of the foil?If i redyed the same color as i did now (the reddish brown)DO I have to rehighlight

  • @Nicolerulezlife No, a shower cap won't work. They move around far too much. You need a color cap. You can buy them cheaply here in the US but I am not sure about elsewhere. I am not sure if you'll have to rehighlight. It depends on how dark the color is that you apply. Please look up my video about highlighting with bleach. It gives you a step by step process for highlighting your hair with a cap. (its a 3 part video) XO Carolyn

  • @pipitail Thanks so much for your confidence in me! I just love simple! XO Carolyn

  • Ur vids are so helpful..am all FAN of urs...The other day I chopped my hair off in layers(tying them up in a pony and then cutting them in layers, exactly the way u said) and they look wow...so the next weekend am gonna streak my hair...!!! I have a wheatish complexion and wanted to knw whether Cherry RED will suit me...or should I play safe with natural browns / honey, etc ???

  • @ritikamital Sorry I didn't see your message before this. I try to check them but sometimes don't get all of them. Cherry red is too bold a color to use this method, plus I think its a bit too bold for your complexion. You might do well with a golden brown, that will add hints of red and blond in your hair. If you want cherry red, better to pull your hair thru a cap. Hope this helps! XO Carolyn

  • hehe , 69 videos xD

  • i have been doing hair for 26 years and i would never do what you are doing to my or anyones hair. are you serious? please do not follow her directions unless you want to pay 20 times more money to get it fixed :) thank you.

  • @TheKak2009 Might not work for you, but it works great for me! Its called (among many other names) hair painting/free hand method. Its common practice in Europe but I guess they're too 'mod' for ya! I love it cause its so versatile. To each his own dear. I trust my subscribers to know whether or not this method is right for them. Its just another way to experiment with color. Have a great day!

  • looks great! i'll try it :D

  • Hey, thank you Carolyn for your tutorials....good info for all us do it your selfers!

  • @lettuceexplain I love to 'do it myself'. lol Thank you for watching my vids! XO Carolyn

  • Thank you for taking the time to do this video. I love the way that you 'chunked' the lowlights and did the highlights around your face. This will be my next "Do something for myself" project! Your e-book simplifies the entire process. Great work!!

  • @debnmike2 I love chunky and light additions in my hair too. Plus, it really gives you more control over which hair you choose to color.

Use colors that blend well with your own color and you'll be fine!

Thanks for buying my ebook. I plan to update it soon!

    XO Carolyn

  • lol wow this is really horrible nobody should follow this

  • @SupTJay Its called the free hand method and stylists use it all the time. I recently saw this done on TV. They praised its outcomes!

To each his/her own. I love it! So freeing! Have a great day!

  • i didnt notice a diffference. and nourish ure hair .its good to nourish

  • @buttaz3000 I do deep condition but I didn't before this video. I also saw a huge difference in the color. Sorry you couldn't see it:o)

  • An excellent over-the-counter hair color product (similar to Schwarzkopf) is DeveloPlus' Satin.

I've been using it for years and love the coverage.

  • Great to know! I will have to check it out;o) Thanks!!!

  • I always use deposit-only 10% developer for low-lights; it's much gentler on your hair and gives more shine. Brushing on the color from a bowl, like the pros, makes for easier application too.

  • I always used cream color and brushed it on for many years. I can't find the brand I used (Marjerel by Loreal) anymore, so I switched to liquid color. I understand about using 10 volume for deposit only, but I didn't want the chocolate or red colors I used, to be too dark, so I chose to use 20 volume. ;o)

  • my hair is mid/light brown by the way :) thank you hun, your vids are really awesome

    Angelie

  • Ha sweetie. Youtube didn't make me aware of your first question/comment, but I got your second comment:o)

I would use bleach & a cap. It'll be much quicker. Please view my video called 'highlighting with bleach'. (Its a 3 part video) It will give you everything you need to know to do this by yourself. (Its one of my semi newer videos...) You'll need to watch your hair carefully and be ready to take off the bleach when it reaches the color you want. You're so welcome sweetheart! XO Carolyn

  • hi Caroline, I am thinking of highlighting ( very subtle to start with) just the top and front of my hair( so it looks lightened in the sun naturally)

Are you using just peroxide bleach on your hair? as I remember salons usually bleach your hair with peroxide and then use a permanant blonde dye afterwards to dull the colour down. Am I right in saying this or is there a way I can highlight my hair ( not bright blonde, more golden blonde) in one step without it looking yellowy?

    ty :)

  • dont leave the bleach on that long and it will be more yellow, the longer its on the lighter the hair

  • I'm not using bleach. I am using color:o)

  • wow, good job, i love the way it looks!

