This is a phenomenal version of this song. The only version better is "Stand In The Fire". The live version of this song recorded at The Roxie in Hollywood in 1980. Warren was the best. He also surrounded himself with the best musicians as well.
Warren had a couple verses written..he had been wanting to write with Bruce for awhile..he finally showed up at Bruce's house with this..only a couple verses done...He and Bruce wrote the rest of the song together and changed some of the lyrics that Warren already had...a GREAT song nonetheless
They did not write this song together and Warren did not have a couple of lyrics written. Janey needs a Shooter was first cut by Bruce in 1972, that is the origins of this song and it was a completely different sound. It never appeared on any album and Bruce gave the title to Warren, who proceeded to tweak the name and write all new lyrics. They did not collaborate, if you listen to Bruce's version from the Darkness outtakes, the chorus is similar but completely different lyrics
@mutineer350 The Beatles wrote music for the masses. Warren Zevon wrote music for the disaffected, the misunderstood, the confused, and the confusing.
my main passion in life is music,it has been for 26 years,my main man has always been bob dylan, nobody has ever come close to him, despite having over 1400 cds, then the incredible warren came into my life!!!! he's right alongside bob!!! he moves me hugely!!! and to think everybody hates kid rocks all summer long for ripping warren off,if it wasn't for that song i'd have never discovered wz!!!
he's amazing!!! so happy that i found him!!so sad that he's gone!!!!
intellectual + les paul + springsteen collabarated song + tight rock band = one of the best ever. i miss him even though i didn't buy any of his records after excitable boy. obviously my loss. thanks for this!!
@NevadaBoss Totally agree about Warren not being Hall of Fame - total BS. Is Jim Croce or John Denver in it? Also, Rick Springfield should be in as well.
He'll make it yet. No question. 'Lawyers, Guns & Money', 'Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner', 'Werewolves of London' - any one of these songs makes him a condender. Together, he's a lock.
Actually written by Zevon from knowledge of the title Janey Needs A Shooter. He learned of it and said, Id heard this song title from his manager and asked about it so many times, he finally said, You like it so much, why dont you write it? I did write a few lines, T-Bone Burnett added something. I cut a track and showed up at Bruces house in Asbury Park in the middle of the night. I played what I had for him. Its nice, he said, but where are all the other verses? I just smiled.
Lilnetty, the back-up band at the time was called Z Deluxe but they are really the band called Pecos out of Los Angeles. Warren found them at a club in Sierra Madre and liked what he saw. On their own, a really good band to see live. They still play around the Arcadia area. I know 'cause I was there when Warren first played with them at the club in Sierra Madre. GREAT SHOW!!!!! About 100 people there. That was all the place would hold!!! All great musicians on their own!
I know that its actualy an early MTV promo concert in New jersy in 1982. They are selling it on DVD on Amazon Im actualy in the proccess of buying it.
I so wish I couldve seen Zevon in concert but I was too young in his touring days and now its too late. My father wanted to bring me back in 87 but i was only 10 so I couldnt go.
that, is how it's done folks. thx so much for this post, r.i.p. Z, carmelita, hold me tighter...

may i humbly suggest that no zevon fan even think about visiting the rock and roll hall of shame (abba?? really??? ABBA???) until Mr Z is inducted.
If there's one thing that Jann 'Oink Oink' Wenner understands its mazuma. Let 'em know the REAL meaning of not so splendid isolation...

Warren was one of the most under appreciated musicans of all time. It is a absolute tragedy that he isn't in the rock and roll hall of fame.

This looks to be from the Roxy shows that yielded "Stand In The Fire." The band is a bunch of guys from Colorado who were a Zevon cover band.
Phil Brown

Saw him at the Paradise in Boston, in the winter 0f 83. He had two guitars named Curley and Curley Joe made in Hartford Conn.
In WW of London, he sang "Saw Larry Bird walking with the Queen, and man he was flying!" A fun performer and prolific artist.
