this guy seems to be making a redundant point; there is no point in refering to the first film so much, because the book ( Prince Caspian) doesnt contain the same whimsy as TLTW&TW. The film is somewhat bound by the narrative presented in the book.
he also seems to dismiss Ben Barnes' stunning performance just because he's attractive; I actually thought he did an amazing job, especially the accent.
The first reviews of his I saw were quite funny but overall gave me a very low opinion of his intelligence. With this review, I now have a slightly higher opinion of him.
this is one of the extremely rare cases when the film is better than the book it's based on. the allusions in thrfilm to 16century spain , macbeth, hamlet, and arthurian legend are certainly to the production's credit. the book had loopholes in it's logic and a much more depressing narrative. altogether the film is an improvement.
I don't know if I would go that far, but it's is true that Prince Caspian is the weakest book in the series (admittedly I haven't read the book in quite a while, though, so you might be right).
Kermode is new to me. I just starting downloading the podcast a couple of weeks ago. I live in the US. Nice to see him and have the visual. I find that, of the films I've seen where I've also heard he review, I agree with his take on them. He's funny, obviously loves films, respects the audience, and he is very knowledgeable.
DrCruel, if you've seen a dozen Kermode reviews and think he's always 'incorrect' then I guess it could just mean you see film differently; maybe time to move on to a different film critic, whatever tickles your fancy. Film criticism is mostly a subjective thing.
Also - I'd say he was quite European in his outlook.

I've seen perhaps a dozen of reviews from this man, and I must say he's been consistently wrong in every case. His analysis is utter rubbish, so I think he's not being deliberately idiotic - he seems to instead have the same sort of talent for being so terribly incorrect and ignorant whilst being morally pedantic that is so popular in academia these days.
I'm beginning to overcome my initial revulsion, and am starting to find him very humorous. Perhaps why the Brits tolerate him.
For everyone who is a Kermode fan and hasn't seen the vid on my page please click on my name and watch and enjoy!
This is from when he came to my uni and gave a "Kermodian" talk at its finest to a room of salivating film students, eager for no holds barred Kermode opinions on the good, the bad and the ugly of all things filmmaking.
Golden Compass is a textbook case in Hollywood greed and gutlessness.
If you're going to take an anthology like Dark Materials that has a clear atheistic theme geared towards a young and teen audience, and if you have an ounce of artistic integrity, you make that film or take another book. NOT just make a quick buck milking its fantasy context.
And actually it seems the low box office returns suggest that a bit of anger from religious groups is just the publicity that those producers needed.
I wonder what he thinks of Voyage of the Dawn Treader!

Please tell us some movies you love. I think he is funny, clever and in most cases spot-on. You seem a bit pretentious.

Can you imagine a film reviewer judging the success of a film on its' box office revenue?
More to the point, would you respect such a reviewer?