  • I need to do it again. Its been too long! XO Carolyn

  • thats scarie i am a hair dresser.. i tryed this method long ago and my color leaked all over my other parts of my hair this does not work out ever u did it is lucky but i found away thats more easy i just but condioner on the parts i dont want color on and it works way better and its a safer if u dont have foil... but still o.o! but i like u hair

  • That's a great suggestion! I never thought to use conditioner to help the color not bleed. I will surely try it soon! I've been a hairdresser for over 18 years now, and so I may be a bit more skilled at doing this. Its great for only adding a few highlights or lowlights. If I wanted to do lots though, I'd use a cap for sure! XO Carolyn

  • Panda says "THANK YOU!! I've been wanting to highlight my hair again. Last time it didn't come out so great because I didnt know exactly how to do it. I used foil method, but it wasn't working for me. Thanks for posting this video up. I would think I'd have to spend alot at the salon, so the mighlights would come out nice, but your instruction shows that I can have a "salon at home" XD

  • Just be sure to choose colors that blend well with your own hair color. In other words, using this method is not appropriate for high contrast colors. You may get some bleeding but the color that bleeds will wash out in a few shampoos typically. I've been using this method for years but for high contrast colors, use a cap for best results:o)

  • Your hair looks really great in this video. I really like it. I do have a couple questions for you though.

    1. Is using a cap better than using tin foil? and

    2. I have dark hair that has a little bit of black dye left in it. I really wanna maybe put in blond streaks in it. Will I have to bleach it more than once? Thanks for your vids. :)

  • I like the results better from caps than foils cause its easier to get close to the scalp. I have a video about bleaching with a cap so watch all three parts of the video. It'll help you a lot. If you want to keep your highlights, yes you'll have to do them again once they start growing out. Start out with small amounts and add more as time goes by. If you pull hair out of the cap that's been previously bleached, just bleach the roots, not the ends that have already been bleached. XO Carolyn

  • I do my hair just like this! And get lots of compliments, it saves me 80 pounds from the hairdressers!! I find the cap is good to lighten your hair all over, but I like having more chunky colours so this is the best way. Thanks for the advice!! x

  • Thank God! I cringe everytime I get a message about this video cause I'm always afraid it'll be another hairdresser bashing me for doing it! I too, love chunky colors in my thick hair and it saves me a ton of time not to use a cap for them. I use a cap for bleaching my hair of course but for colors that blend with my natural color, this method works great! XO Carolyn

  • Thank you sooo much....Im a single mother of two, layed off my job ...cant afford to go to the salon now..kiddies come first :) ...u gave me a little hope that i could do it myself and still look pretty...times like this ...well its tough..thank you for helping those of us that used to tip well at a salon and have fallin on hard times. All these people w bad stuff to say r bitter hairdressers that only care about themselves.....but still doing their familys hair for free...lol

  • You know it lady! You are so right! I have a son and he comes first too. I have to think of ways that save me time and money cause I'm a single mom too. I am also a licensed hairdresser of 17 years so I know it works! I simply love using the free hand method because it's so 'freeing'. lol Take care and best wishes always! Carolyn

  • looks good dont listen to them haters. its your hair and thats how you like it. thanks for the vid :)

  • AMEN!

  • i reckon it looks good caroline..i dont think id do it myself but to each their own :) and to all the people saying mean things..just because she does her hair this way doesnt make it wrong and if someone else wants to try it and they stuff up there hair..then its there stupidity.

