This is at Central Park. I've got a still shot of it that has hung on my office wall everywhere I've worked since. On the back of the frame the photographer wrote June 12, 1982 - Central Park. Now it could be that they wore the same clothes to perform at Battery Park later.
Bruce had not been on the bill. When the NYT coverage the next day went with a headline about the size of the crowd, an acquaintance of mine said the correct headline was "Springsteen plays Central Park."

If you find a good way to safely put all that nuke waste I will advocate for nukes. $4 a gallon is still cheap compared to other countries. I think it should be $6. For me there is not such thing is winning a war. It is always a loss. USA doesn't care about other nations. It promised countries to help them out of a "communist hell" but left them all hanging.
It's all about the oil. What do you think got us into this mess in the Middle East? It's ironic that the US watches the Russian invasion of Georgia, the genocides in Darfur, the war in Somalia and on and on, and we sit back and wait to attack someone else we can bully. What about North Korea, Iran, Palestine etc? This war with Iraq is about oil. Rumsfeld and Cheney diverted our military resources to Iraq and today we are watching the insurgents gain strength in Afghanistan.
Beyond freeing supplies to capitalist investment, they blocked a hostile force in the Middle East. Should the US allow Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan to gain enough power and military capability to challenge American international hegemonic legitimacy then they could severely block oil supply. That being said, with one less hostile force in the oil rich Middle East, the US has benefited, oil-wise. first year political science, pick up a book.
Nice try, but I respecfully disagree with your premise that alleged American hegemony (I'm surprised you didn't use "imperialism") was the goal. Of all the countries the U.S. has fought in, liberated and defended in its history, we have NEVER permanently occupied a single one. You ascribe nefarious motives where none exist.
That said, removing madmen who could threaten the GLOBAL oil supply helps the civilized world, not just the U.S. In that sense, I suppose that would be a "benefit."
Having said that, America fought in Vietnam in the 60s & 70s, and they had no oil. It fought in Bosnia in the 90s, which had no oil. Ditto Grenada, Panama, Korea, and handfuls of others over the years.
Since the early 90s, American has imported ~2% of its oil annually from Iraq. For several years during the Clinton admin., we imported zero due to sanctions in place. We simply got a little more from other countries to compensate. We didn't go there to secure or steal their pittance of oil.
You're correct re the importance of Middle East oil, but not for the reasons you think.
America doesn't challenge the nutbags over there to secure or steal their oil -- we do it because they use oil to fund their terror and aggression. Hussein built his WMD with oil profits, and Iran is attempting the same. So yes, in that sense it's "about oil," but only because oil enables some evil people to fund evil deeds.
We get more oil from Canada from anywhere else but haven't attacked them.

Huh? The incident you're referring to was a secretive Syrian nuclear reactor, not an Iraqi one. It was being built with the illegal assistance of N. Korea (in direct violation of international laws against nuclear proliferation). The Israelis (or us?) detected it via satellite and then took it out. Thank God they had the spine to do so.
Addendum: I just realized you may have been referring to the Iraqi nuclear reactor at Osirak that the Israeli's bombed back in 1981. If so, you were correct about the incident (although that was a long time ago). Nevertheless, the Hussein regime produced a lot of WMD besides their failed attempt to create a nuclear bomb.
@macilak Why the hell "should" it be $6? You're saying it's cheap, COMPARED to other countries, other countries are just really expensive too, just more expensive, but a lot of that comes from extra taxes.

The No Nukes concerts helped kill our nuclear industry and thus give us our $4.00 gallon gas today. The disarmament movement advocated surrendering to the Soviets instead of winning the Cold War. The thought of leaving the captive nations to more decades of communist hell no doubt fail to raise so much as a yawn from Bruce Springsteen or Jackson Browne.

You are so correct. I hate both of these unpatriotic libtards. Why do people think that just because they can play guitar & sing, they are "wise" on politics??? Stupid sheep, thats how the commies like to keep them, stupid.
What? This is about disarmement. The US actually cut down on nuclear weapons development hoping that the russians would follow their lead - it obviously was't the case.
The anti-nuclear side of things made sense at the time, as there was a partial meltdown of a reactor in america. It's been found there hasn't been any health effects though.
The oil industry basically controls America. It's well known you can run cars off of other fuels, but the oil businesses want their business.