  • Well, all I can say is that I got a lot of compliments on my hair after I did this coloring. When times are tough and people can't afford to go to their hairdressers, this gives ladies options. I also show how to pull hair thru a cap in one of my videos, so it's really a choice. Either one give good results, unless you've got thin hair. This method was not designed for thin hair. XO Carolyn

  • yeah i gotta say it did look good..all the best to u and have a Merry Christmas and a great new year XO Sylvia

  • You too sweetheart! The holidays are coming up fast now! XO Carolyn

  • Use a flat iron please !! I am a color expert, you do not know anything about color. Never use 20 for deposit, 10 vol or 5 vol should be used or better yet demi or semi color is gentler and the results are shiny and reflect light unlike permanent color does when you are trying to deposit for lo lites. Also you should not be running 40 vol with lightener down the entire hair shaft on previously lightened hair it will hair breakage, on your hair it may be hard to tell because you have a lot of hair

  • Yeah, use a flat iron and damage my hair. Cool! I too, was a color expert for years, so don't preach to the choir. Did you ever consider that maybe I didn't want as deep a color as the darker color was, and thats why I didn't use a 10 or 5 volume peroxide? I am talking to the GP who doesn't understand about the difference in peroxide levels. The lighter hair strands had NOT already been lightened and so I used a 40 volume. Go back to the rock you crawled out from under, will ya?

  • OMG I am a hairdresser and her technique is not only far from professional but looks terrible and would cause color bleeding, hot spots and the overall condition of her hair is ATROCIOUS. PLEASE PLEASE for the love of God--DO NOT DO THIS TO YOURSELF!!! Love yourself enough to go to the salon and have a professional do an amazing color i n the first place so then you won't have to go there after trying this and getting a $400 color correction. And yes, you are an idiot!

  • People who are close minded don't do well in this life. There are many techniques you can use that do not require a professional. I've been licensed for almost 20 years now, and found that using the free hand method, is really freeing. I love it and think it works great for my hair. My hair is very healthy regardless of what you think. You do get some bleeding but its not much and its not noticeable on thick hair. Shame on you for talking down to people, but have a great day anyway! Carolyn

  • U r so right about it looking really bad.I use to do my highlights like this. They suck! I always get my friend that works at the mall at a salon ,to do mine now.I rather pay $75 for nice pro highlights, than pay no telling to correct this mess she's doing.

  • You people are blowing a gasket in my brain. I also have a video about how to pull your hair thru a cap. I trust my subscribers to know whether or not this technique is right for them. Where did I get the idea for using the free hand method? From Clairol! If was curious a while back to see how the highlighting in a box worked so I bought one. The tool they gave me and the instructions with the tool used this method.

  • Furthermore, I found the tool useless but instead used the color directly on my hair, just like they suggested to do with the tool. If you stick with colors that are close to your own colors, you will not make a mess. Get a grip and get a life and stop picking on people who trust other people to use their own minds!!! If you haven't ever had a bad salon experience with color, I don't suppose you can appreciate this method either. I guess all your salon experiences were great!

  • Furthermore! My hair didn't need FIXING. It looked great then and looks great now. I am so happy that you have an extra $75 you can use to go to a salon and have your hair done for you. In case you hadn't noticed, we are in the middle of a horrible economy and no one has any money to pay for services they might once have been able to afford.

  • come on who cares... people have the right to do what they like... i am a hair dresser but i will professional hair dresser would not act like u are jsghair thats just unprofessional your self notaditdot is at least acting professional and she not saying this is how u do it she just saying thats the best and cheapest way of doing it yesh its scarie and yesh sometime it bleeds but i mean really who cares

  • This would look like "chunking" on super fine hair...don't do it!

  • You are exactly correct. Super fine hair should be pulled through a cap. XO Carolyn

  • okay thank you soo much! you really helped and i hope you have a great day:)

  • OMG she has the same accent as mrs turnblad off hairspray !!!! this is turnin out to be a great day :D xx

  • lol Thats too funny! Hope all your days are great days!

  • I like your videos :)

  • Thanks! XO Carolyn

  • Oh okay I guess I didnt really give you enough details ( Sorry! ) I have medium to Golden brown hair and it is straight yet pretty wavy at the same time. So are there any styles or yeah colors i should make in it??

  • Golden brown hair is comprised of brown, red, and gold. Any of these colors would compliment your natural hair color and look awesome. You could add a few blonde streaks around your face to add shine and light. (See my video about highlighting with bleach) Styles? You can use virtual tools to find a style that's suitable for your face shape. (which I don't know) You can find all this info on my site which has a wealth of information on hair:o) Hope this helps. Carolyn

  • Wow this video is very helpful!!! Thanks for posting all these amazingly great vids:) btw i have a pretty dark brown hair color but im not sure what highlight or lowlights i should get. Now, i dont want to look like i got a present that i was waiting for for years to happen ( if you know what i mean. ) I like the way you done your hair but i dont think i should get MY hair like that cuz i dont think it would look good on my face. is there any tips or ideas you would like to share for me??

  • Are you asking me about colors I would recommend for you? Alot depends on what color your dark brown hair is. What I would recommend for someone with ash brown hair is a lot different than what I would recommend for someone with golden brown hair. Let me know so I can better advise you! XO Carolyn

  • thanks for the video

  • Thank you for appreciating my video! If you need any color advice, please let me know! XO Carolyn

  • You are ruining this business. What you are doing is very unprofessional and tacky!!! If people learn to do this at home what clients will I be left with? And what does a busy salon that you worked in have to do with using 10 volume??? That is crazy! Just to let you know high lights are not meant to be "stripy" like the way yours look. High lights are meant to look sun kissed and natural...not skunk stripes like you're teaching. Don't be a kitchen beautician go get a real day job!

  • Well, you have the right username! I'll give ya that much. I seem to remember that this was still a free country! Who are you to judge me? I can color my hair anyway I choose to. Go pick on someone else, will ya? Have a nice day! Carolyn

  • As a former hair dresser you should know the #1 rule is you don't do hair at home much less show the public how to do it!!!

  • Nice!

  • i think that she should get to the point more it isnt fun to watch

  • Nice layers indeed ;)

Though I would never do this - i'm afraid it might burn my hair :-s

    But nice work indeed ;)

  • yeah an those must be stylists that work a hairmasters.

  • OMG-this lady is coloring her hair in her bathroom, which I might add is dirty as is her bedroom where she first started this video. Are you people that desperate that you would actually pay for her advice. YOU DON'T USE 20 VOLUME ON LOWLIGHTS!! COLOR DOES NOT LIFT COLOR!! You will burn your hair off if you listen to this idiot!

  • You are not only rude, you are wrong. Hair does not burn using 20 volume peroxide nor with 40 volume peroxide if you use it correctly. No one's paying me for advice. I give it freely. You can't charge for advice on youtube. As to my bathroom being unclean or my room being unclean, I assure you that it is clean. I might have a lot of stuff but underneath my stuff, its clean! For Gods sake, I am a hairdresser not a cleaning lady! Get a friggin life!

  • Please don't listen to this lady. First of all Color does NOT lift color. Second: lowlights only need 5 volume -because your going darker there is NO need for lift. Your just burning your hair using 20 volume. You don't know what your doing, just pay the money and go to a professional.

  • FYI, color will lift color! I have very dark brown hair and my hair used to be blond! How did I do it? With color! Second of all, I have had over 17 years of licensure in Cosmetology. I can use 20 volume for my lowlights if I choose too. 20 volume CAN lift up to two levels when you use it, but its also OK to use to deposit color too, since its the lowest level peroxide they offer without having to mix it down. I was trying to simplify people's life, not make it more complicated.

  • 20 is not a lifting volume 20 is used in low lights and it also adds other tones of the color u added it tooo also color will not left color she puting color on it color still needs develpor.. u mean if u black headed brown wont left it or and other crap but thas not true in all cases and also 5 is hardly even around any more i never seen a 5 in any salon or beauty store.. and 30 and 40 is for lifting color off hair mabe u need to go back to school wkpftef

  • I LOVE Your Accent

  • thanksss:D

  • Your so welcome! Carolyn

  • looks really good :}

  • I love it too! XO Carolyn

  • where do you get the color?

  • Sally's Beauty Supply is where I get most all my color. I live in a rural area that doesn't have many choices:o) But any Beauty Supply has them! XO Carolyn

  • I did my hair like you posted and it turned out GREAT! Thanks

  • That's fantastic! XO Carolyn

  • you talk too much -_-;

  • The best way to get rid of petty annoyances on youtube, is to simply turn them off:o) I talk too much cause I'm a southerner and we are well known for talking. I won't apologize for that but I do respect your opinion. Carolyn

  • WHAT PRODUCT BRAND DO U SUGGEST

  • I have always used L'Oreal color. Sorry I didn't see your message sooner:o( XO Carolyn

  • Carolyn: Of course you talk a lot -- you're telling us how to highlight our hair! Duh. You can respect her opinion but I don't. She's just being negative. THANKS for a great video and for all the talking - it looks fabulous and I feel like I can do it myself :)

  • Most of the negative comments on this video come from hairdressers who wished I hadn't posted it. They can be as negative as they want to be. I don't care. It does not and will not affect me from posting them. I typically let them roll off me and refuse to say what I'm really thinking and be the better person:O) Blessings! Carolyn

  • mmm for highlighting hair we can only use the developer and the bleach only.

  • Yes, but you'll need a to pull your hair through a cap, and not use the free hand method. Foils don't work well either, unless you are only bleaching a few sections of hair. Bleach is very strong and has to be watched very carefully. It must be applied with precision and timing.

  • what is a RAT TOOTH COMB???? Don't you mean rat tail? and you don't use 20 volume developer to deposit a darker color and your hair color washes you out. Don't try to be a colorist because you're definitely NOT! be careful which clients you take because it's illegal to do hair at home and accept payment...don't get busted!!! hahahaha

  • Oh my gosh! Get a LIFE! She is just showing us her way of doing her hair not your way! why the hell do people have to be so damn rude? She was simply showing us how SHE does HER hair.

  • I love the way your highlights look. what are u using is it just regular hair dye or is it highlight dye. I wanna do highlights in my hair since my hair needs a root touch up. I was thinking about highlights. do u use a flat iron to straighting ur hair? u should try one it will make ur hair smoothy and silky. thanks.

  • I used regular color and mixed it myself. I use a flat iron sometimes, but usually just blow my hair dry straight. I don't like to overuse heat on my hair cause of damage and time constraints. Thanks! Carolyn

  • WELL I THINK IT LOOKS GREAT!....THE BLONDE DRAWS YOUTHNESS TO YOUR EYE BIGTIME!.....YOU SHOULD DO A LITTLE MORE OF THE BLONDE...I AM A HAIRSTYLIST AND YOUR HAIR LOOKS FULL AND HEALTHY TO ME...GREat job and thanks for sharing!!!

    From Hawaii...

  • Thank you sweetie. I really liked my hair too, but need to do more highlights thats true! Soon, very soon! XO Carolyn

  • your hair looks completely fried!!!!! oh my not trying to be rude but just helpin u out girl stop bleaching ur hair. i stopped highlighting my hair when it damaged my hair.

  • I bet your hair is a mess with demarcation lines and all different colors

  • I bet your hair is a mess of demarcation lines and is very brassy.

  • Nope, not at all! To each his/her own!

  • OMG!! thats how i do my hair too lol your hair color is really nice by the way

  • Yeah, it works great too doesn't it? I love NOT having to wear a cap or using foils. The caps cut your neck off and the foils are a pain in the butt. The freehand method gives you so much more freedom! I am overdue for another color. I am thinking about bleaching some highlights. (I'll have to use a cap for those though.) I bet your hair looks really great too! Thanks for letting others know you color your hair the same way and it works! XO Carolyn

  • Im a hairstylist, I am just speechless, and color will drip and bleed, I like the main concept but it needs to be polished, and you are creating partial low and highlights. I reccomend that you use foils and a brush not a bottle.

  • Sorry I left you speechless! Thats never a good sign. lol

I do the best I can for what I have to work with.

Using the freehand method, your hair color does bleed to some extent, but its really not that noticeable. The older I get, the less I care about perfection. I want results asap and this works good enough for me.I always used foils/caps and brushes when I worked at a salon. This is about coloring your hair at home. I did what I thought easiest for other people, not me.

  • I have also warned my ladies about using similar colors, (no high contrast colors), when they use the free hand method. It really does work OK. Don't knock it till you try it!

At least no one's ever come up to me and said "How awful your hair looks". Contrarily, its just the opposite.

Sorry if I offended you truly! Carolyn

  • 5 years ago a girl, who was 12, was babysitting her little brother, who was 5, cause her parents were out. she was putting her brother to bed wen she heard the fone ring. she piked it up and a mans voice said "turn around" she did then she saw her hanged brother, and then she died. copy and paste on 5 videos in 10 minutes or you'll die mysteriously tomorrow at 6:59.

Sorry i am not taking my chances

  • Your hair looks really pretty, i highlight my own hair to, i never understand why people pay so much for someone else to do it. Its really easy to do it at home. I used to pay £24 for highlights at a salon, now i only pay £3 for a highlighting kit. Your videos are great, keep making them!

  • =) I already knew how to highlight hair but was looking for ideas. I think your hair turned out pretty. Have a nice day.

  • Thank you! I am about due for some highlights since it's getting warm again. I love color! Hope you have a nice day too:o) XO Carolyn

  • How is her hair dead? It's thick, obviously, but not everybody has the thin, shiny hair you see on TV. My hair can be considerably thick when it grows out and looks much like that, but it's incredibly healthy.

This is how I usually dye my hair. The problem I had was I was always too close to the outside, so I had weird chunks showing sometimes. Oops. It's cheaper for me to hit Sally's than pay $60 to have somebody mess it up. :\ At least I get it how I want and save money.

  • You go girl! I feel the same way! Sometimes I mess up too, but oh well! No one has ever come up to me and told me my hair looked terrible. Quite the contrary indeed! I do not look for perfectionism. Its too tedious. I love my hair and love the use of lots of colors to accent my own color.

My hair is really thick too. I also have an uncontrollable curl pattern, even when I straighten it out. Its not frizzy, its just curly. Curly hair often reverts back to curling if its been straightened! XO!

  • wow its nice..

  • Thanks. I really liked it too!

  • DONT DO YOUR OWN HI-LIGHTS!!! SO NOT WORTH IT! thats not how its supose to be done.. first off you use foils and that so you dont touch any other hair second you dont hi-ligh, low-light to the root so it doesnt bleed and last her hair did not look that good, it looks dead and unatural.. sorry leave it to the pros..

  • You said: 'thats not how it's supposed to be done'? There are many ways to highlight hair! You'd know that if you were a pro! However, I have had 'pros' totally screw up my hair before I got my license of over 17 years! I like to use the free hand method cause it's easier and works. I ask people not to use high contrast colors because of transfer. As per my hair looking dead and unnatural? I have gorgeous hair babe! Sorry I didn't have time to deep condition it for you!

  • im sorry, im wrong. i take everything i said back even the things i said to her. i was being very rude. sorry.

  • Apology accepted!! Thank you!

  • ha hey its ur hair k fun

  • sallys is not professional hair store really for its open to the public , and for those professional who do leave spots well they need to take time and dont half ass your clients.

  • I think L'Oreal and other major name brand hair co.'s might disagree with you on that one! Wonder why the color bottles say: "For professional use only" and "Not for sale to the general public". I guess they are just kidding!

Leaving a few spots is no big deal dude. There is an easy fix for it. Every hairdresser has left them from time to time. My theory is not to sweat the small stuff! This is the last reply I'm leaving for you btw. I don't have time to rehash this over and over!

  • yes that can happen, but you should find a colorist who is very confident in color placement. also home hair color isn't the best for it contain metallic and sulfates that can cause your hair to be very porous .

  • That's why I push getting professional color from Sally's and why I only use professional colors! Getting your hair colored by a pro is always a good choice if you can afford it! (have you not noticed the economy?) If you can't, then a few minor bleeds or spots aren't that big a deal. No one's ever come up to me and said my color looked terrible! Even hairdressers leave spots and color transfer. I've seen it happen multiple times! No one technique is perfect or fail safe!

  • actually foils are more effective then surface coloring for when you use your hands it can cause uneven color and spots on the uncolored hair. and i wouldn't recommend using a cap for ur length of hair for it can cause bleeding.

  • Free style is always less desirable for really long hair or for high contrast colors. I've seen color bleeding and spots though, from doing foils and caps too. There are no guarantees. It can happen in a salon just as well as it could happen at home!

  • I am replying back to your message you asked me what color my hair is right now well the roots have grown a bit since april of last year so as far as my roots go their ash brown with like reddish natural high lights the color of the rest of my hair lol is base color mocha and the high lights are capachinno i don know how you spell the word sorry

  • Tell me again sweetie. Are you just wanting to redo your roots? I am a bit confused about what you're asking.

  • Thank you for the tips! I don't have any solution left cause i tossed it, but I will figure something out! Thank you again

  • After you mix colors, if you don't use them in a timely manner, they go bad. You'll need more color and it would really help if you could use a 40 volume peroxide. They lift much better than the 20 volumes that usually come in boxes. (if that's what you used) Good luck! Carolyn

  • Hi. Your video is good for people who know how to do hair at home. I tried this morning with the hightlights but they turned orange. Anything I can do TODAY to fix it? Is it okay to just dye my whole head instead to get rid of them? Thanks

  • I assume you used a blonde color and have brown hair? If your hair turned orange, you need to go over the color again with more blonde color. That should get most of the orange out. You should also leave the color in your hair as long as possible to give it every chance to lighten up.

If you want to know more about how to color your own hair, you should know the basics first. My inexpensive ebook teaches you what you need to know for hair color success. It all has to do with bases and levels.

  • Oh no... Ive colored my whole head dark brown ..so its a solid brown now. My natural color is dirty blonde/lt brown.

The dk brown seems a bit harsh for my skin tone.. so I would like either highlights around my face or maybe just lighten the whole thing a few shades if possible. The box color I used was a "warm" dk. brown with golden undertones, but on me it seems the undertones are more red and I dont like it.

  • Can you send me an email please, using youtube mail. This may get a little bit more involved than we can go into in the comment section:o)

  • Thank you SO much for replying back. My hair was getting extremely blonde from all the highlights and I cant afford to be a slave to roots so I just colored it myself. I like it ok.. but I do want it lighter. My hair is long.. so no cap for me. Im just scared of turning it orange by adding a light color on top of the dk. brown. Should I go to a Sallys and get a pro color ? Sounds like I should do a color rather than bleach. I was even thinking of doing a "carmel" color highlight. Hmmm.

  • You're welcome, but let me get this straight first. You only want to highlight root growth?

If you can color over the highlights you've already done one more time, the highlights will be lighter. Its tricky to do this though. (get it exact)

  • I there! Im looking for some advice. I dyed my hair a dark brown with golden undertones. I would like to add some sort of highlights for a contrast. Do I use bleach or color to achieve this tho? I read that you cant use "color" to lighten darker hair.

I was considering using the foiling technique and bleaching a few strands.. would this work you think?

    Thanks for any advice!

  • Foils with bleach work very well, but its tricky to do this by yourself. Once you apply bleach, it starts working immediately. The sections you apply the bleach to first, would process first. Waiting for the sections you did last to process, might damage the hair in the sections you did first.

I don't know who told you that you can't lighten dark hair with color? Sure you can! I do it all the time. You will need to use the lightest color blonde you can find with 40 volume peroxide.

  • For high contrast colors, you will need a color cap or foils. Using the free hand method is not recommended because of transfer. If your hair's not too long, I'd use a cap. Apply a shine product before hand for more 'slipability'. When you use blonde color on dark hair, you will get golden tones. If you want starker blonde colors, use bleach and a cap instead. That way you can apply bleach to all your pulled thru hair at pretty much the same time. You must time/watch your hair very carefully!

  • Yes...right now its light brown. I think i will visit the beauty supply next wk. this way i can measure SMALL quantities. (kwim) ;-)
